The University of Georgia School of Law released a video profiling Trevon Smith, the first recipient of the Stacey Godfrey Evans Scholarship. Smith is a second-year student at the School of Law.
The Stacey Godfrey Evans Scholarship was endowed by Representative Stacey Evans (D-Smyrna) earlier this year. Rep. Evans was a first-generation college student, and she is frank when describing her childhood: “We grew up – some people would say, ‘economically challenged,’ but that would be a generous statement for our family. We were just poor.”
For Smith, “Receiving this scholarship is something I’m very grateful for, and I hope that while I’m in school I’m able to live up to what she’s done and impart my legacy on UGA as well.”
Rep. Evans intends for her involvement with these recipients to transcend her financial contribution by giving them support with the “critical decisions” about law school that first-generation students don’t always have when deciding which classes to take or which professional opportunities they should pursue. She states in the video that this kind of support was, “something that I didn’t have, and I don’t want him to ever feel like he’s in this alone.” She continued, “I can’t wait to see what these recipients do.”
