Morning Reads for Tuesday, March 8, 2016
Good morning!
- Added at 8:08 AM – Remember the tiny WalMart that used to be over by Georgia Tech? It closed last summer – and this morning, Tech announced that Amazon Student will now occupy that space. This also marks the first Amazon pickup location in Georgia. Here’s to hoping that Amazon capitalizes on all those Tech smarties to get drone delivery going in Georgia (just not near the Capitol).
- Don’t hassle the Hoff, Tybee Island!
- There’s only one conclusion to draw from this kerfuffle: David Hasslehoff joined the Baywatch movie’s cast last week. The Germans love the Hoff. The Germans also love Syrian refugees. Thus, one can only conclude that Tybee Island is on its way to being a sanctuary city. Quick! Someone tell the Georgia Senate! (h/t Charlie)
- HB 370 passed the Senate yesterday, which is a win for local politicians across Georgia who were obliged to deal with the Ethics Commission’s hot mess of an online filing system between 2010 and 2014.
- Election conflict in Macon-Bibb: move local elections to November’s election day, when turnout is highest, or keep their elections in May?
- Per the Gallup well-being index, Columbus is miserable.
- The AJC opinion page offers differing takes on religious liberty.
- The Conyers police department received their City Council okay to purchase riot gear.
- What exactly is Google Fiber? Find out at the 17-minute mark of last Thursday’s A Closer Look.
- GenX and Hillary Clinton.
- Can the Electoral College save us from Trump?
- Nebraska tried to buy illegal drugs online to use for executions. The state’s drug deal went bad, and they want their money back. Alternate headline: “The Cornsilk Road.”
- Tomorrow’s total eclipse of the sun will end today, because time is a flat circle.
- When you’re shopping online, an item’s “list price” is basically meaningless.
- The Cosby Show is off the air. One show alum surmises why Woody Allen and Roman Polanski’s films are still celebrated.
- …which is a clumsy segue to This Week in Hamilton. It’s the Hamilton Mixtape!

Is the media waiting to break this story on Cruz if he becomes the GOP nomination? Cruz has also embraced his father a preacher who has made similar comments, “The pastor warns that there are five areas where the United States could change and “jeopardize our freedom,” including that “freedom of religion could become freedom of worship,” meaning that people would be punished for worshiping outside of churches.” Also Cruz has another major preacher supporters, who has called for the legal genocide of gay people. Cruz has not only not disavowed, he has defended them? How could Cruz get elected when this gets out?
…….Cruz defends evangelist who said God sent Hitler to hunt Jews
Campaign ‘welcomes support’ from faith leaders including Mike Bickle, who tries to convert Jews and predicts a new death camp era………

You went after Rubio, now Cruz, others are zombies, so why not just talk the good issues Trump has going ?
Salty,
I have not gone after anyone on a personal level, merely presenting the issues. As you know I have supported Kasich from the very beginning of this process. I have pointed out issues i have agreed with and disagreed with all the candidates. I made it clear multiple times that I agree with Cruz on eliminating payroll taxes and replacing it with a consumption tax. I pointed out the Rubio calling this a tax increases was an unfair attack. I gave Christie/Rand Paul a big thumps up many times for being the only candidate shooting straight on entitlements. No one on this blog has been a harsher on Hillary via issues, than me. I could go on on….I just call it, like I see them, through the years I have been attacked for not having blind loyalty on issues verse dealing with reality. BTW should not people understand the future attacks on Cruz?
Undermining is easy, the people need to understand the differentiations not the decisive.
Cruz has some good ideas, a true flat tax won’t happen, politicians, poor, rich, lobbyists and the left will kill it or make it look like Swiss cheese, but his opposition to the Mexican wall will. The wall is symbolism as once in we are a weak to lawless country. To make an immigration law work the cities and states must support it and assist.
I like you Andrew, but you need to take the Hillary blinders off…..
Mika and Scarborough,
By any measure they have been very non bias about Trump. They only pointed out early in the process to take Trump serious, while both openly supported other candidates. For almost every-time they had Trump call in promoting himself they let Lindsey his opponent rip him. The two establishment candidates Bush/Hillary avoided the show until they both started get challenged. They allowed all candidates to call in the show. The show has people from all sides commenting…..not getting your point?
Scarborough is a Kasich supporter, watch Tuesday morning.
Mika is a Hillary gal, watch any episode.
Trump takes advantage of free media because he is not scared of them. The rest apparently only want to appear occasionally because they are scared. It’s not about bias…it is about savvy media use by one candidate.
Agree 100 percent
So the politically correct and stupid are going after pricing of common consumer items but can’t get the truth in labeling sorted out. The end result is price fixing.
The big retailers can get around it by getting the mfg. to set a model number for them and a slight tweak in the spec. My favorite recently was a vacuum cleaner same name, different #, different cord length and a few other tweaks including mfg promo for this retailer. Price matching between retailers is by model number they can look up on line.
How about taking on property appraisers setting values for anything different that what we paid at our address.
I’ll bite: how does “politically correct” fit into how much different websites charge for a French skillet? Is it because a lot of Le Creuset is made from recycled railroad tracks?
The P.C. Is about freaking over price variations, if the mfg. permits it at retail stores. The end around is a different model number for Walmart if they specify Chinese railroad tracks and Target requires French railroad tracks.
See I’d posit that more as the free market, but ymmv.
Target does not carry Le Creuset. Wal-Mart does list Le Crueset online through a third party seller. It has the same model numbers as the official Le Creuset online retailer. Wal-Mart does not list any country of origin, and is priced 5 cents less then the official website. I personally would not buy the Wal-Mart model, not because it’s PC or because they might have Chinese railroad tracks. I would go through a known Le Creuset suppler because if I am forking over $320 for a 5 quart cast iron Dutch oven, I want to make sure Le Creuset is the actual manufacture.
And if you have to ask why anyone would spend $320 on a Le Creuset Dutch oven, the chances of you being able to ever borrow mine (it was my late grandmothers – she got it as a wedding gift from her rich Irish relatives exiled in France and is still used at least twice a month) are not measurable.
Teri drug Le creuset into a general conversation and did a right good job with you in obfuscating the issue. I was think of her comments while doing some manual chores outside and reflected on the many families I know that built dynasties from WW2 price fixing. All their kids and grandkids had the best cars in school.
The mega retailers would be two steps ahead, increased profits by leveraging suppliers and squeezing out the little guy with perks. Our legislators are not smart enough to take them or even improve competition because they live on lobbyists and deals.
I am not bewildered, rendered obscure, or unclear in my annoyance over the wrongness of Wal-Mart through a third party vender trying to sell recycled French railroad tracks that may or not may not be real recycled French railroad tracks. However; I think you are missing the point that in today’s internet snooping, I can look at the actual manufactures listed retail price. A sale implies the retailer is marking it down, but if your list price is higher then the manufactures price, how is this a sale? And if not, is it false advertising? And if you’re selling it for the same price as the manufacture, how is this price fixing, when Amazon has no connect to Le Creuset…?
Mittless puts out anti-Trump robocall in multiple states, still waiting for him to do the anti-Obama call. http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/mitt-romney-records-anti-trump-robocall-marco-rubio
Please keep it up Mitt! The more you oppose Trump, the more votes he gathers. Is Mitt secretly on the Trump payroll?
“The Hoff’ only has a bit roll. The stars are Zach Efron and ‘The Rock’. I’m more worried over a WWE invasion. Zach was here last winter to film Dirty Grandpa, so I’m use to the tween refugees assembling on the weekends.
I have some film crew members out of NC subletting the condo next to me for 6 weeks. They already hit the YMCA to pay for temporary passes, and had a car load of groceries from Publix. Their pay and lodging allowance might fall under the film tax credit, but all their personal spending over the next 6 weeks is an example of gaining local/state sale tax, and gas tax going to Georgia, and profits gained for local business.
The more I’m exposed to Dwayne Johnson, the more I’m smitten with his personality. He seems like he’s the kind of person who is inherently joyful, and we need more inherently joyful people in this world.
Alternatively, we could all just eat like The Rock. This prob only works if you also exercise like him, though.
“…personality…”
So that’s how you couch it when speaking to your hubby, I guess. 😉
Seeing pictures of Maria Sharapova in the news today reminds of how smitten I am with her…personality.
With regard to Sharapova, she admitted that she’s taken the now-banned substance for years, when it was legal. Now it’s been illegal for three months and she got dinged for it. Big deal…she used it for three months? Sounds like an honest mistake to me. Why the hell are sponsors abandoning her? I do not get that.
I was with you until i saw this: http://espn.go.com/tennis/story/_/id/14925933/manufacturer-says-4-6-weeks-normal-treatment-drug-maria-sharapova-case
Add in the fact that there was notification in Sept and December of last years and she STILL kept using it. That to me sounds like someone was trying to have an advantage. And its probably why her sponsors are dropping her. It’s not as simple as “I forgot, oops”.
I hear you, Lea. But it was still legal and was only banned in January. I got no problem if she popped it like Pez – when it was legal. She’ll get a minor fine for this. And other sponsors swarm back. The ones that dropped her jumped the gun.
Ahh, just face it Teri and admit you’d jump him! LOL! Like Calypso with Sharapova, I like Claire Forlani’s…ummm…personality!
Nope, DTRJ is not my type at all. I skew towards tall, dark-haired men whose traits include a strong vocabulary, and who look great in a suit. (This description includes both my husband and Colin Firth.) And while it is certainly your prerogative to guess who a woman you know only through the internet might want to “jump,” perhaps you are confusing the GeorgiaPol comment threads with another, less political website?
