Morning Reads for August 19, 2016
Ginny is out today, so y’all are stuck with me and my picks. It’s Friday, so try to escape the office a little early today if you can. Tell your management that I said it was okay.
Today in Georgia history, Ty Cobb gets his 3,000th hit.
Here:
- A handy guide on where to live in Atlanta if you want to be close to a brewery. This might be necessary in November.
- A Pooler, GA hotel is showing a bit of love towards their first responders with free waffles.
- Lookout Mountain, GA is looking at cutting taxes after higher assessment values give city government a windfall.
- That deal for Georgia State University to buy Turner Field gets questioned by Governor Nathan Deal’s office.
There:
- US Swimmer Ryan Lockte could be in some hot water if his tale of being robbed turns out to be a tall tale.
- Could the world be ending with Donald Trump “regretting” some of his previous statements?
- The US Air Force wants to supercharge radio communications.
- Scientists create a form of life that reads and interprets DNA in a whole new way. And this is how the zombie apocalypse will start…
Yonder:
- Gawker.com has said that they will shut down their 14 year-old site after its sister sites were purchased by Univision.
- T-Mobile continues to try and take on the big wireless carriers.
- Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are installing a parking space. I wonder how many quarters private rockets will have to bring with them.
Sine Weekend!

Ty Cobb, the pride and joy of the Bowman suburbs
I thought it was Royston. Or did they just decide to name the nearest hospital to Bowman after him. I always thought that was funny naming the hospital after him.
Just read a BizChron article that highlights how the Fintech industry is lobbying the General Assembly for tax incentives. (Global Payments, First Data, Worldpay) They’re pointing first and foremost to the film industry tax credits as a benchmark. This type of organized moved just highlights one of the negative externalities of neglecting the state coffers in the quest for “economic impact”.
As the adage goes, “if you give a mouse a cookie…..expect every other rodent in the city to show up asking for theirs too….”
Now that we know that Ryan Lockte, in typical UGA/suburban high school elite athletic fashion, blamed a colored for his wrongdoings, it will be interesting to see what level of wrist slapping and tut tutting he will get from students, peers and alumni (who are not Brazilian). Would he get the same treatment as a black athlete would have, in the same situation?
Whitewashing has its privileges? We shall see.
Smoking the reefer really early this morning aren’t we Rick. You realize Lockte didn’t go to UGA. He went to the University of Florida. So that explains why he is a piece of crap. If you are going to make crazy statements at least try to get a few of the facts right.
Gunnar Bentz is the UGA student involved. Lockte is 32 years old, although emotionally he’s really still 12.
Stereotyping Cult of Personality faux paus, aren’t we The Eiger? No, I didn’t realize that, all privileged white kids look alike to me. I don’t even watch TV, much less corporate enabled nationalism. So forgive me if I get the wrong team name. You see, I really don’t care about that stuff, until it includes white privilege.
And I care even less about school athletics. Some of us have grown up and moved on from rooting for an institution that was only a brief part of our existence.
Thanks!
So insightful. Thank you.
I was so not interested in this story until just now. Lochte is apologizing for “not being candid”??? Who told him to say THAT?
Ken Starr
SMH on this one. http://www.chattanoogan.com/2016/8/17/330137/James-Says-Walker-County-Legal-Bills.aspx
UGA can’t be happy, wonder how they are going to handle the mess with Gunnar Bentz ?
Unfortunately the situation is way beyond a legal one of drunk mischief.
bad link
Gotta love it! Judge says Hilly doesnt have to testify under oath. Why not? Whatcha got to hide? Is telling the truth so difficult? Can’t wait to see Trump run with this one!! lol! Too bad Safire is dead!
A dozen years ago Bush and Cheney’s meeting with the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, aka the 9/11 Commission, was not transcribed nor under oath. Lower the bar and live with the results.
Don’t ‘bleve they were a party in a lawsuit…
Perhaps because all the investigations, all the inquiries, all the witch hunts have produced exactly nothing?
Keep up with That Narrative, Cat! Your point is irrelevant. Is it too much to ask that she simply swear that she aint lying?? LMAO!!! Aren’t you proud of your standard bearer???
…as opposed to your narcissistic, lyin’ sociopathic Putin loving, racist, white nationalist supported, David Duke apologist all around mentally disturbed leader? There is something to really be proud of there Noway2016.
(Ya’ll are all slipping letting that comment go unanswered).
Actually I can’t speak for the aggregate “y’all” but as for myself I’m not going to expend the energy to argue which is the lesser evil. Or as I’ve said before which one has a future niche on the 8th vs. the 9th circle.
Scott, please switch to the sugar free Kool Aid, your blood sugar is spiking big time!
Sometimes the hyperbole is self-defeating and requires no assistance.
To be honest, I am tired of slamming Trump. Anyone still supporting him has one of a few things wrong with them. Either confirmed racists or confirmed GOP loyalists or confirmed delusional mentally off beings.
In any case, at this point, any public supporter no longer deals in reality. Pointing that out is increasingly tiresome.
As opposed to someone who supports Hill and her mountain of baggage? Got it! Lol!
The socialists and sociopaths don’t care much for this black sheriff.
