Georgia Millennials for Trump Chairman Weston Kirk has decided to drop his bid to become chairman of the Atlanta Young Republicans. Kirk announced his bid Sunday night on Facebook, and withdrew his bid early this morning in another Facebook message, portions of which are below:
After careful consideration and thought, I am sadly no longer seeking and I am officially withdrawing from the candidacy for president of the Atlanta Young Republicans. I’ve received numerous endorsements and words of support, for which I am eternally grateful. Your trust and support in me is much appreciated. My friends and family make my life exceedingly wonderful, and I couldn’t thank you enough for your love and friendship.
We’ve in some respect have lost touch with our purpose as an organization. Over internal divisions and a heated election, we have shrunken in our capacity to do great things. We should be a big tent with big ideas, rather than an echo chamber for stale political discourse. AYR is a very active club that takes a team to manage. I hope that in the coming year, that team will work more cohesively and grow in size. We need to hear the perspective of more members in our club’s leadership.
And with careful thought, I know that AYR should be in the hands of someone that deeply cares and is passionate of the organization, and that person is Angelyn Dionysatos.
I hope that over the next year, AYR’s newly elected board will Make Atlanta Great Again. Its people are its greatest strength, and its leadership must work collectively to advance the club’s goals: to assist Republican candidates with their election and encourage its members to help in local politics.
This past year has been exhausting. I have lost some dear friends this election, and I will work to mend those bridges rather than create even more divides. I look forward to seeing everyone this evening. I am thankful for your support. #MAGA
The 2016 presidential campaign cycle was nothing if not divisive, on both sides of the political aisle. Bernie Bros vs. Clinton loyalites. #MAGA vs #NeverTrump. With the election more than a week behind us, supporters of Hillary Clinton continue to stage protests in some cities over the results. Some Trump supporters have gone after Clinton supporters and NeverTrumpers, lording Trump’s victory over those who doubted he was capable of winning.
Weston asked that we remove a post from Monday night that was critical of his bid for AYR president, and we will honor that. He was one of the first people in Georgia to climb aboard the Trump train, and remained one of his fiercest evangelists on social media. That he decided to show some grace and step down from what would have been a contentious election should be noted and his request honored. His actions might well serve as a lesson to others who participate in this crazy world we have in politics.
