Sen. Perdue Supports Sen. Sessions for Attorney General
Today, President-Elect Donald Trump nominated Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to the position of Attorney General. Sessions has been a supporter of Trump from the start of his campaign, and has been credited by many as a major influence on Trump’s positions on immigration. While the reaction on social media to the nomination has been mixed, Georgia’s junior Senator David Perdue, who is a member of the Senate Juciciary Committee praised Sessions in a statement:
Jeff’s extensive legal career and experience make him a natural fit to lead our nation’s Justice Department. His knowledge and dedication to our judicial system have been evident during my work with him on the Senate Judiciary Committee. I look forward to continue working with Jeff to make our country safer for all Americans.
Perdue, of course, was also an early and energetic supporter of Trump’s candidacy.

What were the circumstances surrounding his denial back then?
Howard Kurtz on 38 year old Sessions in 1986:
“has called the NAACP and the ACLU “un-American” and “communist inspired” groups that “force civil rights down the throats of people.”
In another controversial remark, about KKK members, Sessions said “I used to think they’re okay,” until learning that some were “pot smokers,” according to the sworn statements by the civil rights attorneys, who had worked with Sessions.

That’s right… “Allegedly” Sessions’ problems with the KKK were that some were pot smokers. Not, you know, the lynching and the intimidation and cross burning and what not.
I think Sessions is a pretty terrible face for the Republican party to have as one of its top faces but my feelings got swept overboard this year.
In his “defense”, 1986 was a long time ago and Robert Byrd “evolved” or whatever and became one of the top Democrats in D.C. I’m sure Sessions will get asked about this and he’ll have an answer. Has he been asked about it already?
yeah, but talk is cheap. pre-canned answers may get him through confirmation, but if his heart hasn’t changed, it will eventually show.
and if it does prove that racist spots don’t change so easily, i would hope DJT is quick to fire him.
Why would he start firing them for showing their spots it he hires people whose spots we can already see?
To do what the voters refuse. Get them out of Congress.
Look, AG, SOS etc are positions that does not last long. Sessions is going to goof up and Trump will fire him. BOOM, he is in the public sector, no longer interfering with the inevitable progress of the 21st Century.
I am still hopeful Trump is really in this for the long con, and will finish the job of destroying the status quo wing of the GOP, through such appointments/firings.
Wouldn’t that be sweet? Matters not who the AL Guv appoints to replace Sessions, it won’t be that a-hole.
Byrd was also never seriously mentioned for any cabinet appointments in the ‘evolved’ phase of his life for a reason – like he would not make it through a senate hearing.
ACP:
It means that it’s ok to be a racist in the DJT administration. It’s really that simple.
Nothing’s that simple, except in the minds of simple people.
You forgot to mention is was a Republican controlled senate then also.

WASHINGTON — In 1981, a Justice Department prosecutor from Washington stopped by to see Jeff Sessions, the United States attorney in Mobile, Ala., at the time. The prosecutor, J. Gerald Hebert, said he had heard a shocking story: A federal judge had called a prominent white lawyer “a disgrace to his race” for representing black clients.
“Well,” Mr. Sessions replied, according to Mr. Hebert, “maybe he is.”
So, the guy who helped desegregate schools and prosecute a KKK individual is now a racist? Have any of you all ever made an off-color comment or joke? You folks need to dig up Leonard Nimoy and go In Search of Relevance! Too bad Teddy Kennedy ain’t alive to help with the smear job.
Backing up what Noway said…

Worth a read.
If Trump nominated Jesse Jackson for a post, he would be labeled a racist by dems. I’m not a big fan of Sessions, but it has more to do with his actual positions on important issues than yet another trip down racism lane with the media driving.
Let’s hope Trump knows what he is doing here…

I foresee a real dilemma looming for the Senator. A past history of lamenting the loss of “states’ rights” vs. his new role as the federal top cop who somehow remembers Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign as the good old days.
I’m with you on that Rick, biggest concern I have with this administration. But maybe it is time to have the battle, fed v states over marijuana laws assuming it will have to occur at some point. Banking laws are a top priority for legal states which must be addressed on a fed level along with just the basic legality issues. The time has come for congress to take up decriminalization if not legalization.
