We’ve already experienced a day and a half of severe thunderstorms throughout Georgia. More severe weather including tornadoes are expected today through early evening. At least 11 Georgians are reported dead in last night’s storms.
With daylight we’re getting the first look at damage of strong tornadoes that hit deep in South Georgia last night. Deaths are reported in Cook County in Adel, Nashville Georgia in Berrien County, and Barney in Brooks County. Additional damage was sustained in Albany which is still recovering from storms on the 2nd of this month. Other tornadoes were reported in Ashburn and Springdale, with more coming in. 11Alive estimates that 14 different tornado paths hit South Georgia overnight.
As we’re dealing with remote, largely rural areas, the full extent of the damage will take a while to be determined. Much of this area remains under a line of severe storms that will only grow stronger throughout the day. Those of us in more northern parts of the state should also be aware of a severe weather threat this evening – which seems to coincide with the Falcons game ending.
Keep South Georgia in your prayers today, and be prepared to ensure that they receive any assistance they many need. In the interim, remain alert to changing conditions and have a plan wherever you are today in the event the weather becomes severe in your location.
