Morning Reads for Wednesday, January 25th
Good morning. Here’s a song.
Georgia
- 15 dead in Albany, despite the courageous efforts of first responders
- One last piece of awful news
- Who am I kidding? In the meantime, drown your sorrows in the least depressing place on Earth- a casino! Georgia legal! Maybe. Probably.
- NFL jackwagons won’t let Mayor Reed show the Superb Owl in the Dome
- “No County for Vile Men” is pretty good
- Governor Deal visits Fort Gordon
- Legislative preview, courtesy of the ITP crowd
- “Applebee’s racial slur case” should probably be called “dude pulled a gun on a guy” case
Lesser Places
- Breathe.
- On the other hand, INVADE CHICAGO
- Wall, soundtrack already provided. I’d heartily recommend you buy the whole album, and make Charlie pay for it
- And the much-vaunted “Muslim ban,” which is actually increased restrictions on visa holders and halt on refugees from seven countries between Iran and Libya
- David Brooks has some thoughts, for whatever that’s worth
- Megan McArdle also has thoughts, and hers are less about confirming her priors
- And with all that, one last deep sigh, one I’ll be thinking about for years: The Cautionary Tale of Samantha Power
- And a shot of joy for the road: three puppies were rescued from rubble in Italy.
Keep your heads, everyone. Things can’t continue at this tone for long.

My head is OK but my gut is a little queasy and it’s only been five days.
More in 72 hours than previous occupant in 8 years.
That’s the kind of measured and reasoned reply I’ve been hearing a lot of.
Wait, I want to be open and collegial because we’re told we have to put on a happy face and work with the new regime, so strike that and let me ask, more what?
We need citations please (real ones preferred, but not required).
America first…No TPP, exec orders on wall, mid east refugees on hold, funding cut to sanctuary cities, conservative supreme nominee next week, dow 20k. And it’s just 1030 am. Who knows what comes after lunch
After lunch, we’ll more fun, ‘Alternative Facts’ to distract and distress you while we hope you ignore the dirty work going on behind the curtain. Please exit through the gift shop and enjoy our tariff free imported goods sale.
Dow decreased approximately 9.69% from 11/10/2008 to 01/23/2009 while it increased 6.51 between 11/10/2016 and 01/23/2017.
As to most other issues I will wait for details.
It shows markets reacted positively to Trump’s election and negatively to Obama’s election.
The issue here is the post election rally and its close to 7% under Trump. It may not last long but it’s impressive by any standard.
Not sure where you get “1.6% under Trump”.
It shows markets reacted positively to the election of Trump and negatively to the election of Obama.
As if the stock market reaction is something worthy.
Anyway, I think the expectation has been that Trump would be good for Big Business, so yeah, they will be salivating right about now. On the other hand, all this isolationist talk and action might put a bit of a damper on that. Maybe they (investors in Big Business) think they will be able to mitigate the damage that would do to profits. We shall see.
I am also concerned about his trade policies but I will wait for details before I criticize.
” As if the stock market reaction is something worthy”. If you got investments in the market you should be concerned about “market reaction”, particularly long term.
I feel like we found the trail, now let’s see.
But, the ugly wall, the cost to get to work for a lot of immigrants is going up.
Avoiding fixing and enforcing a sensible immigration plan has and will continue to cost us a piece of who we are, a nation of order and respect for our laws.
The Braves claim Cobb County taxpayers owe them another $14M for transportation infrastructure. (Using the word improvement would imply, well improvement.)
Tim Lee’s departing gift to 300,000 Cobb households is that they each write a $50 check to a billionaire for the pleasure of congestion.
In the words of Bloomberg, the Braves play taxpayers better than they play ball.
The AJC reported Trump is down to three candidates for nomination to the Supreme Court.
Should a nomination to an independent branch of government wait until it can be made by a President that won a plurality of votes?
Sure Dave just as soon as we have a new law requiring popular vote to be the deciding factor in presidential elections. Until then, it doesn’t matter.
Thankfully we had a law that said we had to wait until the next election to have a hearing for court nominations.
I read that in a Kellyanne press release, if you need a citation.

There’s a reason they call it the “Applebees Racal Slur” case. There are so many “dude pulled a gun on a guy” cases at the moment, you need other facts to clarify which one is which. Examples – have had “juveniles at Island’s Shell”, “drunk tourist on Bay” “couple robbed in City Market”, “Florida couple attacked in Forsyth”, “Iowa couple attacked at Forsyth”, “Two men held up in Forsyth”, “Students robbed at south end of Forsyth”, Savannah State students held at gunpoint”, “Elderly man attacked for $10”, “Elderly man beaten in parking lot”, “District resident killed walking with wife in his neighborhood”, “Gang tasks force revenge killing” (which makes it sound like the task force did the revenge killing instead of it being a federal RICO case) “gunfire outside Collins Quarters” and “Late night fight at Applebee’s”. Everyone one of these started as “dude pulled a gun on a guy.”
If there were more guns around this wouldn’t happen.
“Applebee’s racial slur” …..So when it happens on your sidewalk the headlines could be Ellynn’s racial slur ? I would object on your behalf and demand they make it Cheesehead’s………?
First of all, I have never issued a racial slur knowingly in my life. Second, I have been told by my brother I am the one and only person in America who should never be allowed to carry a firearm based on my ability to hit a boat directly behind me while aiming at a target 50 feet in front of me, (he’s confident the NRA will support this ban) so I don’t carry for the safety of all around me. Thus, the chances of my pulling out a gun in a heated argument while screaming a racial slur while extremely drunk (which would take a lot of really bad rum to make that even possible) are very very slim. Even so, the headline (if I was the defendant) would most likely read “Little Girl Case” with sub headline” Man injured – called grown woman ‘little girl’ one too many times. Defense claims incident justifiable”.
If I was the victim, “Eye Rolling Cheesehead case” with sub headline “Sarcasm going over assailant’s head results in frustrated encounter”
“Never issued a racial slur” – “over the head” sarcasm was, neither has Applebee’s…….
I did catch that… However; the legal name is Applebee’s. Thus Applebees or Applebee would still be incorrect.
Butch Trucks, Allman Brothers Band drummer and co-founder, has died.

Sad. We’ll miss him. One of the all-time great bands.
Trump said massive illegals voting. Press says investigate it. Trumps says ok. Pelosi complains about proposed inquiry. Why?
“Trump said massive illegals voting” Yuge, millions illegaly voted – sounds like grounds to nullify election. LOL
Got a link?
We like links here.
I don’t know but I can guess:
– I think elections are a state thing.
– First he says the election is rigged, then he says it’s legit, now he says it’s not. Are we going to have an investigation every time he feels slighted?
– If he’s got evidence to support his claim he should definitely turn it over to the appropriate authority. Otherwise, this is BS. Fake news you might say.
– If he wants to dump a bunch of money on the states so they can clean up their voter rolls then he don’ need no stinkin’ investigation to do that.
– One can easily speculate how this goes: The “illegals” are perceived to be in ‘blue’ states; blue states get investigated; blue states voter rolls get purged en masse. (False premise but so what.)
I’m not sure the federal executive branch can really compel the states on this issue. The Constitution gives this authority to the states and the Congress.
^^ Bazinga!
I know, right?
But it makes me think that we are going to need some way to distinguish between alternative facts and satire/sarcasm. We’re back to having to consider the messenger rather than the message.
it’s that last one benev, that got me worried when i read it, bc it’s plausible that any such investigation can be used improperly. federal election oversight is power over states’ administration of elections.
couldn’t find anything abt Pelosi complaining.
saw a piece where she said she felt sad for him bc of his obvious insecurity.
“A nation without borders is not a nation.” President Donald J Trump
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/border
I think your shooting for definition no. 4. Although I do like the explamble listed under no. 3.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/boundary
If you need additional clarification on what is a border and a bounty.
that line is simplistic pandering that gets ’em drinkin the kool aid.
a nation is defined foremost by its people. by its culture. so many other more important things.
political boundaries are a small piece, resulting from the intermittent historical conflict or agreement between neighboring peoples.
so DJT is just using the border as a political football, monopolizing on feelings of stress and conflict. What makes America great is not that we can build good fences, even if that’s what must be done.
as for nations without borders, there’s plenty of those, too, like “Iroquois Nation”, a phrasing used by our founding Colonialists to describe a people bound by identity but with unfixed political borders.
and what abt the Nation of Islam?
political kool aid.
