Sandy Springs City Councilman Gabriel Sterling has entered the race to become Fulton County Commission Chairman. The current Chairman, John Eaves, is running for Mayor of Atlanta. Sterling joins longtime Fulton/Atlanta politico Robb Pitts in the quest to replace Eaves.
Yep… I'm in the race for Fulton Commission Chairman. #gapol https://t.co/z847cf3BFn

Of note, this sets up a partisan contest for control of the Fulton County Commission.
Fulton is a diverse county of roughly one million residents. While often considered a Democratic stronghold, much of the growth of the county has been in Republican vote-rich north Fulton. Republicans held the county wide office as recently as 2006, when Karen Handel was Commission Chair.
Of further note, the dominoes don’t just stop in backfilling Sterling’s City Council seat. He had previously announced intentions to run for the state House seat being vacated by Judiciary Chairman Wendell Willard. With Sterling looking at a county wide race, there’s now room for more to pile in to the race to replace Willard in the State House.
