Morning Reads — Monday, May 1
Happy May, everyone! I hope you have a great week.
State
- Mapping Atlanta’s 10 tallest buildings.
- Side note: Few things irritates me more than national media writing stories on local elections.
- Casey Cagle is like Oprah, but with jobs.
- Repairing I-85 isn’t easy.
- If this were me, then I would still wake up early to write the Monday MRs.
National
- Uncle Joe says he’s not running for president…in New Hampshire.
- You can own a gold Darth Vader mask for only $1.4 million.
- The National Enquirer and Us Weekly just became sister companies. It matters.
- Should President Trump care about his 100 day approval ratings?
- Roads, but underground!

It’s not just May but May Day, the continuation of an ancient pagan holiday, the unofficial first day of summer.
May Day is also International Workers’ Day. If you feel uncomfortable standing with Socialists and Communists, remind yourself again of the problems many Americans have finding safe and decent jobs that will pay the bills and you’ll feel better.
Many other people are using the occasion to hit the streets to demonstrate for this or that cause. Good for them all and may they stay safe.
Our President has declared today to be Loyalty Day, calling upon us all “to recognize and reaffirm our allegiance to the principles” upon which America was built, including, presumably, the principle that criticizing politicians and policies when we find them offensive and wrong-headed is not just honorable and fun but a necessity of citizenship.
Another egotistic blowhard with bad hair will review the troops today in Pyongyang. May all his tanks and missiles be used for parades only.
Since it isn’t getting much play now, I guess I really should just let it be. Did yall see Jesse Watters and his microphone quote about Ivanka? Pretty disgusting, actually. Why is it guys on my side are stepping on it all of a sudden? Here is a semi talented and semi funny guy, who got an exclusive with Trump, saying crap like that about the first daughter. What was he thinking? And his excuse was also lame. Whatever your feelings about her, simple politeness puts comments like that out of bounds. What if comments like his were said to Obama’s daughters? He’s already be looking for work. Seriously. Imagine him at the unemployment office saying, “I’m Watters and this is my world…”
This might factor into the length of Watters problem, I mean ‘vacation’…

Hannity will not be pleased.
Just between us….ain’t gonna bother me if Watters never returns. If I were Trump and he made a crack like that about my daughter, at the very least, I’d never speak a word in his direction again. More than likely I’d send word to him that a public apology might be in order. Immediately.
That bridge article is pretty neat. It’s good to see that gov’t/business can get things done fast when the crap hits the fan. If there are any urban outdoorsman that want to go set fire to Mars Hill Rd. in Watkinsville, maybe that project can get done faster too.
This is a long read, but worth the effort. This is not a new issue, but it is one that needs to be addressed.

Thanks to Commissioner Hudgens, I am unable to some of the requirements of my job today. Why you might ask? Because all but a skeleton crew is working at the State Fire Marshall’s office today. Everyone else has a mandatory furlough day. SO – unless some one has an emergency – NO ONE is going to have any requests filed, plans logged, inspections scheduled, fees collected, no code questions answered, no plans reviewed and construction permits issued, no research on older existing structures – NOTHING. This department is already under staffed, and now this.
This is just silly….
This is a pet peeve of mine. Have you ever called someplace and they say something like “Oh the sales department is in a meeting”? Presumably to learn how to sell better? I can tell them how to sell better- leave some sales people available to sell some stuff!!
Or gone into a store and found no sales folks whatsoever. I was spoiled in Bogota. Sales people at EACH end of a given isle!
