On this date in 1996, an Atlanta-bound ValuJet DC-9 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Miami and crashed into the Everglades. All 110 people on board were killed.

    I remember the last huge swamp fire back in 2007, although I had to look up the name. The Georgia Bay Complex fire was four times bigger than West Mims and sent smoke as far north as Charlotte where residents called 911 in concern. Several days I could smell that fire in Norcross and north of there. It smelled like garbage burning. It burned for two months, was never controlled, and only ended when a tropical storm dumped several inches of rain on it. Otherwise it would probably have burned its way to the coast.

    West Mims is getting the opposite of storms. Temp will be mid-90s down there today with some wind, a very bad combo for controlling fire. The firefighters need rain and a lot of it.

    I call “bull” on the cop article.

    This hero worship has to stop. I witnessed 3 local Ellijay cops eating at our local Mexican restaurant. Some boomer rube came up and told them he was buying their dinner, keep up the good work, back slaps, etc. After the man left, the officers looked at each other, rolled their eyes, shook their heads, someone said something low and the others chuckled. I think I heard “what a sucker.” or some such disparagement.

    One cop’s foot was doing that strange thing people do with their feet only when on meth. That fast repetitive shake….

    54 cops were killed across the US in shootings (including suicides).

    Cops actually have one of the safest jobs, not one of the most dangerous.

    Hell, law enforcement isn’t even in the top 20 in dangerous jobs. You’re more likely to be killed/injured as a truck driver than a cop.

    When the Civil Right’s Act was signed, the white racists in power just didn’t accept the black folk and die off. They became mayors, sheriffs, cops, county commission, state representatives. And their jobs and their attitudes get handed down from one racist generation to the next.

    The only way to end systemic racism is to turn out every cop, prosecutor, judge (no matter the race), and start anew with young people, who have not been indoctrinated by military training to instinctively kill on sight.

    The last people that should be cops is juiced up ex-military.

    But we all know the white power structure will never allow this, and the people who worship cops will call for my head.

    Oh well!

      Rickday – Your opinion. My beliefs are based on 1st hand experience and not some dud correlating data; In 2003 a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy climbed into an overturned truck with an arcing power line across the truck to keep a trapped 13 year old kid from going into shock and dieing. The truck rested on the boys right arm with the arm almost ripped off. The deputy did not have to risk his life to save my Son – he could have waited until the power company cut the arcing cable. He put his life out there to keep a 13 year old kid from going into shock. So if I want to buy a cop or fireman or EMT and they wish to think of me as a chump that is ok…maybe one day I’ll hit the jack pot and find another one willing to save your kid. That is just one story of those folks going ‘beyond’…lots of others – so don’t embarrass your self.

        does not dismiss the reality of what I typed. There are bad actors out there, and they outweigh the few goods ones. The few ‘good ones’ are silent and go along. The cycle perpetuates.

        Racism and drug abuse is systemic within the Criminal Justice Community.

    This Comey thing is hysterical. I just heard a tape of a long list of Dems saying, not long ago, how Comey just “had to go” for various reasons. Oh, Lord is this just funny and sad.

      I was surprised that the AJC didn’t identify Jared Kushner, with no government experience, no policy experience, no diplomatic experience, and business experience limited to his family’s real estate development firm, as in the running for FBI Director.

      He’s only been tasked with negotiating peace in the Middle East, solving America’s opioid epidemic, diplomacy with Mexico and China, reforming care for veterans, reforming the criminal justice system, and reinventing the entire government and making it work like a business, so being FBI Director responsibilities would be a cakewalk for a can-do Trump family member.

        Technically “I cannot confirm that request was made… we don’t typically request resources for an individual case. I strongly believe the Russia investigation is adequately resourced.” is not everrrrr requested.

    The computer thing is going to be a real pain. Ol’ Noway is heading to Sri Lanka soon. So, i guess I can use the laptop on the way through Europe/Asia but not on the way back.
    Sigh…I just hope it isn’t stolen from hold luggage on the way back home.
