Morning Reads for Tuesday, May 16
If you live in Senate District 32, it’s Election Day! Again! Make sure to vote in the special election runoff.
- The big deal this morning.
- ETA at 8:20 – John Dingell said it best – “Oh hell what now“
- Paul Ryan stumped for Handel last night and nobody really wanted to talk about
Lord Voldemthe President. - The new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Atlanta is a former C-130 Herculese pilot.
- We need Finnish-style baby boxes in Georgia.
- While it’s necessary to ensure that babies have what they need to get a good start in life, let’s not forget that the United States has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. NPR and ProPublica produced this wrenching story about one of these deaths, a NICU nurse in New Jersey.
- “The death of a new mother is not like any other sudden death. It blasts a hole in the universe.”
- SCOTUS shut down the North Carolina GOP’s appeal on their restrictive voter ID law.
- Real news about how White House staffers feed Trump fake news.
- The housing market is on fiyah!
- For many Americans, teeth are an indicator of the unbridgeable divide between poverty and wealth.
- The doctors at M.D. Anderson know more about cancer than the rest of us, so maybe we should listen to them when they assert that in order to teach grade schoolers about sun protection, public schools should allow kids to actually bring sunblock to school.
- Librarians wonder what’s so great about Little Free Libraries, anyway?
- “You know what else is a free library? A regular library.”
- Here are some of the entries in National Geographic’s 2017 photo contest.
- Couture fashion is STEM.
- Pepe is dead.

Between Ryan and Callista Gingrich going to the Holy See, Wisconsans (is that the right way to refer to them?) have way too much influence in Georgia politics.
Any idea what it cost to make Newt’s previous marriages go away?
Cheeseheads.
Wisconsinite, Cheesehead… will answer to both, doncha know.
Cheesehead started as a slur by Bear fans in the 80’s. We just ran with it.
Visited a friend in WI a few years ago. That still stands as the most beer I’ve ever drunk in a 24 hour period. Seemed like everybody has a keg going at all times.
We had a kegerator in the basement growing up. Had two going at anytime. Also lots of Old Fashions. Bloody Mary’s and a beer chaser every Sunday after church with brunch at Grandma’s. We had virgin Mary’s as kids, but our chaser were real.
We need Finnish-style secondary education in Georgia too.
And K-12.

Georgia is planning to poison a human being tonight.
And your reason for not poisoning the guy is what?
Catholic News Agency reporter refers to new auxiliary bishop as former “airline pilot” in the Aeronautical Forces. Maybe she’s an alien. Or a robot pretending to be human.
Baker, and the process for selecting a bishop in the Catholic Church is about as transparent as the going-ons in North Korea or the admission of John Doe to any one of the private clubs in the area. Unlike in the Episcopal Church, the names of the candidates are never released in advance, so the laity cannot meet the candidates ahead of time and offer suggestions to their bishop for the next one. There are no interviews to be conducted; you have no idea you are even being considered for the post, so no wonder when selected, a bishop might say “why, I had no idea…it was like out of the blue.” Often the pope will pick a candidate he has never even met before, or if he has it might only be in passing, very quickly. It is a strange way to conduct business—I mean, how many firms would hire a person without even interviewing him or her?
Fun fact: Ryan has a 25/59 nationwide approval rating. Unless the GA-06 is on the moon, he’s not exactly someone you want on the stump with you. The fact that Handel keeps hugging Trump and Ryan and not popular local GA GOPers (the ad that the GA Chamber ran with Isakson being the exception) could well cost her, and demonstrates she still has the same terrible political sense we’ve seen over the years.
