Karen Handel’s 65 votes (49.62%).
Feel free to jump in and share your thoughts in the comments.
Edit 2: 10:23 p.m. – The race has been called by the AP, AJC, CNN, etc. Congratulations to Karen Handel, Georgia’s first female Republican member of Congress.
Edit 1: As of 9:45 p.m., Handel is up over 5.5% – 52.87% to 47.13%
Statement from Karen Handel:
”I am truly humbled by tonight’s results and I am honored to represent this great district in the United States House of Representatives. I will ensure the conservative legacy and leadership of Tom Price, Johnny Isakson and Newt Gingrich will continue. I want to thank all of my steadfast supporters who worked so hard and also my opponent Jon Ossoff, who ran a spirited campaign and I want to thank him for his commitment to public service.
These are challenging times in our nation. We are facing real and serious issues – from terrorism, protecting our borders to curtailing government spending. Tonight, voters recognized these are times that call for someone who brings real experience – in career and in life.
I know this has been a hard- fought election and I give Georgians this promise, I will work together with anyone who wants to create a better path forward for Georgia families and I will fight each and every day to make your lives better.”

The voters of #GA06 are the winners. We have endured the well funded persuasions of the entire nation. This unpleasant experience will be over tomorrow morning.
If you think it was unpleasant for you, what about the rest of us in the Atlanta metro area that are not in GA06, this has been pure agony. I just hope that the loser fades into obscurity.
Cox Enterprises, Fox Television, Tegna Media, Meredith Corporation… are already the clear winners.
Opposite of what Andrew said earlier (51-49 the other way)m but no scientific method behind that; if Ossoff does pull it out, it will be in part because of higher than normal Democratic showing in Cobb.
Both candidates are duds. Between the two, I’d rather Ossoff win but Handel will squeak by. Huge mistake for Ossoff courting moderate GOP instead of going further left. Embraced the strategy of the establishment Dems that has cost them 1,000 seats since 2009.
I remain convinced Hillary did well in Cobb (my neighborhood) because she had lady parts and Trump … well … he didn’t.
The women here were excited about voting for the first woman president. They knew she was a corrupt, inept, foreign nation owned pant-suit, but Hillary’s lady bits over-ruled their common sense.
The ironic thing is if Ossoff wins the women of Cobb will have stood in the way of the first woman US Representative from Georgia.
As if there was nothing in history- any history at all prior to this election- that prevented a GA woman getting elected to Congress.
minor correction: Georgia has had female representatives in the US House before now. Karen is the first female Republican from Georgia, though.
Clinton ran a progressive platform…c’mon, man. And, white wealthy voters elected Trump. How is he a horrible match for the demos of this district? Again, same arguments that never seem to work out for the Dems. Don’t forget about those on the right who identify as GOP but would go progressive if that choice existed, especially against a corporatist like Handel.
I didn’t realize people still quote Nate Silver after Trump won LOL.
“Clinton ran a progressive platform…c’mon, man. And, white wealthy voters elected Trump. How is he a horrible match for the demos of this district? Don’t forget about those on the right who identify as GOP but would go progressive if that choice existed, especially against a corporatist like Handel.”
What in the holy hell are you talking about. I don’t even know where to begin. Are you intentionally being dumb just to get a rise out of us?
“Huge mistake for Ossoff courting moderate GOP instead of going further left. Embraced the strategy of the establishment Dems that has cost them 1,000 seats since 2009.”
That is by far the dumbest thing I’ve heard recently. I pray that the democrats take your advice and go further to the left in 2018. Please…Please do that.
Handel by 2%. Dem turnout will be lower than expected. Pelosi’s Sherman-esque scorched earth tactics won’t pull it out. GA GOP’s ground game is too strong.
It’s 720 pm. Any numbers coming in from anywhere yet? If so, please share location! Thanks!
Couple of polls stayed open until 7:30 p.m.
How long does it take to compute a ballot that only had one choice each to tabulate? Perhaps someone needs to feed the squirrel.
And I love “A public service provided by Secretary of State Brian P. Kemp…” Right decent of the boy to personally spring for that site. I wonder how much it set him back?
Ok. It appears a Handel win. However, from my side, Ossoff has a huge head start among the Dems for Gov in 2018. He is not done. Not by a long shot.
AP just called it.
Yeah, pretty safe bet. DeKalb is 100% at this point, Cobb only lacks 1 precinct, while Fulton is only at 66% she is leading in Fulton by 6 points so far.
Handel: Called a little after 10, didn’t see that coming so early. In North Fulton/Cobb for the last month, few even wanted to talk about it, just get this over and hope the hystericals fade away. Ossoff will strutt over loosing.
Tonight, no real trash talk, just hoping the tortuous rehash will pass.
Statement from Speaker of the House David Ralston:
“I’m proud to congratulate Karen Handel on her victory tonight. She fought hard to earn the trust of her fellow GA-6 residents. I know she will represent them well in the United States Congress. She has my support and I look forward to working with her in the months and years ahead.”
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle:
“Join me in congratulating Karen Handel. A hard fought and well-deserved victory. I look forward to seeing her advance our conservative ideas and values in Washington.”
Woo Hoo! Great job,Karen! Don’tcha love it when that happens? Women rule! (Especially Republican women!! )
The libtards and the lamestream media framed this as a referendum on President Trump….. if so, don’t look now, but he won too. By 6% so far.
Noway, gotta disagree — the boy-man is toast in Georgia after the way he wrapped himself in California millions $$ and lied his ossoff in this campaign — where he cannot even vote! He couldn’t win dog catcher in this state. Maybe he should move to CA and run in Riverside or something.
My thoughts on his potential were this: huge name ID now, huge! Not saying I favor it mind you, but he’s just ridden a multi million dollar gravy train of other people’s money and has to actually be a winner tonight in that sense. Good night, everybody. No gloating. Y’all fought the good fight. Drew, get some rest and we’ll find our next subject on contention tomorrow!
yeah cause he’d have to primary an openly gay asian democrat to be a congressman from riverside…
Nice to see a turnout of over 50% of the electorate regardless of this being a “special” Special Election runoff. I really wish others would get on board in making every election a non-partisan primary with top two going to the final. We have had runoffs garner as little as 5% in the past.
As to Ossoff’s future, you have to walk before you can run. He is only 30 and perhaps he should run for the General Assembly first. Statewide at this point? Noway.
Gov. Nathan Deal:
“Congratulations Karen Handel on a hard fought race and well deserved victory. Georgia’s newest congresswoman will be an unwavering voice for our principles and a steadfast champion for our priorities in Washington. She will tirelessly represent the people of the 6th Congressional District and I’m proud of her success tonight.”
It’s very reassuring to see that “the most educated district in Georgia” could NOT be brainwashed by all the tens of millions worth of propaganda from California and Martha’s Vineyard.
Cheers to everyone in the 6th CD – you did good!!
John Watson, GAGOP Chair:
“The most expensive congressional race in U.S. history ended today in tears and broken dreams for the American Left. Billed as a referendum on President Trump, a model for beating Republicans in mid-term House races and a test-bed for issue-free and cash-centric campaigning, liberals were shocked by the intelligence and wisdom of the people of Georgia and handed a humiliating loss.
Democrats tried something new here this year; hand-picking candidate with no record, pretending he was a moderate, scripting him with vague, republican-sounding platitudes, and backing him with tens of millions of dollars in out-of-state money.
They were beaten by a conservative candidate with a solid record, an energized Republican Party and a president whose popularity surpasses the wishful thinking of our Democratic friends.
She proved the polls wrong, defied the pundits and is poised to deliver for her constituents as soon as she gets to Washington.
One of these days, the democrats are going to realize that their liberal policies and unhinged resistance to President Trump and the GOP majority in Congress have failed.
Until they moderate their tone and become part of the solution rather than the problem, they will lose. As a partisan, I understand their continued obstruction; as an American, I long for them to join Republicans and work to make our country even better.”
SOS Brian Kemp:
Tonight, former Secretary of State Karen Handel earned a decisive victory over democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District. In response, conservative businessman Brian Kemp issued the following statement:
“Despite the millions of dollars spent, thousands of paid activists shipped in from around the country, and countless lies told by her opponent and his radical supporters, conservative Karen Handel earned victory at the ballot box and sent a clear message to democrats far and wide that Georgia is a red state and it’s not for sale.
“Karen Handel has a proven record of accomplishments and she is uniquely qualified to serve Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District in Washington. I am confident that she will stand up for our conservative, Georgia values and fight tirelessly to ensure a better, brighter future for all Americans. We have some difficult challenges ahead but I know that Karen can handle it.
“Congratulations to Karen Handel, her campaign team and supporters, and the Georgia Republican Party on a well-deserved victory!”
So does Charlie now get a piece of the action? Is Mr. Harper going to Washington?
An unofficial breakdown of yesterday’s results for Fulton County, by city (Fulton accounted for 47% of the total votes cast in the runoff):
Traditionally Sandy Springs was a bright spot for Ossoff, where he got 55%. But Sandy Springs (the portion within CD 6–small part is within CD 11), accounted for just 22% of the county totals. North of there (above the Chattahoochee), Handel won 55% of the vote—and 78% of the county’s total votes yesterday were from north of the river…….
I meant to say “traditionally GOP” Sandy Springs in the previous post—but y’all probably figured that out anyway!
