Morning Reads for Tuesday, August 1
Good morning! We regret to inform you that the State Dinner honoring the Nigerian Crown Prince has been cancelled.
- Trump is a dictator! No, really: apparently, he dictated his son’s statement about his (fruitless) meeting with the Russians.
- In a blow to the NCGOP, a panel of Federal judges ordered North Carolina to redraw its district lines.
- Corey Lewandowski had a bad day yesterday, too.
- Two South Carolina utilities announces yesterday that they are “abandoning” two unfinished nuclear reactors (that have already cost $9 billion.) Currently, there are two other nuclear facilities under construction in the US. Perhaps, as a Georgian, you’re familiar with them?
- Following Trump’s remarks to a group of police last week, Cobb’s police chief assured the public that CPD treats all suspects “fairly and with respect.”
- White-nose syndrome is devastating Georgia’s bat population.
- It’s a big deal among conservationists: when I visited the Newberry National Volcanic Monument last month, before we explored the lava cave we had to assure the rangers that our clothes, shoes, and any gear we used had never, ever been in any other cave – and we can never wear those clothes, shoes, or use that same gear in any other cave again because the risk of contamination is so high.
- Richmond County State Court’s incoming chief judge wants to clean house.
- Atlantans may remember Mara Davis’ Radio Free Lunch. It’s back, in Spotify form.
- Many Trump administration officials and cabinet members attend the same Bible study that apparently approaches the Old Testament with a Trumpian perspective.

So Pence sponsors a conservative ministry bible study for the Trump cabinet, were the groups founder compares Pence to Joseph, the favored son sold off by his envious brothers who would become the powerful right hand of a pharaoh and saves his Israelite brothers in the end; and compares Trump to Sampson, the man defeated by a Philistine woman of questionable morals. Sampson would later die by asking God to allow him the return of his strength just one last time in order to pull down the house of the Philistine leaders who made him dance to their tune, taking every last one of them into the grave with him, weakening an enemy of Israel. Hmmm. Did I mention Pence is paying the tab for this guy?
One of the many compromises agreed to by the framers in the first session of Congress were chaplains for each House. So if the preacher is there entirely on the VP’s own dime I’m OK with it, however I’m in complete agreement with the chief framer Madison who had to give in to the congressional chaplains to get something else at the time that I don’t recall. He later wrote:
“If Religion consist in voluntary acts of individuals, singly, or voluntarily associated, and it be proper that public functionaries, as well as their Constituents shd discharge their religious duties, let them like their Constituents, do so at their own expense.”
The quote in the article that really has me scratching my head though is:
““I don’t think Donald Trump has figured out that he chained himself to the Apostle Paul,” Drollinger said, though it isn’t clear who the “Paul” is in this analogy.”
So is the preacher comparing himself to the Apostle or does he assume President Trump tied himself to Paul when he invoked his “Two Corinthians” on the campaign trail? In any case this reminded me of another founder’s opinion on Paul:
“Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him [Christ] by his biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence: and others again of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism, and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same being. I separate therefore the gold from the dross; restore to him the former, and leave the latter to the stupidity of some, and roguery of others of his disciples. Of this band of dupes and impostors, Paul was the great Coryphaeus, and first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus. These palpable interpolations and falsifications of his doctrines led me to try to sift them apart.” — Thomas Jefferson
Let’s hope the resistance doesn’t insist on Jeremiah Wright.
Most of the people I know personally in the “Resistance” are either Jewish, Social Justice Catholics, Hindu or atheists. I don’t think Wright will be an issue.
I was looking at it more in the fable tradition. Pence is framed as saving his brothers, while Trump is the one who destroys himself in order to crush the enemy (if I’m going down I’m taking you with me school of thought). It’s like the Drollinger is leading us down the road of seeing Pence as strong leader of integrity -Trump the shallow leader who squanders the gifts God gave him… I found that fascinating, even more so that Drollinger is leading the current cabinet down possible the same frame of mind.
I would be more appreciative of cabinet members who would attend a study group of the Constitution.
The question is where do we start, the Grammar series or the American series. Conjunction Junction, Interjections!, Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here… or – The Preamble, I’m Just a Bill, Three Ring Government, or The Great American Melting Pot. We can even have Jack Sheldon and Lori Lieberman sing them live for them if they have not fully retired yet.
Sorry, this has to be done. There’s so many more….
2 Timothy 4:3-4
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
I like maps. If I am reading this correctly, if Trump cuts payments to insurers, the people most effected will be in Trump won states, and even if you’re not on an exchange plan, your premiums wil most likelyl raise to cover the companies loses for the payments cut by the federal government to existing plans…

You know, all you can really dois shake your head! Only Trump would ever call the White House a “dump.” Lorddddddd….

Melania is redecorating from the previous tenants. The article is a hit piece on an ego driven country club owner that just might be a bit more trash talk hyperbole than golfers care for.
Gotta love the writers sniffing shock for his ex-wife’s behavior because she breast fed in front of Club ladies as a reason to reject his golf membership.
Breasts should only be seen in their swimsuit issues.
A Pence residency there could perhaps be just as bad for the country.
Yes, there’s no gilded throne, or anything lined with gold as it should be.
Ahhhhh….only in The South!
