Morning Reads for Tuesday, August 22
Good morning! I hope you enjoyed the eclipse. Here’s a recap. And here’s one way to let your eclipse glasses help other people enjoy future eclipses. You’ll now by now if you’ve burned your retinas beyond repair.

Georgia doesn’t have a spending problem……especially when it comes to public department heads:
AJC: : Today, the State Transportation Board will consider a 40 percent raise for Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry. Under the proposal, his pay would rise from $250,000 to $350,000 a year — far more than top transportation officials in other states examined by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.”
Ladies and gentlemen, small government.
In Georgia that means cut two workers/teachers and give one admin over 6 figures a big raise.
AJC afternoon reports the $100k raise was approved and in other news:
“The number of Georgia retired university employees, teachers and state employees receiving pensions of more than $100,000 a year has more than doubled in the past six years, according to retirement system records.”
Now back to more serious issues like marble statues and unilateral blame for all our problems.

There’s a new Afghanistan strategy. It’s similar to what’s been tried in the past, except that it’s totally different. Knowing the system better than anyone else, pesky details and metrics interfere with implementation. Why afford people an opportunity to criticize when what was said was not done, or when articulated results aren’t achieved? Been there, done that on healthcare. Whatever happens is the plan, the results were the objective, and the details and metrics are those of the military. Presidential!

Administration actions concerning the State Department have been prescient, too. No doubt the military values how they’ll be useful in dealing with Pakistan.
