Morning Reads for Tuesday, August 29
Good morning! Today’s morning reads include links about the Cajun Navy, Dolly Parton, Jim McIngvale, who – as anyone who has spent ten minutes in front of a TV in the Houston area knows – is better known as Mattress Mack. I only hope GeorgiaPol’s readers are ready for this many Great Americans. Charities I support because they are known for effective relief that reaches the people who need it most are Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the Houston Diaper Bank.
- NPR interviewed Mattress Mack yesterday evening to demonstrate “moments of grace” during an absolutely unprecedented American catastrophe.
- What’s in store for New Orleans and the Louisiana Gulf Coast this week?
- P.S. It’s the 12th Katrinaversary.
- Speaking of Katrina, how do Katrina and Harvey compare?
- A fascinating read on why the deployment of the Cajun Navy doesn’t mean the government is failing. It’s a “whole community” response.
- No, there’s not a shark on any Houston freeway, and other hoax Harvey photos.
- Gwinnett County plans for a transformative mixed-use development.
- Meanwhile, in Japan.
- A post-Charlottesville review of Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede. Note that the article is careful not to be critical of Dolly herself because Dolly is a Great American.
- Millennials don’t like doorbells because it means interacting with people.
- Other Great Americans include the people who invented the Tater Tot.

….read the Cajun navy had halted operations because looters were shooting at them and Joel Osteen would not open his 16,000 seat Lakewood church to soaking wet folks and Trump shoulda done something……guess we should wait on Fox News to sort this out.
GOP State Senator and candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania Scott Wagner: “And Mr. Soros, I would be like …. You know what’s amazing that a guy who came from Hungary—a Hungarian Jew—made a fortune. Think where he came from, and he has an opinion of America that he does. It’s just amazing to me.”
.
Tracker: Because of his ethnicity?
.
Wagner: No, because of his hatred for America.
.
When the Philadelphia Inquirer called him on his remarks the response was: “I’m trying to bring a little humor into it.”
.
Totally hilarious. Dem comedians can’t hold a candle to the guy.
Prescient in its applicability to the Arpaio pardon: “The benefit of controlling a modern state is less the power to persecute the innocent, more the power to protect the guilty.” David Frum in the March 2017 Atlantic “How to Build an Autocracy The preconditions are present in the U.S. today. Here’s the playbook Donald Trump could use to set the country down a path toward illiberalism”
