Morning Reads – Thursday, October 12, 2017
On this date in 1958, in the early morning hours of this day in 1958, 50 sticks of dynamite exploded at the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation, Atlanta’s oldest and most prominent synagogue. Mayor William Hartsfield condemned the bombings, as did Atlanta Constitution editor Ralph McGill in editorials that won the Pulitzer Prize.

If you pick up a pecan on the sidewalk you may be breaking the law.

The United States Men’s Soccer team lost to Trinidad and Tobago, and was eliminated from the 2018 World Cup.
Did the team stand for the National Anthem?
RIP Boy Scouts of America you unfortunately caught the dreaded Political Correctness (PC) disease which there is no cure and usually fatal. Now there is no place where a group of young men can gather by themselves to learn about life and practice being upstanding young men and future citizens.
I suppose now that the “Boy” has been removed from Boy Scouting the same needs to happen for “Girl” Scouts. After all discrimination in any form is bad, right? Now we can eliminate the gender specific titles so both programs can now be known as just “Scouts” and then both be combined into one program. No need for 2 separate programs.
So when will Girl Scouts start admitting Boy’s into their programs? Well not so fast. According to Girl Scouts, “Unlike the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts have maintained girls-only status for all their programs. The empowerment of girls is at the core of its mission.” Where have I heard something similar to that before? Why can there be a Girls only program but a Boys only program is discriminatory and must not be done.
According to what Girl Scouts are saying it is OK for them to discriminate but not Boy Scouts. In addition to that flawed logic a psychologist, Andrea Bastiani Archibald stated, “We know that girls learn best in an all-girl, girl-led environment.” Really then I guess according to her highly educated position do not boys similarly thrive in an all boy environment? The National Organization for Women has been pressuring the Boy Scouts to allow girls to join. Will they apply the same pressure for boys to join the Girl Scouts? Don’t hold your breath because you will turn blue and pass out.
Now that we have seen an organization such as the Boy Scouts of America succumb to the PC disease how much longer can a country such as the United States of America survive? If we keep drowning in Political Correctness I fear not for very long. Will Nikita Khrushchev’s prophetic statement come true? “We will take America without firing a shot … we will bury you!” Maybe Russia will not be the ones to destroy us because we are doing a good enough job ourselves.
Probably less about PC than it is about money:
“It’s also no secret that BSA membership has been declining for years. In 2016, the organization reported 2.3 million youth members, a decrease from 2.8 million in 2012. The Boy Scouts’ membership peaked in 1972, with 6.5 million members. ”
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/11/us/boy-scouts-will-allow-girls-to-join/index.html
The same is true for Girl Scouts according to the article in the link,
Girl Scouts reported more than 1.5 million youth members and 749,000 adult members, down from just over 2 million youth members and about 800,000 adult members in 2014. The Boy Scouts say current youth participation is about 2.35 million, down from 2.6 million in 2013 and more than 4 million in peak years of the past.
Loosing membership isn’t a Scout only phenomenon. This has been happening across all types of organizations. I think is has more to do with family time and monetary constraints.
I think I just found a Noway doppelgänger! Lol! Better late than never! It’s just more PC crap Raleigh. Just bring back Homec and teach the girls to cook and sew. That’s a start…better yet, what ever happened to “finishing schools?”
It’s called Family and Consumer Science now. It’s part of the CTAE at the middle school level. It teaches cooking, sewing, etc. By High School it’s part of the vocational career pathways under multiple classes, like Food Science and Fundamentals of Fashion. My weekly cleaning gentleman loved his classes in middle and high school. He did a great job making my new drapes too. Nice straight hems. The ones I made myself a decade ago were fading so I commissioned him to make the new ones. Don’t have time to sew anymore. Too busy doing my part of being a good capitalist.
Ahhhhh, so I and Raleigh are trolls for our beliefs and you are what, with your sputum laced, Socialist bellowing? Please enlighten us all!
Well, you keep on flogging that messenger with whom you disagree! And the real Americans will continue to become more politically active since being freed last Fall from having to cower in their corners for the last five decades. Ohhhhhh, don’t forget to call me a racist of some kind today!!
Norway don’t forget the FFA and FHA. For the unseasoned out there that stands for Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America. But except the FHA did change their name to FCCLA, short for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. At least it’s more PC.
Whatever the name change – can she hem her husband’s pants?
You’re more prickly than normal, Andrew. Retaining water?
And Raleigh, please keep posting. I’m the only one here that ever battles the Snowflakes!
If by “battle” you mean displaying the effects of having been hypnotized by a moron, then yes, I agree.
Boys have been FHA members at least since the 70s. Their name change occurred way back in 1999.
Everything changes, even including Americans and their culture, which you might realize and even appreciate if you ever stopped trying to score what you think are points against what you think is PC activity.
You’re assuming that PC activity did not exist way back in 1970, it did. Yes boys could be a member of FHA and take Homemec classes and Girls could take Agriculture and be a member of FFA although I don’t remember if any ever did. Those were as 4H was, a coed activity, however changing the name of FHA in 1999 was definitely PC . It all centered on the “Homemaker” stigma that a stay at home mom was less important by women with more feminist leanings. Don’t you remember that little college where they complained that Barbra Bush was not a good role model to come and speak because she chose to be a stay at home mom? I’d call those reasons very PC. At least I recognize it for what it really is.
You seem to be using the term PC as shorthand for things-you-don’t-like. So in your book feminism equals PC activity and working out of the house is feminism. All this time I thought women worked at outside jobs either because they wanted cash of their own or they had to support their families. Throw in increased opportunity in a post-war economic boom and it’s not surprising that the number of women in the workforce increased but it had little to do with any version of feminism and a lot to do with bringing in money.
I had to look up Bush’s speech at Wellesley. It turns out there were a grand total of 150 women who protested. That’s the kind of protest that goes on at colleges all the time, especially small expensive colleges, and so is the analysis behind the ‘teaching moment’ that followed. I wonder why you would hold a grievance over a minor incident at a small school nearly 50 years ago unless you’re just looking for something to complain about.

Your “Assume”ing how I view the term PC and the truth is you have no clue. I didn’t realize that you have mandated a time limit on PC and add a minimum participation for us all to follow. I’m sure we will all give the consideration it is due.
‘Your “Assume”ing how I view the term PC ‘
I can only go by what you write. You’re the one who mentioned a perceived slight from 50 years ago and condemned it as PC, a term you clearly enjoy using.
Personally, I always thought Barbara Bush was just a finishing school product who married well but Mrs. xdog, who has been supporting herself since high school and who I think can be fairly characterized as a fervent believer that a woman is the best judge of what is right for a woman, thinks Bar is tough and smart and all-in-all pretty cool.
So there you are. It’s a curious world if you look past easy labels.
So how far back do you have to go to avoid “PC”? The 60’s? The 50’s? The 1850’s? When was the golden age where people could just fill their natural role in society without any pressure from the elites (I guess)?
You can go back before the 1800 Presidential election to find PC to about the time the country was founded. I still don’t know why a Nutmeg salesman was considered such a lowlife back then.
I feel like the left out tag team partner who is leaning over the rope just hoping Raleigh will tag me in!!! He is, however, pile driving all comers woth great efficiency. It’s a beautiful thing to behold!!
