Wither the Mary Norwood Campaign?
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Mary Norwood has a commanding lead in the polls throughout her mayoral candidacy only to see it evaporate at the last second.
Well sorry but we’re getting an encore presentation of the 2009 Atlanta mayoral race. (Even better, she’s poised to head to a runoff with Mayor Reed the Second!)
Early last week, Norwood had 28% of the vote to Bottoms’ 12%.
I realize I’ve sounded like I’m partaking in a Norwood Campaign Deathwatch the past few days and with that in mind I should disclose: I’m a little disappointed Kwanza Hall is second to last.

The question is whether the anyone-but-Norwood sentiment falls squarely on Bottoms … or whether Aman can catch her. If you don’t like Norwood but would prefer not to fall into the Reed camp, Aman’s about the only one left in position.
Yeah, and the horse-trading between the top two candidates for the support of the others will be fascinating and I’ll likely post something on it in a bit.
Nice pun in the title.
If I were advising Ms. Norwood I would have told her to go for the knock out punch in the general election. Her history in run-off elections is not good. I realize that the field is so large that her plan was to coast into the run-off but…her performance as a candidate is weak. She’s good at going to meetings and being visible in the community, but her messaging is muddled and confusing. I don’t know what her vision for Atlanta represents and I’m not sure she does either. Is she even on the air? If so, I haven’t seen it. This looks a lot like the last time for her.
Vision? All I want is someone who can build a consensus for some productive stuff and not be corrupt.
I think Atlanta could use a break from the Jackson/Campbell/Franklin/Reed string of mayors.
Truthfully, I don’t really have anything against Bottoms, it’s just Reed’s personality I don’t like.
What the heck does that even mean?
As Campbell has nothing to do with the others … well let’s just say that you already know. And Matt is a “progressive” right? So is Harvey Weinstein I guess …
What I am MOST upset and outraged about is that he totally omitted Andrew Young – the guy who was so instrumental to bringing the Olympics here and thereby helping the city bounce back economically as well as reputation wise from its really bad stretches in the 70s and 80s – from his “string” and demand to know why 🙂 !!! Young was at least as good for the city’s image and economy as Reed was (though sadly not so much on the crime or education issues) and had a better personality to boot.
I was talking about Jackson’s second term, and yes, you can trace all subsequent Atlanta mayors to Maynard Jackson.
If you guys think it’s because I was referring to them because they are all black, well, that’s not what I was getting at. I don’t think I’ve ever labeled myself as a progressive, either.
