On this date in 1897, the man who served as the advisor to six presidents was born in Winder, GA. Richard B. Russell, a UGA grad and former Governor of the Peach State, was first elected to the legislature at age 23. He later became a U.S. Senator and championed the school lunch program. His other accomplishments include adding/maintaining 15 military installations in Georgia and 25 research facilities, including the CDC.
