Morning Reads – Thursday, November 9, 2017
On this date in 1886, John B. Gordon was sworn in as Governor of Georgia. Having served in the Civil War, Gordon was rumored to be a member of the KKK and was the First Commander of the United Confederate Veterans, but that didn’t stop him from ascending to the role of U.S. Senator.

Being rumoured to be a member of the Klan was an asset to most of Georgia’s voters for at least 75 more years, not that I take pride in that. Even with modern sensibilities on race however being the first commander of the Confederate veterans should not be considered ignoble. While their ultimate cause was far from noble, many who gave their lives were. Like most wars it came about due to the failures of politicians to resolve conflicts between oligarchs, though of course that is a vast oversimplification. The vast majority of Confederate grunts who did most of the dying did not own slaves or were not members of a household that owned slaves. There were many reasons they fought, some for their “country”, some were conscripted, some joined up with the local Colonel (typically a slave owner) for money, or to defend their community. Like most wars many gave their lives for their fellow grunts.
In the North there were also very few grunts who came from the monied class. You could legally pay someone else like a poor Irishman if you were drafted. This comes from a descendant of both Confederate and Union soldiers that were mostly southerners. My wife is a direct descendant of John A. Logan who was the 3rd commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (the counter group to the United Confederate Veterans) and the leader of the campaign that resulted in a national holiday for Memorial Day while at its helm. This was in response to the Confederates already having one.
All of the world’s money and markets.
And another establishment House Republican is shoving off from D.C. That’s what, the fifth announcement of a GOP seat being vacated in the in the last two weeks? Frank LoBiondo, who has represented southern New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District for more than two decades, is retiring at the end of this term. Democrats would have been hard-pressed to unseat him.
CNN: “Ed Gillespie’s resounding loss in Tuesday’s Virginia governor’s race — coupled with a series of other losses in lower-profile races around the country — will likely take what was bubbling concern among Republicans about their prospects in the 2018 midterms and transform it into a frothing cauldron of panic.”
Tuesday’s results will be overanalyzed and made more of than are warranted, but moves to the exits preceded Tuesday—There were rumors of LoBiondo retiring last weekend, and he made his announcement hours before VA polls closed.
its not an apples to apples comparison, i know but i go to a lot of high school football games and had never really paid much attention until this year, but those teams are in the locker room during the anthem, so tomorrow night i’m gonna have look for where the cheerleaders are as well…
Can I still deduct moving expenses under the GOP plan if I have to move because my employer was forcing me to relocate to retain my job.? No.
Can a corporation under the GOP plan still deduct outsourcing expenses for relocating a U.S. business outside the United States? Well, sure. Corporations are people too, but some people are more equal than others..
I have always half-expected DJT to pass a tax bill that enriches him and his family significantly, then call it Mission Accomplished and go on cruise control. The cost-benefit on the time and effort to campaign and be Pres. is clear.
That’s just an extension of the tacit deal between TinyHands and goper leadership — he’ll sign anything they pass as long as they turn a blind eye to his efforts to monetize the presidency.
While Nero fiddles around the eastern pacific, Rome is getting the kindling in place, the lighter fluid ready and hording it’s matches.

What I find annoying about all the GOP charts and conservative leaning reports all 3 of my elected congressional reps send me is that not one has a single childless example for someone making over $45,000. Not. One. It has no examples of what would be lost or gained if said single person had used a standard or itemized deductibles in the past. I have more then 15% health care costs, mortgage interest, SALT, work related expenses, and other things that far exceed what I would gain in a double standardized deduct- my personal exemption.
And when does this tax reform take place? On our 2017 taxes or the 2018? This will effect how I give to charities at the end of the year if I am going to have to ay more taxes by April and what medical expenses I need to accelerate, postpone, or in at least one case, forget about even doing until I can afford it or it become a necessity.
The whole standard v. itemized deduction should just be done away with. We should at least continue to incentivize charitable giving, esp. when it’s the nonprofit sector that has, and will need to continue to, step up in the wake of social service budget cuts.
Politico went to Pennsylvania. They were looking for Trump voters to say something racist. They found it. https://chamblee54.wordpress.com/2017/11/09/politico-goes-to-johnstown/
Convenient timing….
Are these echos of Dem desperation? Where have you gone Clarence Thomas?
To a life time appoimtment where he will never loose his job even if he admitted Ms. Hill was telling the truth.
Yes. The clockwork is releasing these charges now…38 years later. Maybe he can hire The Hag to smear HIS accusers?
Big deal, who cares over their timing. If the guy who tried to manhandle me when I was 19 (who I reported and got fired before the day even ended) runs for office, you better believe I’m going public. Don’t care if anyone believes me or not. He knows, I know, and I will let people who could vote him into power know.
Coming forward prior to the late 90’s had this’ Well, she must have done something to egg him on” excuse attached to going public. In the workforce it would have been seen as a liability for a woman – “that one is a trouble maker”. The only reason my harasser got fired is I had the bruises in the shape of his hand on my upper arm and he had the 4 bruises of a steel healed stiletto on the to of his foot plus a few on his ribs at the height of my elbow.
The dirges are starting.

As an Officer of the Court, do you not think Moore is entitled to defend himself? Pretty bad for someone in yor line of work.
‘Cause she’s tellin’ the truth and he’s automatically a liar? Am I getting this right? So, he has no right to a response to the accusations, is that it?!
I am. Everyone has the right to defend themselves from any and every charge leveled at them, criminal or civil. 100%.
You’ll see hundreds more. She did target Bill’s accusers. What’s the relevance yo this story? In fact, I can almost hear Carville making his “Draggin’ a dollar through a trailer park” comment now. Clinton was a proven sexual predator.
What has our politics devolved into when you can’t even get away with a live girl?

Well, Alabama…
Was she kin?
Sounds like “Controlling Legal Authority.”
An absolute avalanche of Weenified Snowflakes! Lol! Damn embarrassing…

Will the Cobb County Sheriff be screaming and whining about the cheerleaders?
