Morning Reads — November 27
Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It’s not too late to join a gym.
News by the Numbers
$6.6 billion – Did you miss Black Friday deals? Fret not, Cyber Monday is upon us. We are expected to spend over $6 billion today on deals.
1 pound – That’s the average weight gain Americans experience over the holiday season (late November through early January). Two studies, one in 2014 and one in 2017, confirmed that number…I must be an outlier.
2 Chainz – The Trap House is back with Christmas cheer. You can visit Trap Wonderland seven days a week from 5 PM – 10 PM.
80 percent – The New York Times wrote about illegal immigrants in Atlanta. Spoiler: they’re getting deported in record amounts. It’s up 80% this year alone.
22 laughs – You’re welcome.
203,086 requests – Guns were a hot commodity on Black Friday. The FBI saw a 10% increase in requests for background checks. It set a new record for background checks in a single day.
2 candidates – Atlanta’s race for mayor can boil down to gentrification. The median home value in Atlanta has risen 53% since 2010, faster than the national rate of 27%.

18 people were killed by police in the United States last week. https://chamblee54.wordpress.com/2017/11/26/killed-by-police-november-26/
Here a read on how the “compassionate conservatism” (my application of the phrase to article ideas, not application of the phrase by the article itself) of Republicans of only a decade or two ago is being jettisoned in the GOP tax bill to reward capital at the expense of labor: https://www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2017/11/16/16665604/republicans-tax-reform-labor-capital-wages
A couple of choice quotes:
“If the United States is going to run a deficit, it shouldn’t do so in order to reduce the taxes paid by those at the top. Yet it is extra irresponsible given recent economic developments. Corporations are flush with cash from large profits and aggressively low interest rates, yet they aren’t investing. This is a big hint that large tax cuts for corporations will have very little effect on the economy.”
“Notably, because around a third of stocks are foreign-held, a significant amount of the benefit won’t even go to US citizens. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates that “foreign investors would receive [benefits roughly equal to the] benefits that would go to the bottom three-fifths of Americans.”
“Much of the plan involves changing the definition of “income,” in various ways. A central part of the reform plan involves reducing the taxes on “pass-through” entities like sole proprietorships, S corporations, and partnerships. This creates a huge incentive for people to take whatever it is they do for a living and redefine it as a pass-through company. In 2012, Kansas went down this road: It entirely eliminated state taxes on pass-through companies. A team of economists looking at taxpayer data has found that the main effect has been for people to simply reclassify their income to dodge taxes, while not actually starting any new businesses.”
It’s sad how little reality, facts, and logic matter to a GOP establishment beholden to service at the pleasure of the rich.
Pie-Gate? Seriously? A so-called journalist trolls Sanders. You people are genuinely insane! But hey, I know I take y’all seriously! Lol!
I try to avoid gotchas but can’t resist airing the pleas of the Fayette County GOP Chairman to beware Global Elites and especially the color purple.
I suppose I should be happy that Muslim Presidents and using Walmarts as detention centers are out of vogue.
There was a time when nut jobs were confined to the fringe of the Republican party, but now nut jobs are main line party leaders and elected officials. At least he doesn’t know about the secret handshake!
Know them by their garments that thee may cast out evil Demoncrats in the mighty name of Jesus.
Who besides me wants the list of Congressional harassers released? And wouldn’t you know – Congress exempted themselves from FOIA years ago. Calling Wikileaks: Julian, can you get us this list??
You’re an idiot. And where, praytell, is your outrage and calls for the dismissal of Franken and Conyers?!?! Hmmmmm??? GaPol’s favorite weenie Socialist is strangely silent on their removal for their own acts of sexual battery and harassment! What an absolute tool you continue to be…
