Morning Reads for Friday, December 22, 2017
Those of us at GeorgiaPol wish some of our readers a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season.
Others, not so much.
- Yea, verily, the carcass** is now complete.
- This Roswell salon is the last stop for perfectly styled Santas.
- Yellow River Game Ranch closes.
- Auntie Em! Auntie Em! There WAS a tornado in Wednesday’s storms!
- Yummy onions in the air.
- IKEA coming to Cobb.
- No, not in the Hall of Faces way, either…
- Bless their itty bitty little hearts.
- When parents need a time-out.
- Those evil, greedy corporations!
- That’s not a lighthouse, it’s a Festivus Pole, and you know it.
- Witnessing God’s hand can often be a mystery.
**My morning commute takes me northbound on Northside. On Monday, in the thick fog, two beams stuck out of the Dome rubble at an upward angle in the dim mist. Reminded me of the first Aliens movie, when Ripley sees the crashed alien ship through the monitor for the first time. Creepy as all get out.

Surely someone has already stepped up to save General Lee?
Skull shaped asteroid is coming back.
Compelling evidence that Boo is the center of the Pixar Universe.

The first lines of Ariel Hart’s column from yesterday’s AJC:
“Insurance brokers all over Georgia got a clear, helpful message from the federal government on Friday about the end of window to sign up for Obamacare. ‘Open Enrollment Ends Today at 11:59pm (PST): This is the final day to enroll consumers for coverage all year! ‘ Only, it wasn’t true.”
The Irma Emergency Declaration made Georgians eligible for open enrollment for an additional two weeks beyond the normal 15 Dec end of enrollment period. Who knew? By and large not Georgia insurance agents.
Let’s see. The Irma State of Emergency declaration occurred the second week in September. Competent senior government administration would have been aware of the extension before November, ample time to make it known.
As someone that had to bear with a family member stressing over what Obamacare plan to choose just ahead of last week’s deadline, enough already! Nobody’s saying a television advertising campaign was warranted, but Jesus, it would have required only a little webpage programming, a few e-mails, and a couple of phone calls to get the word out. I’ll wager $1,000 at 1:10 odds the AJC and local TV media would have publicized an extension had it received an appropriate request.
We get it. The GOP hates ACA, affordable health care, (at least until they or their family needs it, that is). Failure to communicate the sign up extension isn’t incompetence, it’s the GOP’s Gingrich perniciousness to willful Trump maliciousness.
Rule of law. Transparency. Efficiency. Words that are on the path to being as meaningful as the words “fiscal conservatism” coming out of a Republican mouth, blather that would be laughable were it not so damaging. Crowing about a tax law that borrows $1.4 trillion to mostly give to the rich has seen to the latter.
A while back I mentioned that I saw Fulton County Prosecutors moving into a storefront in SW ATL, Here is more info on that:
http://www.atlantafultoncountyda.org/community/community-prosecution/
I must say I still don’t really understand it. I don’t know why prosecutors would need to be in the neighborhood or what good it does. Not a criticism, just curiosity. The blurb above is kind of generic and vague. I might stop in there and talk to them one of these days.
Here’s a little more info. There’s apparently a DA’s trade association (or whatever that would be called):

1. Recognizing the Community’s Role in Public Safety
Rather than dictating to the public how to handle all crime and safety issues, community prosecutors invite community stakeholders to express their safety concerns, identify neighborhood problems, brainstorm appropriate responses and help the prosecutor’s office establish priorities.
Tax Cut bill signed by The Great Man. He just loves keeping his promises!!

“AT&T’s payment will go to union-represented, non-management and front-line management employees, the company said Wednesday. The Dallas-based telecommunications giant also reiterated its plan to invest an additional $1 billion in the U.S. next year.”
This had nothing to do with the tax cut. This was a deal worked out with the union months ago. AT&T is just trying to stoke Trump’s ego
And Wells Fargo. And Comcast. And Fifth Third Bancorp. And on and on and on.
All just coinkee dinkees. Nothing to see here I am sure.
McLaughlin Group back January 7th. Tom Rogan in the center seat. Clarence, Pat and Eleanor back with guest panelist. Best show of its kind ever created.
