Monday Morning Reads — January 15
Happy Monday, everyone!
11 events – around Atlanta honoring MLK. Bring a jacket!
$11 billion – Ford is increasing its investment in electric vehicles by 2022. Previously they had committed $4.5 billion by 2020.
1 year later – The Trump family has acclimated to DC living and political theater. From an independent First Lady to ethical delimmas, each member has their own role.
2018 elections – are just around the corner and gerrymandering is front and center. Asked why [he gerrymandered North Carolina], one GOP state legislator involved in designing district boundaries had a pithy explanation: “Because I don’t believe it’s possible to draw a map with 11 Republicans and two Democrats.”
70 years – since MLK graduated from Morehouse. Many of his classmates have died, but one who lives discusses attending class with him.
2 billion – Facebook users will notice a change in their timeline. Find out what’s happened.

Senators David Perdue and Tim Cotton went from two days of no recollection to an emphatic no that Trump said “s—hole” countries in Trump’s discussion of immigration last Thursday. Presumably they confered and it was agreed Trump said “s—house” countries.
That different second syllable completely changes the whole context, totally. So of course saying Trump had said “S—hole” when he really said “s—house is a gross misrepresentation!
Lest there be no misunderstanding about what the Republican base thinks, Ann Coulter, sans the — because that’s what Republicans now think of norms, tweeted: “Okay, yes — Trump shouldn’t call them “s—thole countries.” A little respect is in order. They s—-hole nations.”
The real, not fake, news explanation for Trump’s language was that Democrats had brought him a plan to address DACA that was so awful, he couldn’t help becoming intemperate. Except it wasn’t a Democratic plan. It was a bipartisan plan.
Establishment Republicans bowed their heads and slunk away, natch—it’s become their MO. They can’t be expected to stand up for norms, women, or people of color, when they won’t even stand up for themselves.
“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
That goes for feigned ignorance and willful stupidity, too.
I wasn’t as anti-Perdue as others here, but this episode has demonstrated that he’s a top-shelf sycophant and racist enabler, at the least. I sure hope Republicans find a viable more ethical candidate to replace him.
Again, not to be a one note guy about this issue. The seat could be Cleland’s if he ever wanted it back. View it as payback for Saxby’s perceived insults. And anti-Trump sentiment, whether it be real or not, this could be a “right place, right time” moment for Max.
Max is 75 and that seat doesn’t come up again until 2020. I’m not so sure he wants it or if he could win it at this point.
If Sally Yates wanted to run for something as a Dem that might be a good gig for her.
Oh, I don’t think he wants it either. I’m basically just hot stoving it. I just don’t know why he never went for it earlier. 2008 or 14 would have been doable. I just don’t know of a strong GA Dem to challenge Johnny or Purdue.
We’ve got TheFakies, as Stephen Colbert calls the fake news awards Trump said he’ll bestow on Wednesday, to look forward to. Before Trump had postponed them to this week Colbert tweeted: So excited for Monday’s “MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR!” See you on the red carpet, @AndersonCooper! #TheFakies Check out the Oscar style add that accompanied the tweet: https://twitter.com/StephenAtHome/status/948765450946543616/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailykos.com%2Fstory%2F2018%2F1%2F14%2F1731203%2F-Trump-s-fake-news-awards-put-him-in-dictator-territory
Then there was the Daily Show’s Trevor Noah running a full page Oscar style “For Your Consideration” ad in the NYT: https://twitter.com/EamonJavers/status/949262406865350657/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailykos.com%2Fstory%2F2018%2F1%2F14%2F1731203%2F-Trump-s-fake-news-awards-put-him-in-dictator-territory
Samantha Bee, not to be outdone, tweeted her own “For your consideration” ad along with “Nice try @colbertlateshow and @TheDailyShow, but we’re sweeping the #Dishonesties this year. (P.S. @realdonaldtrump, how about a female host next time?)” Check out the ad that accompanied her tweet: https://twitter.com/FullFrontalSamB/status/948917072716881920/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailykos.com%2Fstory%2F2018%2F1%2F14%2F1731203%2F-Trump-s-fake-news-awards-put-him-in-dictator-territory

Sounds like there was a mechanical problem with one of the engines surging causing the plane to veer left. I would think Boeing will be all over this one. There are a ton of 737-800’s in service all over the world
FYI…Delta currently flies 77 of these planes
