We received a note from Georgia House Speaker David Ralston’s office concerning the federal government shutdown after the Senate failed to adopt a Continuing Resolution last night.
“I’m disappointed and disturbed that Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi and their liberal colleagues have chosen to shutdown our federal government. They’ve irresponsibly sacrificed the well-being of children on CHIP health insurance and the financial stability of our military families to pursue a selfish political agenda. Just as our nation had begun to benefit from President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a small group of left-wing radicals tries to derail our progress.
In Georgia, we have benefitted from responsible financial stewardship and strategic investments over the last seven years. Thanks to Governor Deal working in partnership with the legislature, together we have empowered the private sector to create more than 650,000 jobs and seen record-low unemployment. We’ve also replenished our rainy day fund while implementing conservative reform measures to preserve and sustain the HOPE Scholarship and our public education system as well as our roads and bridges. I will never understand why some in Washington feel they can govern so recklessly when the future of our economy is at stake.”

Congress is continuing to negotiate an agreement to a new short-term CR to fund the federal government for a few weeks.
