Morning Reads for Tuesday, February 6
Good morning! It’s one week until Mardi Gras!
- Applause. It’s swung from “Please clap,” to the notion that to not clap is akin to treason. Well.
- Today is Girl Scout Day at the Capitol. A couple of things: more than 300 Girl Scouts will be at the Capitol today, and they are serious about naming the bridge over the Savannah River for founder Juliette Gordon Low. If you’re planning on being at the Capitol, bring cash; cookies are $4/box.
- Related: Here’s the NYT obit for Governor-Elect Eugene Talmadge, who ran on a platform of “White Supremacy,” and whose death in December 1946, weeks before his swearing-in, lead to the infamous “Three Governors Controversy” (paging Holly…)
- Here’s the thing: that Dodge as that sampled MLK’s 1968 “The Drum Major Instinct” sermon was tasteless and tone deaf. Full stop.
- Here’s another thing: It was produced with the full consent of the King Estate. The King Estate is not to be confused with the King Center.
- Another tragic result of the Flint, Michigan water crisis is a fatal outbreak of pneumonia.
- How did a Cuban national die in a Georgia detention center?
- “Why John Portman mattered.”
- In Athens, finding Bertis Downs.

From Forbes, a timeline tying together the various elements about how the FBI and Justice department tried to ensure the election of Hillary.

And this article, folks, highlights why this ain’t over. Trump’s done nothing wrong. The whole Muiller investigation is a sham. And Trump should not testify for a set-up perjury trap. If not under oath is good enough for Hillary, it’s good rnough here.
What in the world is a perjury set-up trap? Is that some new invention being hawked by Hannity or something? You can not commit perjury when you tell the truth. You only do if you lie. Plain and simple. What appear to be contradictions, btw, are not lies, because they can be reconciled or explained by through reasonable logic. For instance, you can have a change of opinions, or a change of heart. But you can’t say that you didn’t know anything about a meeting with the Russians downstairs if you actually did know something. And the perjury charge in that example would only be brought if there was clear evidence that Don Jr. did in fact tell his Daddy about the meeting. So, one lies to hide or deny the truth. The only “set-up” for perjury is that you know you will need to lie.
Right, it’s a trap in the sense that the prosecutor knows the subject has to lie or face the consequences of truth. It’s not a set-up, though, because that would be like calling the criminal statute itself the real conspirator.
Technically no one is under oath when being interviewed by the FBI. However; lying to the FBI is a crime.
And the only (possibly) productive purpose for continuing to show the untruthfullness of the Nunes memo is that when further people get indicted regarding this matter it would be nice that we all agree that it was a legitimate investigation. Nunes is purposely lying to you in order to try to de-legitimize the investigation, so even after Justice has weighed in those who are willing to accept the lies they are being told might still not accept the truth. Nunes is doing a great disservice to the country and he may well end up in a lot of trouble himself. It is hard to understand his motive otherwise if it isn’t to try to protect himself. Nunes himself even admitted that he knows that the FISC was informed of the political source of the Steele dossier. He also must know that there was a significant amount of other evidence to go with that warrant application. But he is purposely lying.
This article in part repetitively relies on one thing that is already reported to be false– which is that the FISA court did not know of the political players behind the dossier. It also omits a lot of other relevant facts.
Generally, I think it’s clear that political appointees, and most all people, have political preferences. Those preferences should not improperly interfere with professional decisions, but the FBI has to also weigh and balance broader political implications of its actions when elections are involved. They struggled to do it right regarding HRC, and I think more broadly, Obama failed in that struggle by not doing more about Russian interference. But, HRC’s emails did not implicate collaborating with a foreign power, as a starting point. So it’s easy to see how anyone would weigh and balance and determine DJT’s actions as much more troubling, and thus worthy of the FBI’s time.
Calling Democrats un-Amercian was a threshold GOP extremists crossed over a decade ago. Trump is MAGA by doing so from the White House.
Calling them treasonous, though, is a perfectly complementary dynamic for a Constitutional crisis.
I haven’t checked today. Any tweets about treasonous financial markets?
Just Immigration and Edwin Jackson as of now.

He seemed to remember he has a budget to pass and he’s already blaming demarcates for the House sending over a bill to the senate that can’t get 60 votes – since he had to make the freedom caucus happy to get it passed on his end in the first place.

Odd:
“Investigators on the House Intelligence Committee have pored over thousands of emails from the Trump transition team but can’t find Pence’s name in any of them, even though he led the transition, said a Democrat familiar with the House’s Russia probe. ”

“People who believe in Trump will never consider a substitute no matter how similar in policy positions, rhetoric, or business experience, because support for their champion has nothing to do with policy positions, rhetoric, or business success. It is, at its core, personal and emotional — like the backing for other authoritarian poseurs who have at times managed to convince multitudes that they and they alone possessed the supernatural abilities to achieve or restore national greatness. ”
