Shigley maintains cash edge in race for Appeals Court
From a campaign press release:
At the end of the latest disclosure period, former State Bar president Ken Shigley maintained a lead in funds reported in his race for an open seat on the Georgia Court of Appeals. The only other candidate is former Democratic nominee for attorney general, Ken Hodges. Shigley has raised a total of more than $519,000 and has $441,000 cash on hand.
“I’ve traveled across every region of Georgia during this campaign and held events in every major city,” Shigley said. “Voters want a judge who is qualified, experienced, impartial and committed to interpreting the law as written. I believe my long career representing a wide variety of clients in private practice has prepared me well for this public service, and I’m ready to contribute to the excellent Georgia justice system.
“I see service on the court as the culmination of a long career, not a springboard to higher office. I will do the job without jockeying for advancement to something else.”
Shigley served as president of the State Bar of Georgia from 2011 to 2012. The volunteer position involved intense interaction with the executive, legislative and judicial branches of state government and all classes and levels of judges statewide, a 150-member board of governors, 16-member executive committee and staff of 75 in three offices in Atlanta, Savannah and Tifton. He later chaired board of trustees for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education in Georgia.
“For 40 years, I have represented clients in Georgia courts, down in the trenches. Completing the cycle of service as State Bar president, I got a 40,000 foot view of our state’s legal system but also how our judiciary functions in conjunction with the legislative and executive branches. That background will be an asset to the court,” Shigley said.
Gov. Nathan Deal’s Judicial Nominating Commission in 2012 placed Shigley on the short list for appointment to the Court of Appeals. Shigley has hired the campaign consultants who organized Appeals Court Judge Chris McFadden’s successful race for the bench.
