Friday Morning Reads — February 23
I’m filling in for Ginny this Friday. Let’s jump into it.
- Russian bots took aim at Congressman John Lewis, Atlanta, and CNN.
- Speaking of Russia, an oligarch, who boasts close ties to Putin and Assad, had his mercenaries attack US troops in Syria.
- Two West Forsyth High School students were arrested yesterday for threatening to shoot up their school on social media. Neither had access to weapons.
- Republicans running for higher office proposed ending gun-free zones and employing more armed security.
- Another blunder that resulted in the deaths of 17 students was discovered late yesterday: The sheriff deputy assigned to the school never entered the building once gunfire started. He resigned after the news went public.
- Earlier this week, Governor Deal announced an income tax cut to offset a tax increases caused by federal tax reform. The House passed it yesterday.
- Missouri Governor Eric Greitens was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of invasion to privacy after a woman accused him of taking compromising photos of her for blackmail. His mugshot isn’t great.

Alexandria is great and I ride the metro everyday. We decided to live in Northern Virginia because the taxes are slightly less and I could keep all my guns without having to register them.

It sure is impressive watching kids that were eating Tide Pods last week telling us about the 2nd amendment…really? Why not have school choice? You send your kids to schools that are soft targets and no defense and I will send my kids to a school with an armed security guard and personnel that are trained. That seems to a workable solution. Which school do you think is safer? I don’t want to have to wait for the cops to get there.. Plus Americans will still have the right to protect themselves. Does anyone know the words….”shall not be abridged” and what they apply to?

Let me add, what will the facility, district liability, and district causality insurance policy cost increase be? Fact; there are school systems that refuse to allow a school trip out side the county due to the additional liability rider’s cost. There are districts the can’t afford the insurance increase to allow non-school district related events (like federally funded after school programs, sport tournaments beyond GHSA schedules game) on school grounds.
The individual right to carry was established by activist judges over the past 40 years. Corporations having rights comparable to individuals is another instance of judicial activism. Except that it’s not judicial activism unless it’s the evolution of law opposed by the GOP.
We can (and should) arrest students for making terroristic threats who have no access to weapons and can’t find an ex-student who made terroristic threats and signed his real name who had access to weapons.
That is a new definition for Irony…

I’m just relaying the info that a $6.7 trillion centralist-right leaning investment management servicing company is looking at ‘possibly doing’ through their shareholder’s proxy. They own almost 20% of Smith and Wesson, 14% of Ruger, and 10% of AOB, plus 8 % of Dick’s sporting goods. As the owner of 1/5 of Smith and Wesson, IF they want stronger requirements then what the government minimally allows to sell a gun, they can. IF they force through shareholder vote to refuse Dick’s from selling to any one under the age of 21, they can legally do so. They are not stopping an 18 year old from owning a gun, they are saying our companies are not going to be the ones doing it – IF they force the issue. It’s actually good PR on their part.

Blackrock has those funds already in various forms …. for example iShares MSCI USA ESG Select (SUSA).
The iShares MSCI USA ESG Select ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. companies that have positive environmental, social and governance characteristics as identified by the index provider.
It’s performance is better than broad indexes, of course it owns the stock of it’s parent, Blackrock.
It also has a much larger client base of public employees (institutions) retirement funds they manage, including state wide school systems, nurses, law enforcement, etc., which some are asking to have all funds owning AOB and a few other AK-15 manufactures, removed from it’s investment portfolio. BlackRock is going to need to either shift client assets from one fund to another or move the stock from one fund to the other if it wants to keep the client. The other option is to create new specialized funds to cater to certain clients. Again, it’s good PR for them, with out selling a single gun manufacturing stock.
