Morning Reads for Tuesday, June 12
Good morning! I’m back.
It’s primary day in several states. Here’s how Maine’s ranked choice voting works.
- A new book, written by a Georgian, makes the case that Jimmy Carter is our nation’s most underrated one-term President.
- A decision regarding the decades-long GA-FL-AL water wars might come this summer. What could it mean for Georgia’s farmers?
- Increased fees for hunting and fishing licenses are a boon for the Department of Natural Resources.
- Georgia’s top public universities are working to recruit more students from rural Georgia.
- A group including academics and representatives from government and NGO environmental groups released a roadmap for how climate change might impact Georgia.
- A quick-and-dirty rundown of the distracted driving law.
- Sea World and IKEA are among companies that are eliminating plastic straws and bags.
- Here are tips to keep the children in your life safe when you’re at the pool or the beach. Having swim lessons doesn’t mean your child is water competent.
- Do you live in one of the nation’s most disaster-prone zip codes?
- Ben Affleck’s Savannah-area estate is for sale. All you need is $9 million and maybe some Lysol.
- If you prefer the river to the beach, you only need around $7 million to buy Tom Glavine’s house in Alpharetta.
- The world’s biggest inflatable slide is in Acworth. (I am not a Fun Mom so this isn’t in the cards for my kids.)
- Here are this year’s Tony Award winners, and here is a Tiny Desk Concert featuring multiple Tony winner The Band’s Visit (yes, that’s Monk.)
- Anthony Bourdain’s 1999 essay in the New Yorker launched his career as a food writer and television personality. It holds up, and it’s worth a read.
- HANGER IS REAL.

Kim said even before they met that he was not going to give up his nukes. I was watching laughing. It was like some kind of carnival barker autocrat freak/reality show.
Here’s my problem. You don’t just meet with someone without months and months of the state department working on it. Of course, there is no state department for the most part anymore. It’s not about rooting one way or the other. I just frankly have no faith that Trump knows what he is doing and he just proved that now with North Korea and before with the G7 meeting. Justin Trudeau deserves to be put in hell and it’s an honor to meet with Kim Jung-un? This is some kind of bizarro thinking going on here. At this point everything seems to turn into some carnival barker freak show and so I’ve just gotten to the point where I laugh. Rick Wilson says everything Trump touches dies and at this point I’m tending to agree with him.
Perish the thought!! Gaspppppppppppp….

Ranked Choice Voting is an existential threat to conservatives?? Oh please. I will say that there are many conservatives who are hell-bent on restricting voter turnout as much as possible.
So how does all this plastic get into the ocean? Is this because cities are taking barges of garbage out into the sea and dumping there? Or is it just blowing out off of the beaches?
Actually Ranked Choice Voting is a threat to conservatives because of this dirty little secret…they are a small minority that happens to be loud enough to gain attention and get through primaries mostly without a majority of votes. RCV, had it been in place, Maine never would have had LePage. Mind you, when I say “conservative” thats generally the wingnuts that call themselves conservatives…Birchers if you like. They would be marginalized in line with their real numbers.
I know. That story is a little scary. Maine Republicans are not even pretending to want to appeal to a majority of voters, they want to win with a minority and to hell with everyone else.
Reminds me of Josh McKoon.
In many ways, Maine is replacing California as the great laboratory of democracy. Ranked voting, successful independent candidates, electoral votes allocated by CD.
The world wakes up today a liitle bit safer because of The Great Man! Thanks for your leadership Mr. President!!
Yes, please do explain your rationale.
The guy posts links from InfoWars and RT. Rational ain’t got nuthin’ to do with it.
And the National Inquirer broke the John Edwards scandal. Keep on shooting them messengers!!!! Cry Closet, now, Will!!! LMAO!!
We used to get canned for repeating posted comments. You have posted that same video at least a half-dozen times since the inauguration. Like a good little troll when called to task your only response is name calling and goading.
Yes even a blind hog finds an acorn ever now and again especially when you break from journalism and pay your sources or in Trump’s case I believe the Enquirer took his money to NOT publish the same kind of stories on him. RT reposts Reuters stories on its site but that doesn’t make them journalists either. They also were an eight billion ruble line item in the 2012 Russian budget. What is your piece of that action?
Ready the surface of Rushmore, people. And put in that call to Stockholm!!
As I have examined before, any open areas on Mt. Rushmore are unstable -which may be a fitting correlation to the man in general – it unfortunately makes it too dangerous for rock cutters to attempt.
Nation’s leading documentary film maker’s new film to compare Trump to Lincoln!

“other two-bit rouge regimes” Typos can be so much fun. Rouge regime might be a good way to describe President Tiny Hands.
In other news, up-and-coming celebrity Jordan Peterson is in town. If you want to hear his message, and don’t want to pay $60 and go downtown, here is the show he did three days ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=22&v=bL3YoOPzwZo
History was made today. A member of the Trump administration apologized for something!!!!

Dead man walking.
Rick Wilson stated the same sentiment on Sunday afternoon about Larry Kudlow… 26 hours later… Careful…
C’mon GOP, is this really who you want to be?!
GOP congressional candidate: Diversity is ‘a bunch of crap and un-American’
“When we talk about women saying, well, we need special care for child care, we need this credit and that credit, say, wait a minute, when America was great, one parent alone earned more than enough money to comfortably support a family,” he continued. “,/i>
https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/11/politics/republican-new-jersey-diversity/index.html
We can’t even agree that women should be allowed to work if they want to?
But my current working premise is that much of this, as usual, isn’t about principles, it’s just about political advantage. “Diversity” is bad for the GOP since the GOP has done virtually nothing lately to attract diverse voters, so diversity must be made into an enemy.
“when America was great, one parent alone earned more than enough money to comfortably support a family.”
I.e. “I do not know a thing about how our economy works nowadays, or how equality actually works.”
That is who they are and it is who they are stuck being until they get beaten at the polls quite a few times. This guy is just shopping the white evangelical line. He’s not the first and will hardly be the last to spew this nonsense.
Sonny Perdue to save the day!
Trump officials kick into damage-control mode with Canada
In one sign of the change in tone, the Department of Agriculture announced Monday that Secretary Sonny Perdue would head to Canada later this week to meet with his counterpart Lawrence MacAulay.”
Would love to be a fly on the wall at that one.

Conceding joint military exercises?? Since when have the Dim Bedwetters cared anything about anything military? Y’all are a scream!!! LMFAO!
Too soon to know how it will play out. Will know more in the next few months. I will say anyone at this point claiming that Trump got played, cannot now or evermore be taken seriously on any topic. That is just warmed over goulash from a daily kos like site.
We are certainly better off in these negotiations having a foreign policy team of Pompeo, Bolton , Haley et al than the clown carnival of Ben Rhoades, Samantha freaking Power and feckless Kerry.
Also laughing at anyone who thinks we have conceded joint military exercises. As these have already finished this year and obviously could and would be continued next year if Kim shows no real movement. Trump’s statement on the exercises was essentially flotsam.
For Caroline’s benefit, Snivler here has many alter egos on this site. The one he’s displaying now his “Skool Marm” personna! Commenting on spelling, Mewler? Really?!? Alpha schooled you! Whether it be my usual daily task or his takedown, accept that you’ve been educated by your superior(s) and be quiet.
“[U.S. Forces in Korea] has received no updated guidance on execution or cessation of training exercises – to include this fall’s schedule Ulchi Freedom Guardian,” Lt. Col. Jennifer Lovett said, according to Reuters.
Just sayin’.
That was supposed to be a response to alpha.
Jeez.
Seriously you’re praising the people who told us Iraq had WMDs? The guys who told us the Iraqi’s would welcome us with flowers? The GOP just isn’t credible on foreign policy anymore with most Americans. It’s kind of obvious what’s going on here to most people but apparently not to you.
I think Cotton’s actions are perfectly understandable given that he’s down with Donald and he wants to be president. It’s not hypocrisy or a reversal, just another move of a man on the make.
The only thing I know about Korea is I like kimchi so I found this article from last year informative.

When you figure out conservatives really don’t have any beliefs other than being some sort of knee jerk anti-liberal and are basically toddlers sitting in the corner with a dirty diaper flinging poo against the wall it all makes sense.
Here is a little nugget that just came out
“The BBC correspondent in Beijing and the BBC Bureau Chief for North America say that China (specifically, the government spokesman in a daily briefing) announced that the US had agreed to suspend military exercises with South Korea before President Trump announced it in his press conference. In other words, they knew in advance.”
Trump…making Russia AND China great again.
I wonder what part of Trump wanting to help ZTE plays in all of this.
LMMFAO!
Scared of a little “discovery”, Mueller?!?!?! Good Lord are the Libs desperate!!!! The criminal case they brought for pure PR value, that they never thought would ever be answered. Well guess what??? Whoooopppps, dey it is!!!!!!
“But, but, but, but,” he sputters, “They might be spyyyyyyyyyyyiiiiiiinnnnnggggggg! ”
https://www.yahoo.com/news/mueller-worries-russia-could-court-case-spy-probe-193320299–politics.html
If you say so!!! Lololol!

This seems to be the consensus outside of wingnut welfare as to what happened between Kim Jung-un and Trump. Long story short we gave up a lot and Kim offered up the same thing he’s been offering everybody for 26 years.
How about this from der Leader on NK resort potential? “As an example they have great beaches. You see that whenever they’re exploding their cannons into the ocean. I said, boy, look at that view. Wouldn’t that make a great condo? And I explained, I said, you know, instead of doing that you could have the best hotels in the world right there.”
Maybe in 10 years we can expect NK farmers to follow the lead of the Scots and fly Mexican flags in protest of the Trump/Kim co-prosperity development initiative.
Michael Cohen expected to be arrested any day now. I guess Friday could be a blockbuster day with Manafort going to jail and Trump’s consigliere being arrested.
