Monday Reads for Monday, July 2
Good morning! Here’s to hoping your weekend was as lovely as mine, because I found $20.
Georgia
- Today’s the first day of early voting in the July Republican runoff. But should we ban it?
- Might as well vote though because polls say it’s tied
- It’s also the first weekday of hands-free driving, and you’re all banned.
- A census by the United Way counted 3,000 homeless people in Atlanta, a 14% decline since last year
- The ACLU is suing on behalf of a Macon family whose epileptic son was taken by the state after his parents allowed him to smoke marijuana
- The Baby Braves, Jr continue to lead the NL East. Cast your All-Star Game Ballot and send Markakis for once and Ozzie and Acuña for the first of many times to come. Voting ends on Thursday.
There Be Dragons
- The German Chancellor’s government teeters over the migrant issue. Fortunately, German instability has never become anyone else’s problem.
- Meanwhile, a leftist wins the Mexican presidency for the first time in decades. Meet the new 30s, same as the old 30s.
- You’re going to read a lot about how Collins and Murkowski could derail the Supreme Court nomination, but the truth is that Manchin and Heitkamp are more likely to defect
- Nathan wants y’all to be prepared to splice wires to NASA standards as we get ready for the Space Force. (Editorial comment: SPACE FORCE!)

Ah, that wire splicing technique is one reason why those spacecraft often end up lasting 30 years beyond their designed life!
Here is a neat Agricultural/Industry Survey TVA did of Fannin County Life in the 1930’s. It’s a good read if this link works. http://t10010.eos-intl.net/elibsql17_T10010_Documents/999_6_T29gf.pdf
I saw some other news about that $20 – https://twitter.com/CharlieBHarper/status/1013121653591695361

Mick Mulvaney time as Acting Director of the CFPB expired a little over a week ago and he is no longer allowed to be the Acting Director according to Federal law……and yet he is still in that position. Why?
5 USC 3346
(a) Except in the case of a vacancy caused by sickness, the person serving as an acting officer as described under section 3345 may serve in the office–
(1) for no longer than 210 days beginning on the date the vacancy occurs; or
(2) subject to subsection (b), once a first or second nomination for the office is submitted to the Senate, from the date of such nomination for the period that the nomination is pending in the Senate.
(b)(1) If the first nomination for the office is rejected by the Senate, withdrawn, or returned to the President by the Senate, the person may continue to serve as the acting officer for no more than 210 days after the date of such rejection, withdrawal, or return.
(2) Notwithstanding paragraph (1), if a second nomination for the office is submitted to the Senate after the rejection, withdrawal, or return of the first nomination, the person serving as the acting officer may continue to serve–
(A) until the second nomination is confirmed; or
(B) for no more than 210 days after the second nomination is rejected, withdrawn, or returned.
(c) If a vacancy occurs during an adjournment of the Congress sine die, the 210-day period under subsection (a) shall begin on the date that the Senate first reconvenes.
What, you the “Appointment Police?” Lololol! Who cares?! He’ll be appointed or renewed as long as TGM wants!
You think we’re a country of laws? Wrong. We’re a country run by small cult whose leader does not play by any rules and whose followers live by a code of victimhood caused by immigrants from s…hole countries. Its a cult where an American war hero is bad but Kim Jong Un is good; where our military are killers but the KGB is good. Where….I could go on but why bother?
Sea Kelp…Truly, my friend. I mean, really…
You win the internet today. Don’t forget immigrants are all sex slavers and they are coming to take their jobs. What do Republicans do for a living?
“Companies announced $433.6 billion in share repurchases during the period, nearly doubling the previous record of $242.1 billion in the first quarter…”
“”Corporate cash is going to find a home, and it’s either going to be in buybacks, dividends or M&A activity. What it’s not going to be is in capex..” And Raises. Bonuses sure, raises, nope.
“So while companies are likely to continue to prop up the market by returning cash to shareholders, it comes against a backdrop of concern that there simply may be no better place to put money amid the trade uncertainty.”

I have used heat-shrink splice connectors for years. The splice is stronger than the wire, insulated better, and takes much less time than the NASA standard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wh5gM8GM70
But of course, the government always does it better.
Looks OK for stranded wire, maybe not for solid core. Also seems like it would be easy to overheat. And you can’t do it with a soldering iron/gun.
Pretty nice if you need an insulated connection though.
The Survivalist Libertarian welder, lumberjack, and part time cow herder (AKA the Baby Bro) has forced me to watch Fox News. Every. Hour. Of. The. Day.
On the upside I got to see our very own LaDawn Jones tonight.
Surprised I missed that segment. I’ve been visiting with an elderly aunt (pushing the century mark) who seemingly also gets one channel. We gave her foam bricks to toss at the occasional libs on Fox years ago. I’m sure LaDawn would have gotten one if my aunt was both awake and wearing her hearing aids at the time.
I’ve been doing my part for the disloyal opposition by making sure Sheldon Adelson doesn’t get to wet his beak in my poker take.
Trump Derangement Syndrome intensifies. Good riddance!

It started with your shoes, then your water. Now the TSA wants your snacks.
Experienced this myself this past weekend. Who knew that explosives resembled nuts and berries? Also my second tour through the special search room. I don’t even resemble Paul Broun.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/traveling-via-air-expect-to-remove-your-snacks-and-place-them-in-a-bin/2018/06/29/ea0bede2-796c-11e8-aeee-4d04c8ac6158_story.html
my second tour through the special search room
What, did you say “I’ve got your snack right here”?
Nah, they “randomly” pick you out of the line and swab your hands and arms. Then they run the swabs through a machine and I’ve failed the swab test both times. They will not reveal what substances they are testing for and I’ve read all sorts of ideas on the net if you can imagine that. It could be that both times I have stopped at Waffle House on the way to the airport to fill up with a no-carb, high-nitrate filled omelette. I’m now swearing off bacon before flying.
Maybe the libs will ban the TSA too. Ban the police and the military too. All are racist institutions designed by the man to keep folks of color down. Maxine for president. Bill Ayers VP.
Is this a hint that you want to discuss the idea of banning ICE?
Or are you just looking for (inventing?) a reason to be pissed off?
Can’t speak for Down, here but by all means you and the OtherLibs keep talking about banning ICE. Not just here, but coffee shops, meeting rooms, maybe even football stadiums. The more y’all vomit nonsense the bigger percentage your margin of loss will be!
Glad to see that you are safe and warm in the safe space of not thinking for yourself.
I happen to agree that the whole idea of abolishing ICE doesn’t make any sense from a policy or political perspective. You can either change the immigration law, or change enforcement priorities. Restructuring ICE back into another department won’t change either of those things. Because it’s all a reaction to the inhumanity of the enforcement priorities (we need to fully prosecute), the discussion should be on enforcement priorities (focus 1st on violent criminals, including MS13 (since they are often used as a political point of reference)). I.e. Why shouldn’t we eradicate MS13 before we eradicate the spirits of helpless children?
Yeah, it’s a matter of enforcement priorities.
And I understand that #abolishice is primarily rhetoric intended to capture the anger at the current admin’s enforcement priorities, I don’t think it helps politically. Swing voters won’t like it. Let me instead suggest #”WarmTheICE or #ICEontherocks or #ChillOutICE
In a way, the differences mirror the Evans v. Abrams strategies. Not that GA is very representative of the entire U.S….
I’m thinking that downthemiddleoftherightedgeoftheflatearth is just suffering from projection ejaculation.
Keep eating those Cheetos, Will…Lol!
If you mean that s/he hates Dems because s/he assumes that all Dem policies and priorities are based on an assumption that all Repub policies and priorities are racist, because in fact s/he won’t confront the realities of hate that are in fact embedded in his/her own political positions, and perhaps embedded in his/her soul, then I have to say, based on the constant race-baiting and race-based assumptions, that is a distinct possibility.
Psssssst….(you forgot Nazi and now y’alls latest….wait for it. A “cult!!!!”) LMAO!
For my friends on “the right”: Why is abolishing the IRS OK but abolishing ICE not even worth considering?
More Christian bashing. Bring it on! Real Americans ain’t putting up with it anymore!
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.thedailybeast.com/amy-coney-barrett-the-trump-supreme-court-pick-wholl-troll-liberals-the-hardest
Are you okay with a cult member being on the supreme court? Let’s not forget the supreme court itself said that religious litmus tests are okay. Her cult even has “handmaids”. You can’t make this stuff up.
Bring it on! I hope TGM picks her purely out of spite. To accelerate your Side’s Slide into political irrelevance. Ohhhhhh, don’t you have a cabinet member you can bully and threaten in a restaurant somewhere?! Real Americans are watching your crap!!
You wish. Why has the GOP been continually losing special elections if everything is so great for them? Even you don’t believe the nonsense you post.
Lololol! You want to talk about GOP losing after the absolute defiling you dilweeds took last week courtesy of the Supreme Court!?!?! LMMFAO!!! A “Clockwork Orange” was more gentle!
Of course. I guess you’re looking for that musket to fight the civil war tomorrow. Don’t eat the cornmeal mush though grandpa.
Amy Coney Barrett is absolutely Roman Catholic. As is almost always the case, you don’t have the remotest clue as to what you speak. You have to be a troll.
She is a member of People of Praise which according to Ellyn has no affiliation with the Catholic Church.
Hi, Actual Catholic here. No one is called a handmaiden
Barret belongs to a group that has no religious affiliation besides being Christian in addition to be Catholic.
https://peopleofpraise.org/missionary/
She’s not a regular Catholic. She’s in a weird offshoot like Mel Gibson.
This sounds really weird to me:
Some of the group’s practices would surprise many faithful Catholics. Members of the group swear a lifelong oath of loyalty, called a covenant, to one another, and are assigned and are accountable to a personal adviser, called a “head” for men and a “handmaid” for women. The group teaches that husbands are the heads of their wives and should take authority over the family.
Current and former members say that the heads and handmaids give direction on important decisions, including whom to date or marry, where to live, whether to take a job or buy a home, and how to raise children.
Again, People of Praise is not a Catholic affiliated group. It has extremely conservative leaning in charismatic and evangelical foundations. It has Catholic, Lutheran, Methodists, Pentecostals and Angelicins in its group.
Aim your ire at the correct cult please.
WEll, that is what I said. She’s not a regular Catholic as in she’s not a Roman Catholic. Maybe she will answer these questions if she is nominated.
If you are Catholic you are Catholic. Their is no little subsets. You are Catholic. You have religious orders which are part of a religious institute and independent communities, like Carmelites, Jesuits, etc.. You can have movements, like Catholic Tradionalists or the Catholic Worker Movement. But we don’t have sects Catholic is Catholic, unless you use it with a little ‘c’.
I would not say Gorsuch was Catholic. He apparently grew up Catholic but no longer attends Mass. Whether he officially got confirmed as an Episcopalian I don’t know.

Another pedophile scandal for the GOP. This time with Jim Jordan. Or maybe more of sexual abuse that was going on since they were at Ohio State and probably over 18.
