Morning Reads for Tuesday, July 24, Now With 100% More Runoff Day Open Thread
It’s time for the runoff! The biggies are the GOP gubernatorial primary and the Dem runoff for CD 6. But wait – there’s more!
- Who, exactly, is Rep. Jason Spencer?
- The Economist examines what might be next for Democrats under Trump.
- For the first time in six years, Georgia has transcended the bottom 10 in the annual Kids Count rankings.
- The More You Know: The Clermont Hotel is entirely separate from the Clermont Lounge (cc: Clay Tippins). Here’s a look inside the redeveloped hotel (because cameras aren’t allowed in the Lounge).
- The latest on any chance of re-opening the Amtrak line along the Gulf Coast. Spoiler alert: the governors of Alabama and Mississippi are the reason for the present derailment.
- Trump wants to rescind the security clearances of former national security officials (who no longer have security clearance).
Enjoy the open thread; don’t make me come in there.

444 words about the Democratic runoff.
That’s actually a little sad. It kinda breaks my heart that people vote based on the sound of a name or an arbitrary rule like ‘ don’t vote for anyone who calls me”. At that point you are better off not voting at all, at least you won’t be contributing to a possible BIG MISTAKE.
How big government of the Administration. In the latest addition trade wars are easy to win, we the tax payers get to pay out $12 Billion to help farmers (I’m pro farmer so don’t even go there) who were ‘hurt’ by the Administration to begin with…

FDR used these tools because we were in the Great Depression. We’ve had a decade of economic expansion and he’s now using these tools to plug the self-imposed holes in a sinking ship. The government’s power of the purse should be used to stabilize failing markets, not muck up functioning efficient markets.
Trump’s only saving grace is that his legion of sycophants don’t understand capital markets.
Typical Trump. Have somebody else bail him out of his self inflicted wounds.
These are not the actions of a conservative.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/24/us/politics/farmers-aid-trade-war.html
“The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that it would provide up to $12 billion in emergency relief for farmers hurt by the president’s trade war, moving to blunt the financial damage to American agriculture and the political fallout for Republicans as the consequences of President Trump’s protectionist policies roll through the economy.”
Trump’s own voters are going on welfare. How ironic is that?
Just came from voting. Poll workers report very light turnout today at my precinct in Oconee, although early voting was higher than expected. Cagle had zero signs up, Kemp only two. Both efforts seem unnatural.
Again I will mention that barring a huge upset in November a single-digit percentage of Georgia voters will be voting in the next governor under our current system.
RCP mentions a poll on the gop runoff from Trafalgar that seems screwy in that half of their sample is 65+. More than 20 percent is 75+. M/F split with slight edge to M. Can these breakdowns be legit?
They had Kemp up 59-41.
If I had an edit button I wouldn’t have to make another post to give the cross-tabs.

The edit button is now working.
I sure want Kemp to win, but 60-40? I’ll surely not complain but that seems just huge.
Of course the Trump endorsement could be responsible for this lead.
Sad that the states of Alabama and Mississippi won’t pony up for Gulf coast passenger rail service, but that’s their right. One possible solution would be for the other states to pay for track repairs and maintenance in those states (something like 150 miles), start running the trains and have them simply pass through without making station stops, including Mobile. Like in the old Cold War days when trains traveled to Berlin through East Germany. Window shades down, straight on through, with East German soldiers prowling the train.
Wow big win in the 9th. http://cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/opinions/2018/07/24/12-17808.pdf I didn’t even think they read the constitution out there.
I never knew The Clermont Hotel as anything but a flop house. I guess the line of demarcation in Poncey/Highland is more blurred these days but it’s hard for me to forget the images of those who were “down on Ponce”. The Biltmore on the other hand I went to in its near death throes and recently to a wedding reception. Just wow.
This quote by James Madison seems to sum up the Governor’s race. “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm.”
I have been waiting for some besides me not note the date…
We HAVE EDIT. AND SPELL CHECK!!!!!!
The previous plugin was incompatible with new version of WordPress, according to our wonderful IT guy. Hopefully this new version will suit y’all fine.

Thank you!

President Trump to VWF on the subject of tariffs.
Thank you Lawton and GaPol crew for fixing the edit function. Now if I start getting follow-up comment notifications, it will be a total success as far as I’m concerned. 🙂
Did you get a verification email after you clicked on the “Notify me…” when you made your first comment?
Nope, DD, didn’t get anything. I am clicking the “Notify me of follow-up comments” and even started checking both that and the “new posts” one. But not getting any email from GaPol at all.
GP don’t write, don’t call, don’t send me no flowers….. Can you look behind the site and see what’s going on with my functionality?
2 Things:
Thanks.
Someone comment on this. I want to check out the subscribe to comments issues.
Oh, you are asking for trouble…
Thank you.
So, it worked for me… Maybe I followed the instructions to verify I wanted to follow the comments correctly?
As for trouble… I do control the usernames… someone could end up with the new username of “I am Jason Spencer’s Left Buttcheek” if they want to play.
The visual of that display will be forever haunting.
Ok
This is over. This has to be beyond embarrassing for Casey.
For anyone who ever wants to run for office take note. This is what happens when you think you deserve a seat because you waited your turn and you play things safe. Say what you will about Kemp’s campaign. He did not play it safe.
I completely misread the lasting reaction to the Tippins tapes. Should have remembered that people really don’t want to see how their sausage is made.
