Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Responds to Rep. Spencer’s Resignation
The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) today issued the following statement in response to the resignation of State Representative Jason Spencer (R-Woodbine) from the Georgia House of Representatives effective July 31, 2018:
“The leadership of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), the Georgia House Democratic Caucus and the Georgia Senate Democratic Caucus this morning agreed that it would be best to cancel the joint press conference that was previously scheduled for today at 11 a.m. This cancellation is due to Rep. Spencer’s resignation from the Georgia House of Representatives, which he sent to House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) via email just before midnight last night.
“The leadership and members of the GLBC would like to thank the House Democratic Caucus and the Senate Democratic Caucus for a great collaborative effort in addressing a serious issue that impacted not only the citizens of House District 180, but also the citizens across this great state of Georgia. The GLBC would like to also thank the Governor’s Office and the Speaker’s Office for responding to Rep. Spencer’s offensive comments and behavior.”
State Senator Lester Jackson (D-Savannah), Chairman of the GLBC, added: “As the Chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, I urge my General Assembly colleagues to welcome Rep. Spencer’s resignation and let serve as a warning that statements of hate and offensive behavior will not be tolerated in the future by elected officials, or they will face a similar outcome to their political future. Additionally, I would like to point out the poor judgment used by Showtime producers for airing Rep. Spencer’s racist comments and offensive behavior in Sacha Baron Cohen’s show ‘Who is America?’ on Sunday night.”
Rep. William Boddie (D-East Point), Communications Chair of the GLBC, added: “I’m glad that Rep. Spencer did the right thing and submitted his resignation to Speaker Ralston late last night. It’s time for the Georgia General Assembly to move on from this disturbing incident and get back to working diligently on behalf of all Georgians.”

Everything that happened to Roseanne Barr should now happen to Sacha Baron Cohen. If the magic word is that offensive, it doesn’t matter whose mouth it is coming out of.
Except Sacha Baron Cohen didn’t say it….
Showtime could have bleeped it out.
Agreed! Borat just punked a true idiot!
If that was directed at me in a negative way, read it again. Showtime did nothing wrong. The pol was a genuine idiot and deserves to be gone.
Roseanne got fired for being a chronic pain in the ass to her employers. Her tweet that got her booted wasn’t racist, just mean-spirited and not funny.
Spencer was an embarrassing buffoon on stage while drawing a salary from the people of the state. He should be pitied for the extent of his dimness.
Did you read her tweet?
If you didn’t recognize the racism, you need to become better informed.
None of her lame excuses or ignorance do anything to excuse it.
If comparing Valerie Jarrett to an ape isn’t racist, one of us has a misconception of the concept.
You guys are free to use whatever definition you want. I’ll stick to what the dictionaries say:
“1. Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.
1.1 The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.”
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/racism
And the Anti-Defamation League:
“Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics.”
https://www.adl.org/racism
I understand that racism is a complex idea and that dictionary definitions can’t encompass every instance of racial behavior, but even after re-reading Roseanne’s tweet I don’t think it was racist, just vulgar and offensive and, as I wrote earlier, not funny.
I see where last week Roseanne offered (screamed, really) the weak excuse “I thought the bitch was white.” Still vulgar, but to me at least, kinda funny and still not racist in intent or execution.
Ignoring the movie ape reference for the moment, are either of you upset that Barr also mentioned the Muslim Brotherhood? Do you believe that was a racist jab at Jarrett too? Or was it merely a lame attempt to draw humor from a Muslim ‘other’?
I liked Jarrett’s response to Barr appearing on Fox tomorrow night: “Less is more, don’t you think? There are so many issues that are more important.”
There sure are.
You explanation influenced my opinion.
I also think that there are far other bigger issues than Roseanne, but here we have opportunity to dialogue and open minds on issues that go to broad social issues. And to not confront the problems you see is to enable. And to enable is to be complicit. So silence in the face of such an error is not an option.
The reference to the Muslim Brotherhood was racist because it stated, to reference your definitions “that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics.”
The tweet said that “If Muslim Brotherhood … had a baby…”
You could argue that there is some sort of political reference in there, except for every other word in the tweet. And if you want to be so bold as to say that she intended to praise Jarrett, or it was a morally neutral statement about having a baby, you go ahead and pretend you can intellectualize away the obvious, and allow that BS to work in the world.
How is ‘joking’ that Valerie Jarrett is the offspring of an ape not indicating she is of an inferior race?
Wow!

Sorry for wrong location.
I’m sorry but I got to laugh at a conservative saying that when the first thing conservatives whine about is people having too many children especially POC having too many children.
No wonder the libs need illegal immigration and no borders. They are aborting millions of their supporters. They don’t don’t want anyone to breed to save the planet. They don’t even want any of us to drive a truck because of the carbon footprint…. I guess it is hard for gay folks to reproduce unless they adopt…not sure what transgenders do or want…too complicated I guess…Libs generally are not fans of family values and ridicule them… I guess to find a few more supporters clueless enough to vote for them they have to open up the borders to anyone. Is this the motivation?
OMFG, you finally figured it all out!
That post may be the stupidest and mean-spirited thing you’ve said.
And that actually means something.
OTOH, I finally figured out the entire Repub strategy: Grasp at the most extreme beliefs of some non-representative individuals— or just make up some extreme beliefs— then without any concern for logic or ethics, smear whoever you are running against with those false beliefs.
Who cares about Cristian values like telling the truth (some Commandment or other)?
You have a problem DTM. Get help.
This has been the strategy for a long time. Goes back to Newt Gingrich, Grover Norquist, and Hillarycare. Limbaugh and those who followed have striven to make every issue, real or invented, a life or death struggle, with the fate of your daughters hanging in the balance.
Now that they have created this monster they can’t even control it themselves.
I don’t think Saturday Night Live could do a satire of a Trumpist any better than this screed. My first thought was an appeal to the moderators to get this site back under some semblance of order. My next was to come back with the Billy Madison debate judge quote. My next after that was that this person is doing more harm to the Trumpists with his ignorant rants than George Will’s columns in the Washington Post. Thank you for the morning laugh.
Darn, looks like Trump just got a ton of concessions from the EU and NO TRADE WAR! Hmmm. I thought the left was saying this was the end of the world…again…for the 10th time this week! I wonder if CNN or MSNBC will even bother to comment. Isnt this good news? Seems wonderful for the US and EU. Can a good liberal tell me something horrible about this?
Looks like someone discovered that tariffs are a tax and there’s not enough money to buy off farmers, so the EU is perfectly fine.
It’s trade war de-escalation so we can talk without any significantly one-sided concessions:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/trump-juncker-tout-deal-pulling-back-from-us-eu-trade-war/ar-BBL3ylh?ocid=spartanntp
Here’s something horrible about it. The President and supporters so ill-informed that not increasing damage is good news. Other types of Trump good news….thousands of new coal-mining jobs….The return of the remains of 200 from Korea.
Even the Weekly Standard isn’t inpressed:
https://www.weeklystandard.com/haley-byrd/donald-trump-made-a-trade-deal-with-jean-claude-juncker-and-the-european-union-heres-what-it-actually-means
It’s all talk. And it’s disturbing that yet again we see Trump abusing the office by unilaterally imposing tariffs supposedly based on national security reasons but then offering to negotiate those tariffs based on trade. Illegal, and Congress does nothing.
.
Fascism isn’t on the horizon, it’s knocking at the door.
Got a link, pal?
How am I supposed to sing along with many of my favorite songs if I can’t use the n-word?
As a tiebreaker….
Where was Jody Hice on Fourth of July 2018?
Are you dullards saying this reduction in tariffs, which are indeed taxes, is NOT GOOD?! So why don’t you thank Trump for getting this done? Why didn’t Obama do at least SOMETHING about this other than voting “PRESENT” as he so often did as president? Looks like Trump’s RESET button with the EU actually worked for eveyrone. AND we are teaming up together against the biggest abuser China. Uh, do any of wizards think China has been abusing the trade situation and stealing techknology and intellectual property rights for 40 years? Can you guys quit sniveling sniveling about Russia when the liberals and deep state were the abusers when the real global threat is China. Can any of your geniuses tell me what Obama did to address China? And while you’re at it, what did he do against Russia? All of the so called Russian monkey business in our elections was done UNDER HIS WATCH? AND HE TOLD FOLKS TO STAND DOWN AND NOT DO A DAMN THING! WHY? So isn’t it nice have a leader that will not only stand up to a lying press, an abusive FBI, China, Russia, the EU, NATO and the UN all at the same time and not even blink? Isnt that called leadership? Or is sitting around voting PRESENT and doing nothing good leadership to you?! Do you think maybe that is why Trump won and the Hildabeast got hammered?
dtm, if you’ve got information that tariffs are being reduced, let’s see a link. Everything I am reading says that they have agreed to talk about maybe reducing the tariffs-THAT TRUMP CREATED. And by doing even that little bit he is admitting that he broke the law by imposing trade tariffs without Congress’ approval.
And, as has been pointed out to you before, Trump threw out many Russian ‘diplomats’ and seized some of their properties, not to mention signed the Magnitsky Act which is what has got Putin all bothered to begin with.
Pay attention!
Of course I meant to say that it was Obama who threw out those diplomats and signed the Magnitsky Act.
I’m not so used to typing “Obama’ much anymore.
