Every time I hear about the Space Force, I flash back to that movie “Star Troopers” in which the earth is invaded by giant bugs.
It sounds like Pence, et al are afraid to tell the Donald it is a dumb idea and violates numerous treaties.

Georgia Power said it’ll absorb the $1.1 billion Vogtle increase. It’s been reported it will be selling bonds to raise some of that cash. Those bonds will have higher interest since Moody’s no longer rates Georgia Power a blue chip investment. Anybody know how the interest on those bonds would figure into rate-making?

The expense is going to reduce Georgia Power’s tax payments even if interest on the bonds isn’t ultimately paid by ratepayers. Ratepayers will also be paying more to cover higher interest on other Georgia Power borrowing, but hey, that shouldn’t factor into the cost of the plant to ratepayers, should it?

Georgia is No.1 in business for a reason. MAGA.
Ultimately, it’s the PSC that will determine the rates that GA Power can charge, based upon GA Power’s representations of its finances, statutory limits on profits, etc.
So if GA Power makes less money because of the higher interest payments, they could certainly ask the PSC (again) to raise rates to cover the expense. The PSC has been able to focus on the Vogtle costs, though, and may be reluctant to let GA Power pass anything on soecifically for that. But if the interest costs on the bonds can be hidden (I mean subsumed) within the general budget….they may feel that’s politically palatable to pass along those costs.
So you think they should abandon the nuke plant? Hardly. And they are absorbing this. Are you whining thinking us rate payers should do it directly? We will indirectly…

So- the only factor you left out was obviously safety. Which is why so many- citizens, regulators, companies- have opted against nuclear over the decades.
I personally believe that there will be tech improvements that will make nuclear safer, with safer waste production and management as well. At some point. At least keep up the investments in
R&D.

Good article. Some pretty interesting points. These kids are not spend thrift fools like many of their parents. They have seen their parents struggle in the great recession. They have not even had a strong economy and job market to enjoy until now.
They have had to listen and live through mostly inept politicians that just talk and do nothing and that appears to be changing.
They don’t seem to be that interested in a huge car and a huge house they cant afford. Smart. Very different from many of their parents…Most don’t see race as an issue which is marvelous. Maybe the folks that scream racist racist and gin up that hatred every election cycle will be told to shut the F up. That would be marvelous…
They may not all play football but soccer seems pretty big.. They all may not join the Marine Corp but probably don’t hate the military and call them baby killers like some of their radical parents.
They probably are not all flaming radicals and snowflakes thank God. Maybe they are looking for some honesty and common sense. If they can get through college and not be indoctrinated into bitter haters and can think for themselves, we all be in better place in a few years.

Photo ID? Not for me. But the intent of the Georgia legislation as filed was clearly partisan by making is easier for Republicans and harder for Democrats to vote. Despite it being brought to attention as illegal, the legislation included a poll tax. Dozens of Georgia counties did not even one location where a state issued photo ID could be obtained, an obvious barrier to obtaining one.

At that point, presumably no poll worker is going to deny you a ballot if you changed your hair color since your last photo, or grown a mustache, or gotten a botox treatment, or started wearing glasses. The only realistic scenario where a poll worker would deny you a ballot is if you were Hispanic looking or black and showed up pretending to be a white person (or vice versa), which there is no evidence of ever happening except in the minds of paranoid partisans trying anything at all that might salvage an electoral victory since the policies aren’t getting it done.

Or you can pay for things with cash which require no ID and many employers don’t even pay people with checks anymore. They use pay cards.

I’m going to be honest, DTM. Andrew, others, have named plenty of policies that Dems or other progressives put forward that captures that political position’s vision on advancing America. They do not hate America, or think it sucks, just because they think it can be improved. In fact, for every policy of the Repubs, there is a competing Dem policy. Tax cuts? Dems have a package. Immigration reform? Dems have a package. Jobs readiness and business growth? Dems have a package. Health care? Dems have a package.
But the real issue is that no matter what the policy is, you won’t like it, because it doesn’t fit in with what you believe to be true. So Dems could say they are cutting taxes to truly small businesses or start-ups and you would say they’re increasing taxes on the multinationals. (To be fair, many Dems would prefer raising the rates on the top bracket of income tax. But that won’t be taking my money, or probably yours, and much like Eiger loved the tax cut bc it put money in his pocket- irrespective of other possible consequences- I would say drop the taxes on the middle class first and foremost, not drop the rate on the highest bracket.) But the thing is you’d say they want to raise taxes and “take your money” regardless. The nuances, the ACTUAL policy, with all its complexities, has no meaning to you.
So that makes it kind of useless to bother to say the same things over and over to you or Noway, or dive into complexities. That’s not what you guys are into. Y’all into a Tastes Great, Less Filling shouting match that doesn’t have depth or dialogue.

I have listened to the “progressive” ideas Andrew. They just don’t work. Never have. Virtually anywhere on the planet. We do have a mix of socialism in our economy. Progressive tax rates, the social safety nets….I think they make sense. Its simply the scale and degree I disagree with. When one party is willing to take 50% or more of someone’s work and efforts, that is a form of slavery or indentured servitude that is abusive. I guess we disagree.

Well, are you telling the truth then? Because when I went I had to have 7 pieces of paper to “prove” who I was. I seriously doubt you are telling the truth then.
That’s actually a pretty good example, (except that operating your car without a license is against the law, so you’ll get a ticket for that.) But if you have a license but left it at home you’ll probably have to take it down and show it to a judge at some point. And when you vote, if you don’t have ID, you can still get a provisional ballot, and you’ll probably have to go down and show it to someone for your vote to count.
The whole point being, B, is that we gotta show ID for almost everything. Voting should be no different.
But that’s a false statement. You don’t have to show your ID when you go to an ATM. I don’t have to show a picture ID when I buy something on Amazon, or go to a restaurant. But even so, those are private transactions- a company can implement pretty much any ID requirements they want.

But voting is a right, and we should be very careful about restricting that right. Driving is not a right, and the only reason you have to show an ID for that is because you have to pass a test to operate that machinery and the license is the proof that you passed that test.

You are not subject to the real ID law that was passed under George W. Bush? This was enacted in GA in 2011. Check it out. Years ago you could go and just renew your license like that but not anymore. So either you are exempt somehow or you are not telling the truth.

Everybody is complaining about this law and the crap they have to do to renew and it comes into the whole driver’s license to vote thing too. I posted the link to the requirements for a driver’s license but apparently you did not read it. It goes straight to the Georgia Department of Driver Services. And if you don’t have a birth certificate you have to pay to get one. You have to pay to get a certified copy of your marriage license. This all adds up to some money.
If you already have the “secure” license, you can renew easily, even online. But the first time you get a license, like moving here from out of state, or any other circumstance where you don’t already have the ‘secure’ license, you have to go through all those hoops.

I have had a driver’s license here in GA since 1989. When I went to renew it in 2012 I had to have all the paperwork. What the DDS worker told me is that you are only allowed to renew your driver’s license one time and then the next time you renew it, you have to bring all the paperwork in again.
I also thought it was not just about when you renewed, but what the foundational documents were. May not be right about that, but if you obtained initial license with a passport as ID proof, that may have been treated differently if you originally used a birth certificate. Not entirely sure.
But getting a license is not as easy as all that all the time. It’s the birth certificate (and/or marriage certificate) that can be the most difficult part. The elderly, disabled, and the indigent have the most problems navigating the systems and costs of vital records. So there is a practical cost and hurdle to getting an ID. There are some nonprofits that can give limited assistance to helping folks get through problems (like can you even get a 1940’s birth certificate from here or there?).
If the Sec’y of State provided that assistance as part of its services to help ppl register and vote, that would seem to be the best way to dispel charges of bias. But all I remember seeing is some sort of travelling van that helped some folks register, but not obtain ID. Did the SoS ever do anything else?
