This morning, Governor Nathan Deal announced that he has appointed Georgia’s Solicitor General Sarah Hawkins Warren to fill the vacancy of Justice Britt Grant, who was recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate to join the 11th Circuit Court. From the Governor’s press release:
Warren currently serves as the solicitor general in the Office of the Georgia Attorney General. She previously worked as the deputy solicitor general and as special counsel for water litigation in the Georgia Attorney General’s Office. Warren was also a partner with Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Washington, D.C. She clerked for the Honorable Richard J. Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and for Chief Judge J.L. Edmondson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. Warren earned bachelor’s degrees, magna cum laude, in Public Policy and Spanish from Duke University and a law degree, magna cum laude, from the Duke University School of Law. She and her husband, Blaise, have two children and reside in Atlanta.
Governor Deal still has at least one appointment to make to Georgia’s highest Court. Chief Justice Harris Hines is retiring, and the Governor recently received a list of potential nominees to replace him. Warren was among those nominated.
The path to her nomination should be noted. The position of Solicitor General was created by former Attorney General Sam Olens. The first Solicitor General was Nels Peterson, now serving on Georgia’s Supreme Court. Britt Grant succeeded Peterson. She then joined the Supreme Court before getting tapped to join the 11th. Sarah Hawkins Warren makes 3 for 3 of Georgia’s Solicitor Generals being appointed to Georgia’s Supreme Court.
