Morning Reads for Tuesday, August 28
Good morning! There are fewer reads today; several of them are long-form pieces that I think merit your time.
- Senators Isakson and Perdue encouraged their colleagues to not rush to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in honor of Senator John McCain.
- The Clermont Hotel is open for business, and I can’t wait to stay there.
- Françoise Gilot abandoned studying law for art. She was Picasso’s muse and lover for nearly 10 years (she later married Dr. Jonas Salk), and she has a new book of sketches from their travels in the 1970s and early 1980s.
- It’s bad enough we have to worry about the robots achieving sentience. City life is making animals smarter, too.
- Long Read #1, from Outside Magazine: Utah is the second-dryest state in the United States, and it is also home to the fastest-growing metropolitan area in America. Is there enough water in the Colorado River to support an area where developers are trying “to establish a city where no city should be?”
- Long Read #2, from BuzzFeed News: An examination of the horror and depravity that befell children at a Catholic orphanage in Vermont. This is a wrenching read.

A 5 (five) mill tax hike…
http://www.wtoc.com/story/38972906/wayne-county-board-approves-major-tax-increase
Tough read on the Catholic orphanage, reminiscent of the Magdalene laundries. It’s the same old song–continuing charges of abuse by priests and nuns who have a poisonous view of their duties and responsibilities, followed by cover-ups by the church hierarchy. Francis just went to Ireland and offended many by pleading for forgiveness for church insiders without addressing what he intends to do to expose their crimes. People are calling for a new pope but imo he’d be more likely to be a caretaker than a reformer. It’s a tough time to be a Catholic.
I remember when the many original 1990’s investigations (on which the St Joseph story has it’s roots) was happening. People were basically looking into the entire government funded orphanage system of the 1920’s to the 1950’s. The majority of the orphanages in New England and the Midwest were through Catholic programs. One orphanage investigated was run in Iowa by a Lutheran affiliated organization. Years later doing family tree research I came across some distant branches of my father’s German side that had children placed there in 1934 after their mother died and they couldn’t locate dad. It was through this that I found the newspaper reports from the late 1990’s. They are disturbing in what was mentioned and implied, which left your imagination to fill in the scariest details. People forget that 50 or so years ago, abuse was not discussed or generally acknowledge by any agency in a position of care or enforcement of children. Being able to strike your own child was not against the law. Even as late as the early 1980’s, in some states teachers or hospitals did have the legal levers in place to require reporting child abuse. These stories are even more horrific because they are not outliers of their time.
Alright. Heading out to Myrtle’s Squat and Gobble with my buds. Manila folder in hand with Drew’s comments all in black and white. BJ’s, too. A few of Matt’s. More hysteria…
https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2018/08/27/maga-trump-hat-taken/
It’s a crooked investigation and that has been known for a year and a half. When more of the evidence is heard, maybe Mueller can investigate his own office…if anyone is still there that has not already been fired…Sad isn’t it? The abuse of power is stunning. And going on strong.
You’re really really dumb. It’s crazy that someone can be that far gone, but you’ve managed it. I feel sorry for your mother.
I am dumb. Ouch. If you want a second opinion, I might be stinky too… If you want to be ugly and biting, get Andrew and Matt! I can handle all.
Uh, why have so many FBI figures been fired or reassigned if they were so honest? Why use a fake, unverified dossier to sky on your opponent and then use the same thing to try and frame Trump?
Lastly, please let me know how Trump colluded on anything. Since Mueller has found nothing it might be interesting to see what YOU come up with. Gotcha!
Wait is this BJ back again?! Hi BJ! What does BJ stand for?!
But, but, but whatabout?
Trump is a mob figure. Simeon Mogilevich is the man behind the man behind the man behind the presidency. Watch when his name starts popping up. Trumps paranoid tweets will reach an all time fever pitch. It’s why they hate Mueller. He knows how to tackle organized crime. The information is all easily accessible. The Russian mob rolled up the Italians in the 90’s-2000’s in NY. You’re being hustled and swindled and I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t affect me and mine as well. This is going to end badly.
He’s mentioned in Manafort’s documents for trial 2 next month.
Even more interesting is the guy who was after Mogilevich in the DOJ a decade ago is Bruce Ohr.
Which makes me ask… Why are the GOP lead justice and intelligence committees going after or is trying discredit the top law enforcement official of the last 20 years who hunted Russian spies, the DOJ lead who indicted Russian Mafia members, the deputy AG in charge of trying to prosecute Russian gang members during the Bush administration and the FBI agent in charge of an office in a region that investigated Russian mafia in the 2000’s -Russians who had ties to Putin?
Easy because they have tried to frame Trump. It is very easy to see if you want to look at the evidence. Sure the guy has done some good work. So did Nixon. This investigation stinks to high heaven. Collusion, focus…how has Trump colluded? Not a thing. How much collusion is there in the FBI to spy and entrap Trump? Why all the firings? Not even close to the end of us. Just read a little.
I like to point out I didn’t mention Trump. I mentioned RUSSIANS.
Trump is using his office to cover up decades of criminal money laundering for the mob. Shit, his father and grandfather laundered money for the mob going back to the days of Capone, Lansky, Luciano, etc. The only reason the Russians are involved is because of organized crime. They took over from the Italians. Putin is the least of the concerns here. THAT is what scares Trump. He knows his shady ass is going to be exposed in this investigation beyond the allegations of collusion. Whether or not you like it, it’s coming.
I feel real bad for those diving cats Teri. Makes me think how panthers adapted to the mountains here but in no time at all we killed all but 200, mostly with cars. Seems like panthers are probably pretty smart, but if flexibility is the measure of intelligence, like your article says, maybe they’re not as smart as magpies.
And y’all can treat me like a sasquatch hunter for this next one if you want to: I don’t care what the DNR says I’ve seen a panther up in North Georgia that had obviously been struck by a car. Panthers are real!
Hmmm, GNP growth may be 4.6% this quarter. Wonder how that is possible when we were told that 2% was the new normal. Maybe lower taxes, less regulaton, a few more dollars in your pockes and not having a target on your rear end as if you are a walking ATM for the government might actually work?
Does anyone see anything NOT TO LIKE with what is going on? Does anyone want to point any policy whatsoever that Trump has passed or is focusing on that is not geared for making America stronger?
I do not want a trade war and agree tariffs are nothing more than tax increases, but I counter that adding tariffs on China or anywhere else is simply a bargaining chip to get all tariffs reduced.
That certainly appears that way with Mexico, the EU, Canadian representatives who are in for talks today. China later…but they import 10x more here than we export there, so we will win that one too.
It is nice to have someone that understands the situation in charge for a change.
Now what is Stormy doing today? Is Mueller trying to entrap anyone else today? Who is he squeezing?
How about the testimony today behind closed doors that is showing folks how corrupt the FBI was during the entire investigation? It never was about collusion was it?
I see plenty not to like, but what I like least is this administration’s effort to destabilize the international organizations and liberal (in the academic sense) institutions that have allowed the United States to lead the world in a somewhat unified way with a minimum of violence. I lived first-hand Obama’s Pacific strategy, and believe that we were on the right track in convincing those partner-nations of America’s commitment to their long-term economic and physical security and independence, something they’ll lack if they’re drawn in as Chinese magnet-states. The withdrawal of the United States from TPP reflects a lack of interest in Pacific security. But that’s not all.
http://www.afsa.org/list-ambassadorial-appointments
This is a list of vacant ambassadorial posts. The United State’s diplomatic power has been key to our success for decades, it’s at least as significant as our military when it comes to ensuring our security. The administration would rather tweet out foreign policy than allow career diplomats to continue doing what they’ve done with their expertise since the Marshall Plan. One of Trump’s lines is that “The rest of the world isn’t laughing at us anymore” but that’s a joke in itself, because Angela Merkel had to explain 11 times that the US can’t deal with Germany independently of the EU (any junior foreign service officer would know that) and Shinzo Abe had to suffer listening to Trump rant about Pearl Harbor. If that’s not something to laugh about then I don’t know what is.
Trump attacking tech–
My first guess is that he’s doing this because he feels his media presence diminishing due to Alex Jones being sidelined, and fake foreign accounts being deleted and monitored. He used, and could still use, all that conspiracy theory and fake news to gain votes.
But it’s all a pretty base insult to the 1st Amendment, and I sure hope the tech companies don’t let themselves be bullied into changing the way they do business.
No he is doing it because the tech titans are blatantly liberal. Anyone want to disagree with that?
He has enough to stones to take on the FBI, the tech titans, China, an idiotic tax code, the UN when it acts in an anti US way, supports Israel, takes on NATO when we they are not fulfilling their obligations, putting on sanctions on the biggest terror sponsor on earth, rebuilding our military, enforcing our borders, supporting the police, baiting the take a knee crowd, encouraging US energy production, helping businesses create millions of jobs, getting the Feds out of the way, helping you keep a few dollars in your pocket, helping drain the Washington swamp, cleaning out the liars in the FBI, pointing out the fraud of the investigations, pointing out the FISA court abuses signing off on knowingly false documents, appointing conservative Supreme Court Justices (another one soon!) and all the while over the sniveling and whining from the left, not one stinking vote helping anything anywhere, and is having fun baiting them at every turn. This is almost as fun as watching a great football game.
It is just plain fun waking up in the morning as the economy races along and watching the press implode and lie daily and try not report on any of the good news. Folks know better.
I really appreciate the most hateful name calling posts on this blog…it only reinforces the narrative. They give me a lot of laughs almost every day. I appreciate the other well though out comments.
Glad BJ is back in the liberal cocoon once again! I guess you gave him a timeout but apparently he is back.
Until tomorrow…
What a meal!!! Loretta outdid herself today!! And BJ was actually the star of the show!! Sorry Andrew! His hateful tweets had my buds literally doubled over howling!! The pages of posts became stained with sweet tea and smeared with creamed corn as all was passed around the table – family style!! Lol!! Drew did get Honorable Mention with his ” superior ” passage!! Ol’Rowland about choked on his cone-bread!! Even Loretta, who usually just watches our shenanigans, was cackling at BJ’s desparaging couple of posts! And now, Praise be to Jesus, he’s back amongst us!!! Gotta new folder ready! Libs: don’t let me down!
So you talk to your imaginary friends about posters on this site?
Damn, to talk about living rent-free somewhere….
I don’t know what is more pathetic, whether this be a lie or the truth.

In God We Trust, Liberals pay cash!
If the salve don’t work, maybe some surgical staples, or some liniment like DMSO or something…KY? Rubber gloves, cough, right Doc?
Should we come up with the Douche of the Day Award? It would be a close race the last few days!
Let’s say you live in South Africa. Don’t you wish the liberals were in charge and confiscated all of your guns? Well they are trying to do just that. How surprising. Not. Abusive power always wants to confiscate guns doesn’t it?
