I read the interview with James Cobb. He has some good points.
The reason the South never advanced was because we couldn’t accept defeat and tried to change the narrative. Acceptance of defeat would have freed the South to make advances in race relations, education, and commerce.

I moved here because I liked what I saw when I visited for the Olympics, and I needed to new start in a new place.
I stayed because I realized just how much help is needed in the public policy space.

I came down here because I was offered basically a free ride to SCAD.
I came back because someone looked at my resume while my college roommate was proof reading it and made me a great offer.
I got to rebuild public works and infrastructure of the South for the last 20 years. (I get paid to figure out all the regulations that go into spending our taxes – SPLOST, TSPLOST, ESPLOST, Black Grants, DHS Grants, HHS grants, ect…) Wisconsin already had good infrastructure and public works (until Walker started screwing it up 7 years ago) so my skills were not in high demand. I already have post retirement planned back in Wisconsin.
I talked to a person a while back who had moved from Florida to Buffalo NY because of housing. People move because of a variety of reasons. Most of the people that come to GA are retired and looking for freebies or they have family here from my experience.
What freebies does GA offer retirees?
They get them good tax breaks. Large exemptions in income tax, always local exemption from property taxes..

My personal theory of the south advancing is that it was the advent of refrigeration and air conditioning.
AC is what lets me stay here. Many a time while standing in the sun on clay baked 95 degree day with a 102 heat index I ask myself, is my pay check really worth my suffering in this heat?

I love it. Forts, snow man, skiing, snow angles, ice stating. Taking my cousin’s daft Shire team pull a sled over the home farm. I love driving on fresh snow before it ices over and hearing it crunch as it packs. I even do all the shoveling and snow blowing when I’m home. I seldom see 5′ It might be u to 2-4 around Christmas.
I grew up outside of Philly. I remember when we were kids we used to jump off a second floor fire escape landing into the snow drifts below. My folks say there hasn’t been snow like that up there for a long time.
I talked to some people who had moved down here and their children stayed in NH. We asked them why and one of the reasons why the kids stayed in NH is because of their love of winter sports. You gotta admit if you like those kinds of things the south is not going to be very appealing to you.

But why would you buy a used mattress? Wouldn’t you just ask them to sell you a new one, or get the brand/model name? It’s a very bizarre thing to do.

But Schiller has the resources to track it down if it still exists, and if Putin is the consummate professional that we think he is, it is not a stretch to believe that he might have saved that mattress as confirmation of what is on the tape.

Then all he has to do is get it into the hands of a trusted accomplice. Schiller can’t just randomly burn a mattress somewhere, but there are people with resources who can. But this is so nasty even Devin Nunes wouldn’t do it. But Pruitt’s in the dog house so he has to do it, but he’s so stupid and clumsy he can’t even keep it on the q.t.

That has always been known but it’s likely that considering the leaks coming out of the white house they are attempting to figure a way to get rid of Kavanaugh. As to the substance, I’m consistent. This woman reported the alleged abuse to a doctor, and I’m inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt, and there should be an independent investigation from law enforcement. While it is different from Kavanaugh’s case– in that Ellison’s case is about domestic violence, and not sexual assault– the same standards should apply.

She sent the letter months ago. She contacted the Washington Post in 2017 before Kavanaugh was even named. The fact that it is all coming out now is due to the inept handling of Kavanaugh by the GOP from the beginning starting with hiding his records. Even the GOP acts like he’s a defective supreme court candidate. If the GOP doesn’t investigate this the Democrats will. So it’s best to do a full investigation and cut your losses while you can.

It seems to me Ford’s lawyer is not telling many details in order to kind of smoke out the excuses Kavanaugh is going to come up with. We really don’t know how many details Ford is going to testify to on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if there are more details that she will reveal.

Right. 1st of all every Judge is an activist. Judges make decisions, which are actions. If you think that they don’t have discretion to fill in the gaps of statutory ambiguity, and do so based upon the entire range of their preferences, including policy preferences, you just don’t know how the law or Courts work.
Also, if you think the Court has given only “liberal” decisions over the past 50 years, you are even more clueless.
And you are yet even more clueless if you think the Court, and not the Congress, is the major lawmaking power. At any point in time. Regulatory agencies have also been delegated a LOT of power, so it is arguably the Executive power which ahs expanded the most in recent decades.
But look at so-called liberal laws- ones that give people liberty to marry who they want, say. Was there a Court decision? Yes. But there already a dozen states with laws passed by their legislatures, and 25 more that did so by State courts. Medical marijuana? What else you worry about? Medicaid expansion? Passed by Congress. Affirmed by S.Ct. What else?
I’m at the point where congress just needs to write Roe v. Wade as a law. It’s supported by 63% of the country.
This is not my area of expertise, but I imagine a lot of state legislatures didn’t encode Roe v Wade because they didn’t have to. But if they had to, they would. And Roe v. Wade has been a durable decision despite decades of controversy– for a reason. It is hard to imagine any law or Court that would remove the right of a woman’s choice pre-viability that could withstand any legal challenge. Although you could probably mandate procedures. For decades, it’s been the reasonableness of the burden thing at the heart of all the litigation for decades. That wouldn’t go away in any event.
I know some states have already written laws that trigger if Roe is overturned making an overturn moot. The question would be the fights in the states that do not have some sort of trigger law.
