Good morning from tybee island!
The exclamation point says it must be nice there.
The weather here in NW Atlanta is just beautiful today.
It was beastly during in the week. The humidity was well over 80%.
You got to go thru the obstacle course around the draw bridges… The close down a lane some times between 9-5 during the week just to let you know.
No problems for us at the drawbridge.
We wanted to go to the Green Truck Pub in Sav for burgers but it was closed for vacation!
Hot, but breezy on the beach. 🙂
Watched some guys net fishing from the north beach/river channel. Their first haul was 13 lbs of shrimp,a few blue crabs, a couple of small sharks, a catfish, and several small fish. That was fun to watch. They threw everything back except the shrimp.
Big storm passed through Sat afternoon. Thankfully it wasn’t a sharknado.
I could of told you Green Truck was closed for vacation if you asked. A lot of shopped close for a week in September after the summer holiday and before the October festival season starts. They do a lot equipment upgrades.

I think the Senate Repubs are backed into a corner, where they have to hold a vote on Kav even if they know they don’t have the votes. Then they can blame it on Jeff Flake if they lose.
And it may be a roll of the dice, but in the calculus, they may think that they’re going to take heavy losses in midterms anyways, so they have to do their version of their best, so cut the losses and get Kav on the Court at all costs.
The woman that says she knows about the rape train is going on TV this weekend. I guess they could vote on him today and put him on the supreme court but then they are going to have to deal with massive fallout next week one month before an election.
Yeah, I agree. They certainly act like they are going to lose both the house and the senate in November. However they are not thinking about the long term damage this is going to do to the GOP.
I disagree. The GOP is acting like a party that never expects to lose power. There is a larger plan at play here. I think they may be relying on the unsecure voting machines in a bunch of states to allow vote manipulation. If that doesn’t work, they may refuse to seat the new congress in the event Democrats win by saying the Chinese “hacked” the election. We are in deep, uncharted territory. We may have to flood Washington, DC. I’m ready.
I never said demise. I said long term damage. Alex Castellanos has said that right now their strategy is failing. You can’t depend on rural areas with declining populations to win every election. You have to expand the electorate which the GOP is not doing. Playing to the far right 20% of the country is not a long term strategy. A democracy is not going to stand for minority rule for very long. Either all this is going to destabliize our country or we are going to lose democracy.
Fivethirtyeight is hovering around an 80% chance for the Democrats to gain ~32 seats in the House. The Senate is ~66% to remain Republican.

I don’t think I can do anything about the congressional makeup. My wife and I downsized not too long ago and I now live in the 10th District “represented” by Jody Hice. I’m neither a Democrat or Republican at this point. I am vehemently anti-Trump however, the only wall I want built is Jefferson’s between church and state. I am for most anyone willing to curb this administration’s agenda.

I do not rant and rave about anything – you must have me mistaken for one of the paid Dem hell-raisers who have been defiling our nation’s Capitol. FYI, it wasn’t that the GOP didn’t want the FBI to check out not just one person’s accusations — they wanted and did have the FBI do yet another thorough background investigation after his nomination to SCOTUS on July 9th. This made 6 FBI investigations of this man for top security clearances, all of which covered his lifetime since birth.
The GOP did not see the need for taxpayers to foot the bill of a 7th FBI investigation of a man the FBI had found squeaky clean 6 times already. The power-crazy Dems and their rich supporters like Soros knew it was not necessary — they just wanted to DELAY yet again on the longest confirmation process in history, so they could use it for fundraising purposes. (normally 65-70 days, start to finish; this one is now going to 87 at least)
The Dems had Ford’s letter of accusation in their hands for 45 days, including the 3 days of Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, prior to springing it on the country 2 weeks ago today. Why didn’t they give it to the Committee Chair sometime during that 45 days, if they seriously wanted a supplemental FBI investigation? During that time when the Judiciary investigators were doing a closed investigation with the FBI, Ms. Ford’s request for privacy would have been honored and any questions answered. Why didn’t they ask Kavanaugh one single question about this during the 3 days at the first of September when he was testifying and answering their questions under oath?
They hid this as a political weapon, used Ms. Ford for a pawn and treated her badly, didn’t care how difficult they made her life in their blood-thirsty quest to destroy Judge Kavanaugh. They do not care who they hurt or how much damage they do to others’ lives. Once this political gamesmanship episode is over, they will kick her to the curb – and start hunting other people to use as their foils.

I would definitely say that is a multi paragraph rant. These accusations were never dealt with on the other background investigations. So your argument there is pointless. Dr. Blake asked Feinstein to keep her name confidential and she did. Dr. Blake was apparently mistaken thinking that the GOP would do the right thing and investigate her claims without all this. And when you start on Soros conspiracy theories, it says more about your rant than anything else.

Well, apparently there are not the votes there for Kavanaugh and an FBI investigation is going to be done and after that possibly a vote.
I don’t know if the investigation actually gets done. There’s a lot of risk.
It might be easier just to say this has been an awful Democratic conspiracy to ruin Kav’s life, and Kav doesn’t want his family exposed to such Democratic badness any more, and that he is withdrawing, but Repubs need to go to polls to ensure they can still nominate a conservative to the Court.
He very well might withdraw. He certainly seemed to be dead set against the FBI checking into these claims. I don’t know how that works for conservatives going to the polls after the same people picked Kavanaugh. I seriously do not understand their investment in Kavanaugh especially with all his problems. I guess it’s all about “owning the libs” or some such nonsense.
Considering he would likely be as far to the right as Thomas, I think it is clear why the vast majority of Republicans are all in on this one.

I don’t know, I think this guy is such an ideologue that he might very well hang on for another week. I agree with what I think you are saying, that at what point is it worth putting your family through more turmoil? Getting a SCOTUS nomination is such a crapshoot that it has to hard for someone like Kavanaugh to walk away from.
He doesn’t care about his family. If he did, he would not have said yes to going on the supreme court. Of course, apparently he’s gotten away with things his entire life so I’m guessing that he thought he would again.
In hindsight bringing in those high school female basketball players and all those other women sure didn’t seem like such a good idea. I have to say though all that theater makes me think that he and someone else probably knew this was a problem, knew his history and thought bringing young women into the hearing would help.
I believe Kavanaugh does love his family very much. He is also highly driven and he wants to see this through, even if it ends up taxing them.
I grew up around some highly privileged Catholic school boys and I could tell that they have this aura of entitlement. It is helpful to remember that elite alums also stick together, hence letter signed by the 65. I think he is very smart but he also partied very hard in his youth and he forgot some of the things he did.
He is clearly overcompensating by his beneficent treatment of women in his adult life.
Well, what I think you might be saying is that he knew he was exposing his family to the possibility of these things. But I’m sure he cares for them.
But I don’t think he expected his high school and college history and these allegations to actually get heard– that he got assurances from the Repubs that they wouldn’t, that they’d move fast enough to get him confirmed before they do. My guess is he also thinks that because he has moved past it in his life, that it shouldn’t matter. But of course there is a higher standard at play here.

I’m sure the GOP gave some assurances to him that it was going to be an easy nomination. However Mitch McConnell told Trump not to nominate him because he had “problems” and I just read that the ABA had downgraded him 12 years ago too after some interviews they did with judges and coworkers naming some of the problems we’ve seen in his nomination process. So at least to some they knew of some of these things.
The most amazing thing is he just lied about even small stuff in the nomination process.

I’m glad that they are finally getting around to light rail. When they pave over the Gulch the streetcar should be used as filler. The Gulch itself should wait for a real purpose and not just a developer’s dream to make a profit at the taxpayers’ expense.
Since there was a link heralding the next financial crisis because we HAVE to cut spending (which was funny since they said that in the same breath as talking about the tax cuts…but not a word about maybe revisiting them…). Well, fyi, since we left the Gold Standard…we have NEVER, and yes that is absolute, never had anything like a financial crisis because of federal debt. When you create the worlds reserve currency out of thin air it gives you some pretty cool rights…like running just about as much debt as you want. Of course, Her Trump is doing his best to screw that up with sanctions and the Iran deal (forcing the other countries that DO want the deal to find a way around American dominance of the world financial system). I watched most of the testimony from both and in my mind she came off as more credible. But guess what? At the risk of offending the fairer sex I have to state that regardless of teenage hormones run amok I’m more disturbed with a candidate for the highest court acting like the total partisan hack that he is in the here and now. In an ideal world a Supreme Court Justice should be above partisan politics but in the absence of that ideal they are expected to separate the politics from the law come decision time. I’m more concerned about Judge Kavanaugh’s judicial temperament given some of his irrational testimony including his tin hat speculations that the Clintons are behind these accusations.
If you really want to go historic then let’s get back to 60 votes for cloture and therefore get more centrist justice nominations regardless of the party in the White House.
You couldn’t be more tone-deaf than to compare Kavanaugh’s travails imposed by the nomination review to the kidnapping, beating, mutilation, and murder of a 14 yo boy for bumping against Jim Crow.

Not a sniveling lib here, – the USMCA Deal is basically NAFTA with a few slight changes. In fact less changes that NAFTA would have gotten if the US had stayed in the TTP. This deal does allow more access of US dairy goods into Canada on very detailed list of products, fixes intellectual property, and restores the ‘no tariffs’ on autos, steel and aluminum. However, it also imposes extreme regulations of business that was not there before and doesn’t fully insure manufacturing job remain in the US, it just makes it harder to move the jobs to Mexico or Canada (so they can now go to Asia instead). What is does do is give Trudeau cover with his Quebec base for the up coming Canadian election and lets Trump say “I Killed NAFTA” to his base. He didn’t kill it, he just gave it a new name with less items we would have gotten with the TTP.

Kavanaugh’s college roommate said that the FBI never contacted him for any of the background checks and if they had he would have told them about Kavanaugh being a beligerent drunk.

Actually folks have ‘bothered to do it’. Andrew spent the last bit of the Obama admin. working on it. Is this an improvement? I noted it was and it would have been fixed plus the US gotten more and earlier with the TTP. Is China an issue, yes and the TTP would have limited them doing a lot of stuff they are doing in the TTP countries. In fact, prior to 2017, most Republicans and business class types were okay with what was going on in trade and the TTP. And I noted why Canada is happy, they got almost everything the wanted plus more regulations (Canada like regulation if you recall) to prevent Canadian companies from moving jobs to the US – all for a few very specific dairy related issues that will mainly effect 3 states (one of which I have a vested interest in) literally for a little spilled milk which will not overly effect the Canadian dairy industry or Trudeau’s voter base in Quebec.

The white house has responded to public pressure and is now going to let the FBI interview all pertinent witnesses regarding Kavanaugh. So in other words the restrictions on who they can interview have been rescinded. That should be welcome news for everyone.
Amen. Lets clear the air. And do so with the 7th FBI investigation. Lets investigate Feinstein’s leak. Lets investigate Cory Booker and Keith Ellison’s sexual battery claims. I don’t think there are any statute of limitations form the state the so called rape parties occurred. Would you go to 9 or 10 of them if that kind of stuff was doing on? I doubt I would.

DTM does raise an interesting point, but not on purpose. He says that he wouldn’t go to this party, or believe anyone else would, with the latter judgment clearly based upon his own thoughts and feelings. Which raises the point- why are there so many politicians (I won’t say Republicans moreso often than Dems even if it were true) that base their professional judgments solely on their own personal (selfish)experiences? Like the homophobe who says it’s OK to be gay only after their daughter comes out? Or the anti-weed person who wants to decriminalize only when their grandson has seizures?
To the point, Kavanaugh says he knows how the world works and that he doesn’t live in a bubble, but he clearly didn’t know what it was like to have to give testimony– something so basic to Courts. Or to be a Defendant, in a way. Yet he has ruled against so many Defendants, likely from a standpoint of privilege. But now that he sees what it’s like To Be Judged, it is more likely (even if not probable) that he would be more sympathetic to Defendants’ cases, that he might reconsider that lie detector case he ruled on, etc.
