Morning Reads for Monday, October 8, 2018
We are 28 Days away from Election Day with only 4 Mondays left to make the magic happen. Good news, they’re calling for some rain so those signs are going to go into the ground a little easier.
- Here’s the rain I was talking about. Supposedly there’s a temperature drop coming too, but I’ll believe when I feel it.
- Officials are calling a limousine crash in New York last night the deadliest in over a decade.
- As good as Manchin’s Kavanagh vote was for the GOP over the weekend, his seat still isn’t safe.
- Stephen Colbert’s Late Show” writer, Ariel Dumas, is another example of the our downward spiral in human empathy.
- This guy was fired for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat while working as a reporter for NBC affiliate in Minnesota.
- So, apparently, we have put the Island of Shetland on the wrong place on the map for, like, forever. And it made Shetlanders mad. So, we fixed it.
- For those of you with littles in your life, have YOU thought about where you are shopping for Christmas since Toys R’ Us is out? Everyone else has.
- Mislabled food leads to 2nd allergy related death by Pret a Manager…
- Anyone else obsessed with Banksy? Just me? Ok. But, putting a shredder in the frame of a painting JUST IN CASE it went up for auction is pretty brilliant.
- Comedian KevOnStage says he loves Atlanta and people in LA and other large cities need to stop “move-shaming” those moving to the Peach State.
- WalletHub gives us the 10 best and worst places to live in Georgia.

Banksy is a genius, gopers are irony-proof over any us-vs-them issue, and pret a manager is what Trump hopes from his hires.
I read elsewhere that the buyer would likely keep the painting as Banksy’s stunt probably increased the value by a half-mil.
Saved you a click – the ten best places to live in Georgia are where all the white people (and golf carts) are livng, the ten worst places are not where downthemiddles black golf buddies live.
I would say Athens/Clark County belongs on the list. Diversity, culture, food, and public transportation. A liberal dream town.
You still think he’s lying about his black golfing buddies? Lol! You’re a hoot!
Listened to this band while camping on the Chattooga River at Reed Creek this past week . It was hot but the water was so nice and cold.
The first video was unavailable. Mandolin Orange is the band.
I don’t think there is any way that Sotheby’s wasn’t in on that gig. I’m supposed to believe that the curators at the most prestigious auction house see a slot in a frame and don’t shine a little flashlight up into it?
The most amazing part is that Friend-of-Banksy still had a remote that operated the shredder!
The auctioneer looked right toward the painting as soon as he struck the gavel.
He knew.
And who hit the button?
Lawsuit and/or refund pending.
What’s left goes up in value. Banksy is based on temporary and performance type installations. Very little is archival.
Or maybe they can add a supplementary frame to capture the shredded parts.
They have all the parts. it was single directional shredder, so it’a all long lines. It was also noted the Banksy has destroyed his own work before and this buyer is unknown. He might have bought his own work.
By the way, my traffic ticket was dismissed on Friday. It turns out that the law passed in July that made it OK to pass a school bus on a road divided by a turning lane didn’t have any provision for “effective date” so even though my ticket was in May it still applied.
I was prepared to fight the ticket on other grounds but didn’t need to.
I think the private company they have hired to try to collect on these tickets is being overly aggressive just to generate revenue for themselves. Sad for anyone who just went ahead and paid it if it was questionable like mine.
Interesting, because the lack of an effective date was no doubt purposeful, because including one in legislation is 100% standard.
I’ve come to the opinion that privatizing anything in the realm of law enforcement leads to over-enforcement and other injustices. Any time there is performance-based contingency payments or other warped financial or performance incentive, it’s just not gonna work.
Agree 100 percent. All red light cams are pure harassment and should be taken down.
The red light cams in Savannah are owned by the City of Savannah, no private company is involved.
They got it bad in Ohio:
The Dragon Cam takes a photo of the violator and then an officer sends that image and speed information to a company that maintains the city’s stationary camera system.
The information is then matched up and a citation is sent to the registered owner of the car in less than a week.
Newburgh Heights Police have been using this new radar gun for the last five months.
Police have written just under 2,000 tickets since August.
The Chief acknowledges that this has been a revenue generator for the department and the village. The money goes into a general fund to help out police and the village of Newburgh Heights.

Congrats!!
Re: Georgia Gov’s race: now that I’ve been told that Brian Kemp wants women with breast cancer to die, and Stacey Abrams is trying to hire child molesters to work at pre-schools, I’m going to move this race into the toss-up column.
That would be the only way it actually gets close. Stacey loses by at least 5.
From the other thread. I was surprised at McConnell’s response about the SC picks and I had never heard the “different party” rationale. As much fun as it would be to tweek y’all about it, I would not support a Trump 2020 SC nomination.
It seems like McConnell’s only consistent principle is Party Uber Alles.
He would get all the support he needs for it, too, and even you, ole Noway, may change your tune.
Look at the possibility of circumstances– what if the vacancy occurs in January or February 2020? McConnell will say the election is too far away, and most all Repubs will agree, having forgotten about Merrick Garland. What if there is an important case? Can’t risk that- we’ll have to break precedent to ensure our values. And again, most all Repubs will agree, having forgotten about Merrick Garland.
There is no longer any principle but Party Uber Alles.
McConnell only cares about packing all federal benches with conservative judges. If he had to sell out his own party to make that happen, he would.
I sure as hell would. In fact, I can think of few things that would tickle me more than Leader McConnell, in 2020, pushing Amy Barrett onto the court to replace a retiring RBG!
Lol! You need to post daily!!!
We see you once or twice a month. That ain’t enough!
Pope’s head could not stand that! And buttercup would run out of handmaiden tale lunacy!
A
Alpha I am going to steal your Buttercup nickname! At least she better be thankful it’s not Butterface! But I digress! Do these radical fools actually think this is going to attract a normal person to vote for the domestic terrorists? I don’t think so.
Do you have imaginary female friends too?
With attitudes like that, it’s no wonder why the country is in the state it’s in.
If all we see is myopic “winning”, then we will continue to be a divided nation, where fundamental weaknesses stay unresolved while those who we are truly competing against advance.
Look at it like a marriage: If you share a TV, you may not always watch the TV show you want to watch, but sharing makes the marriage work and last. Or you can watch different TVs, but as with the Supreme Court, sometimes there is no option or alternative.
GaGOP representation can’t even collude on their own letter without without feigning independence. From this morning’s Politicially Georgia.
.
“While researching online in Google, I noticed a letter to the editor of the Savannah Morning News written by Rep. Jesse Petrea. That letter is word-for-word the same as written and submitted by Rep. Terry Rogers.
.
“The next Google item was the same letter to the editor, written by Rep. Rick Williams in Milledgeville’s The Union-Recorder.
.
“Then in the Marietta Daily Journal, Rep. Matt Dollar has also submitted the exact letter, word-for-word. Finally, in a two-minute search, I found another letter to the editor – with a few changes – from Rogers’ original letter, from Rep. Trey Kelley in northwest Georgia.”
So, link to it or what was the letter?
It’s getting to be decision time. I’m too old to see the big changes from the rising temps but my daughter and grandchildren will have to live in that world.
“Grim Forecast From U.N. On Global Climate Change”
“It’s the final call, say scientists, the most extensive warning yet on the risks of rising global temperatures.
Their dramatic report on keeping that rise under 1.5 degrees C says the world is now completely off track, heading instead towards 3C.
Keeping to the preferred target of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will mean “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”.
It will be hugely expensive – but the window of opportunity remains open.”

Hmm. Didn’t see something like this coming: (/sarcasm):
Days to go before deadline, Georgia DDS voter registration crashes
“The people most likely to be permanently affected by the outage, Abramowitz said, include would-be new voters without an ID, and those with sketchy access to transportation, the internet or stable time off work. And those, he said, were more likely to be African-American, lower income or young. They would skew Democratic.”
Kemp should have resigned long ago if for no other reason than to prevent the possibility of him or his staff having something to do with this.
There oughta be a law.

Early voting begins 10-15. Get your coolers and lanterns ready. Nice sleeping bag. Let the Red Tsunami begin!!
I’m thinking I may vote early for the 1st time ever. Just to get it over with. Despite my usual pleasure in going to the polls on Election Day. I.e., the thrill is gone, subsumed to the rancor.
Maybe this is how old and cranky people feel, Noway?
Could be, could be…if they’re Libs. Me? I’m not that old. But I’m deliriously stoked!! Could 2019 give us another pick? Could be, could be…
You were born in the 1960’s… Technically you’re on the back side of the average age of Americans in this country (37-38 Years old). Statically speaking, your ‘old’.
Your body may not be that old but your mind is waaaay over the hill!
You think Kav and Thomas will have lunch tomorrow to swap stories about how lies destroyed their reputations?
Falstaff or Miller? Hamms or Strohs?
He partied in the 80s, right?
So that could be Michelob, Genesee, Milwaukee’s
Be(a)st, maybe Coors Light. Pabst, Schlitz…
You know how in courtrooms there are pitchers of water and cups on the table for the judges and lawyers? It would be awesome if Kav put out a red Solo cup for himself or others.
St. Paulie Girl??
If it wasn’t Canadian, maybe he’ll switch it up to President’s Choice.
Republicans prefer light beers, the fat cats do not want to be too fat.
You know, the vote results for Kav would likely have been the same before the Dem Destruction Attack. But now, thanks to the Dems, our side is fired up moreso than any other time in history!! Lol!
All I gotta do is show you a pic of Hillary Clinton and y’all get “riled up”.
Kinda weird.
If I were a Dem strategist (I’m not), I’d say let Trump continue to be dismissive and divisive about the allegations, while also doing private investigation of facts, including for Ms. Ramirez and Ms. Sweatnik. There is evidence to find. Then run ads juxtaposing the evidence and the dismissiveness.
If you can show even just a little more proof behind the allegations, I think the GOP will start losing women quickly. And there is a whole month to go…
Balance, if we can show that the stories were fabricated and former FBI agents that worked with Strzok and others were involved in this too would you like to eat a little crow or will you still peddle the guilty until proven innocence nonsense?
If they were worried about the truth they wouldn’t have waited until the last second.
Lets see how witnesses were pressured to change their stories…by former FBI agents!! Gonna be funny and scary on those details.
Does anyone doubt the same goons on the Russia investigation have fingerprints on this frame job too?! Anyone want to make a bet on that?
Looks like some of you might want to quit betting. I have not been on here long but I haven’t seen a liberal win a bit yet!
J’all here TheLibs want to add twomore SC Justices! LMAO!!! Paging Mr. Roosevelt!!
Link?

More liberal tolerance! I guess she was reading the NY Times!
http://www.startribune.com/rosemount-educator-on-leave-after-tweeting-kill-kavanaugh/495903561/
More liberal domestic terror… I doubt these nitwits can even read the NY Times…but they sure are haters! Seems to be a lot of them on the radical side of the Isle. Do you think they followed the Lib professor that says we should all hate white women and when men too?
https://www.infowars.com/video-antifa-thugs-block-roads-direct-traffic-threaten-people-who-dont-obey/
Does any lib want to tell their sick buddies to stop some of this. Oh don’t forget you are guilty until proven innocent too—that has to be the case if you are condemning Kavanaguh. No evidence. I would not want to win elections fostering this kind of hate. It is scary any party could think this way…at least in America.
Ruh roh…
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/independents-disapprove-of-democrats-handling-of-the-brett-kavanaugh-nomination-by-a-28-point-margin
Did you read it?
I’m guessing no.
I’ll help: “Independents also disapproved of Republicans handling of the matter, but by a narrower 53 percent to 32 percent margin”.
Also: “the tactics pursued by the parties turned off independent voters.”
So, independent voters didn’t like any of the politics involved, and just a few percentage points more disapproved of the Dems. But they still didn’t want Kav on the Court.
So, kind of a “process” opinion. They still dislike Kav and their Congresspersons a lot.
We’ll see come November 6th, won’t we!
Proving yet again that comrade Noway doesn’t go beyond the headlines of an opinion piece of a right-leaning website for his propaganda. As BTB pointed out the independents disprove of both party’s handling of the Kavanaugh nomination. If you go to the actual CNN/ssrs poll results it was a 58% disapproval factor for the Dems vs. a 53% for the Republicans. While we are cherry picking you might also note that same poll has those identifying as independents have only a 39% approval rating answering: “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president?” “Ruh roh…” indeed.

TGM just swore in Kav at White House! MAGA!
Well, this has to, you know, kinda suck!! Lol!
https://finance.yahoo.com/video/alan-dershowitz-says-unconstitutional-democrats-222807851.html
Sure he is, Drew. Sure he is!! Lololol!
If I knew what the C stood for I would be stating both of your names using my best teacher voice and giving you a good scold for baiting Noway. SMH
One of the last remaining pages of The Playbook that wasn’t charred Saturday. They trot out the latest Al Gorged wannabe for another dire, 10 year Hoax Prediction!! Comical!!

Can anyone interpret this hateful rant? Is this person sick? White Women Come Get Your People…WTF?
So apparently radical leftist females tell us we should hate all white women too?! How did I miss the “I should hate everyone memo” ? I didn’t get the memo that I should hate all white men either.
I thought it was bad to hate anyone… blacks, whites, Muslims, Jews… much less any others.
I am sorry, I am not buying the utter hateful baloney.
Is this a mental sickness? Is this the product that modern feminists turn out on liberal college campuses? Miserable, hateful, twisted females. I know there are plenty of liberals on this group.
Do you want your daughters turning into this type of person? Do you want yourself to turn into something this hideous? Do you want to be around trolls like this?
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/06/opinion/lisa-murkowski-susan-collins-kavanaugh.html
Since when has one person op-ed become the prevailing fact for everyone.? Stop generalizing.
Oh you mean like lets hate ALL WHITE WOMEN AND WHITE MEN? ALL REPUBLICANS ARE RACISTS?
Might want to redirect that to the haters…and that is all the democratic party is. Not any policies that will benefit anyone other than the goons in power and control over your life.
I already sent a rely of my opinion of this iece to the actual writer instead of railing at everyone on here as if THEY wrote the OPINION piece – because if they don’t follow your Trumptopian world view 110% then HAVE to follow whatever freaky tidbit primetime FOX or Infowars or the crazy Midwestern mutual insurance salesman’s political blog you cut and paste. tells you about.
Again, Stop generalizing.
Did you read the article?
I’d start there.
Guessing No.
Because if you did, you wouldn’t be spewing stuff abt hate.
It’s not in the article, but it’s clearly what others are feeding you about it.
It’s like a malnourished dog chained in the backyard.
Rush and Breitbart bring you a bowl of poo for dinner and say this is what the Dems want you to eat. We love you–But Dems want you to eat this, because this is all they want to share with you. Here’s your poo. Eat up. Good dog.
Oh I read it. Lets all hate white women, white guys…hater hater…So how is that the golden rule. Bringing folks together. Not. Hate idiocy is what it is. More fuel for the domestic anarchists…not sure if is terrorists yet but by gosh it sure is close.
Like the Germans did to folks Ang? I know you are jesting but the rage you are filled with…and guilty until proven innocent bilge you supported…
Step 4: A tasty rendition of Soylent Green redone as Soylent White by adding classic white pizza ingredients to extra white people.
You’re not paranoid if all of us libs really are out to get you. Especially if you want to use one guy’s ravings and an infowars article to demonize your enemies in your own hellish mind.
I really think you’re just projecting all your hate onto where it doesn’t exist.
Or maybe it’s about a lack of reading comprehension.
Or both.
The piece tries to explain the social and psychological roots of why there is a political difference that mirrors demographic differences.
Not one ounce of hate. Frustration, yes. But the piece is just guesswork on what would motivate women to vote one way or another, and ultimately is an appeal to persuade white women to vote Democratic.
Which is exactly what Dems should be doing right now.
Maybe you read all pieces that explore gender or racial differences as hate pieces. Maybe its because you’re uncomfortable exploring the possibilities of the human id, superego, and ego– God knows what’s possible.
Maybe you’re just thick like a brick.
Probably that.
Read it again, but pretend you’re a black woman when you read it.
See if that changes anything.
Interesting article…belief in American exceptionalism has never been higher….yet all we hear from the radical socialists is how terrible things are. What gives? Are the times bad for the radical socialist message? Who wants it or needs it?
What do you think?
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/08/morgan-stanley-global-investors-are-betting-on-us-exceptionalism.html
Weird:
“…one month before launching his campaign, (Trump) told a room full of tea-party patriots that they shouldn’t call their country “exceptional” because that would hurt the feelings of Russian businessmen.
In late April 2015, the mogul spoke at an event hosted by Texas Patriots PAC titled ‘Celebrating the American Dream’” In a video of the event obtained by Mother Jones, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, a prominent local businessman, asks Trump, ‘Define American exceptionalism. Does American exceptionalism still exist? And what do we do to grow American exceptionalism?’
‘I don’t like the term. I’ll be honest with you, Trump replied. ‘People say, ‘Oh he’s not patriotic.’ Look, if I’m a Russian, or I’m a German, or I’m a person we do business with, why, you know, I don’t think it’s a very nice term. We’re exceptional; you’re not.’
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/06/trump-i-dont-like-american-exceptionalism.html
Europe and Asian countries not named China are looking for a area to put some cash since the bond market hit a 10 year high and the value of the dollar is going up. This is a win for them if stocks go up, or if the dollar falls and the can get a greater rate of return at a point of sale. The thing about the market is that it’s being held up by the prices of the FANG stocks and the smaller companies that are connected to them. If they slip, the whole market goes bearish. Additionally the long term effects of all the current M & A will not be felt till after the first of the year. They would want to get a tax year in before they start going layoffs and closing down repetitive departments. It’s also a bad time to be a bank stock. With house starts slowing and large market real-estate slowing and auto prices rising while loan rates go up due to the increase in inflation, banks are going to have lower dividends and have a harder time meeting their quarterly forecasts.
Ellynn so you would agree that the Fed has probably raised rates enough for a while? I agree with that.
It is hard to paint much poor economic or market news. It is due to reversing anti growth policies of you know who.
Yes the FANG stocks have had huge moves. Not a bad thing. Some are very reasonably priced like Apple, Google and even Facebook on PE and growth rates. Amazaon is pricy. I never understood Tesla’s valuation…
This is NOTHING like 2000 or 2008. Bonds stink as investments and almost always have stunk other than buying them when Carter was president and dumping them at record low rates. That game is over. Gold is even worse you so you have to go to stocks.
Indexing is fine. 90% of pros don’t beat it. Most of your returns come from reinvested dividends.. If you want to beat the indexes, cherry pick them. Buy the best dividend payers or dividend growers, maybe the top 50 or 100. Adjusting each year or quarter makes you buy low and sell high each year which is marvelous and increases yields as well. They are much lower multipled stocks as well and hold up better.
Cherry pick the indexes for the best free cash flow yielders and you get even better results. You can do that and not worry much and go travel and hit golf balls if you ask me.
I love how you make statements like I’m going to agree. Rate increases will depend on the cost and demand factor of goods and materials. As the value of the dollar goes up, the price of fungibles that are based on the US dollar will either A) go up if they are maintaining globe demand (like oil and some minerals that the electronic industry is defendant on) or B) the lost will be greater in value because of exceeding demand (like soy and wheat pricing). Dairy prices still maintain low valuation even with the NAFTA 2.0 changes.
The issue with bonds is foreign powers are not buying them. Traditionally that is a steady (although small) income into the Treasury not being gained. In the long run it increases U.S. year to year debt.
I expect stocks to payout very nicely in dividends in December. With companies bringing money back into the country (which could have happened over 5 years ago if the GOP house took up the Obama corporate tax cut instead of shelving it to prevent a ‘win’), that money needs to be used for either, M & A, capital improvements (which are not as large as the industry expected), payroll (bonuses, not wages), stock buy backs, or dividends. Company and personal tax returns for the 90% who it was written for (I’m personally going to break even or ay more er my CPA and finical advisor) will be nice come February and March.
Next year will be different. The money will be back in the US. The stock payouts will be different too.
I don’t look at 2000 or 2008 as a comparison. I look at 1986-1988. The Reagan tax cut increased dividends, wages and the largest M & A events until this year as it went into effect. M & A ALWAYS lead to layouts, sell offs and/or location closures. And employers will not mine if unemployment raises a little, since it makes hiring cheaper. Also the effect of not being able to write off a HELC will change how people do big ticket spending. It will effect the home improvement industry. My parents funded what my college scholarships did not through a HELC. That will hurt the banking industry too.
I’m also looking at what happened after the prior longest growth period in US history stopped. The next 5 years were not pretty. The economy will eventual stop growing.
Nikki Haley resigns as Trump’s U.N. ambassador
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/09/us/politics/nikki-haley-united-nations.html
So I wonder if it was the Presidential stand up comedy routine to the UN that included the zinger that in a mere 600 days his administration “has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.” Or perhaps being undercut by decisions by Trump, Netanyahu, and Adelson to recognize Jerusalem as the Israili capital or cutting off aid to the Palestinians pitting her against the rest of the world. In any case this administration has seen an “unpresidented” amount of departures.
To or from?
From.
But if Trump is ousted or declines to run again, maybe she’ll run towards then.
She would be a strong candidate. Leaving now she can maintain her integrity and not have to worry about going down with the inevitable sinking of the ship.
Admittedly I don’t have a huge footprint in social media, by choice. Even at that none of my “friends” would be dumb enough to circulate this:
https://www.factcheck.org/2018/10/doctored-image-takes-aim-at-stacey-abrams/
Anyone seen it in the wild? Anyone but DTM thought it was for real?
TGM speaking. Now. Iowa!.
