Morning Reads for Monday, October 22, 2018
Two more Mondays, y’all. Two more Mondays.
Side-note/Moment of Personal Privilege:
I read the post from this past Wednesday by one of our contributors asking you to comment and tell us what you wanted more of and what you didn’t care for. Some comments were insightful, others, not so much. I want to thank y’all for taking the time to share your thoughts. I read each comment and took a lot of what you said to heart. You made me want to deliver what you asked for. I may not always have a ton of commentary here in the morning reads, but I will look for a wider variety of news to share with you.
- Our hearts and prayers are with the family, blood and blue, of Gwinnett Police Officer, Antwan Toney.
- The Central American caravan continues to grow as it heads North.
- The Powerball and Mega Millions are in the b-b-b-billions.
- The Ledger-Enquirer’s Chuck Williams did a nice profile on retired General Carmen Cavezza, who also served as City Manager for Columbus, GA.
- College football rankings are in…
- We don’t know enough about ovarian cancer, but some research could save lives.
- Somebody in Kansas stole a $4000 inflatable colon and the hospital wants it back.
- Sen. McConnell was confronted by protestors in a Kentucky restaurant.
- How it’s possible that we are still talking about Elizabeth Warren and her DNA is beyond me. But, sharing this article probably isn’t helping. Whatever.
- Posting about Harry and Meghan, however, is 100% my prerogative. And I will continue to do so unashamedly.
- The Witches of Bushwick have placed a “hex” on Brett Kavanaugh.
- Not exactly a silver lining in regards to Hurricane Michael, but it’s as close as I can find.

It appears that Trump has been lying to you guys.
http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-governors-races-gop-20181011-story.html
Pundits are projecting the GOP losing 8 governorships. MI, WI and IL right off the top of my head are gone for the GOP.
Walker losing in Wisconsin has very little to do with Trump and more to do with bad budget cutting on Walker’s part for Education, the UW system, the science education programs, The DNA research program, and the DNR (never mess around with a persons bear tag applications in Wisconsin), messing with the independent board that has oversight of the state pension system, screw over the department of correction employees, messing with Wisconsin Supreme Court picks, cutting off transportation funding for some major long awaited road work in the northern part of the state and then promising roughly the same amount to the road work around Foxcon, taking a lot of houses and farmland for the area around Foxcon, promising a whole lot of tax credit and breaks at the state level with out going through the legislators for Foxcon, and doing some other shady and questionable thing that warrant 4 of his former staffs members to tell folks to vote for a Dem who has at least 6 counts of plagiarism (he was head of the Department of Ed at the time).
He’s been doing everything you have stated for 8 years though. Personally I think it’s the Foxcon thing that was just the last straw and the scrunity he recieved while running for president did not help and it’s a bad year to be a Republican.
The pension board and court issues started in 2015. The cuts in 2011 and 2013 are just starting to make a difference on the HS and college level (especially in tuition increases). The DNA research issue was from 2016. The bear tag issue was 2017. The only thing you can pin on Trump are tariff related issues and some companies closing older plants for the tax write off under the next tax cuts.
You know I’m from Wisconsin, right?
Yes, I know you are from WI and I’m not disagreeing with what you are saying. However I dont’ see where I specifically blamed Trump for WI problems.
“He’s been doing everything you have stated for 8 years though”
I was pointing out most of Walkers issues have been since he was last elected in 2014.
A bit of snark from the weekend suggests that Lindsay Graham is equal parts Scarlett O’Hara and Blanche DuBois.
Whatever your politics, willful and neurotic seem to describe the Senator’s reactions the past year or so. The country would be better served if he got a red convertible and a mistress like a normal guy going through a mid-life crisis.
So, the purloined colon was in a pickup….and not a semi?
Mr. The Deep Dark; this is good example on why I would like an eye roll icon next to the thumbs…
You so funny, John! 🙂
Punny.
We could use one of those for the Capitol exit, as well.
It would be so tight, no one could get out.
Have we ever gotten this much national attention to a governor’s race? If we have I certainly do not recall it.
Yeah, Lester Maddox v. Howard “Bo” Callaway v. Ellis Arnall v. The plural majority of Georgia’s voters.
Okay. Well, I was a child and I did not live in GA. So i guess that would explain me not knowing about it.
Well, I’m an old codger but yeah, Lester got Georgia lots of national press, and not in a good way. He was the last overt segregationist governor. The legislature giving him the governorship even though he finished in 2nd place still chaps my ass 52 years later. If they had to give it to a Democrat it should have been former Gov. Ellis Arnall. Fun fact, Maddox and Arnall had a primary runoff election and primary loser Jimmy Carter threw his endorsement to Maddox. They were to have fun a few years later when Carter was governor and Maddox was Lt.Gov.
Debate tomorrow. Could be interesting!
Not many undecideds left in this race, but I think it’s probable that a debate is the kind of thing that can sway these (potential) voters.
Will Kemp be able to articulate any sort of coherent plan?
How many times will he mention Pelosi?
How long into it before she says he should resign as SoS? ( I say about 2 mins into her first chance to speak.)
After seeing Abigail Spanberger take Dave Brat apart for his constant whining about Nancy Pelosi it will be interesting to see if he even brings her up.
I think there’s many out there who don’t yet know how smart and well-versed in policy Abrams is. Kemp will be full of talking points, so Abrams has to get him to improvise, to let his more shallow knowledge be clear. I want to see her prosecute his election systems mismanagement hard. Even though those CDs with confidential info may have been the least of his incompetencies, it will still strike people powerfully.
Truly. That was a sight to see. Especially the part where the NRA is runnign ads against Gillum because he didn’t want people bringing guns to parks where people picnic. Desantis looked like he was going to burst into tears.
WSJ poll today shows Trump approval is his highest in office, 47%, and higher than Obama was at mid-term. Voter interest at midterms at record highs for both parties. Two weeks from tomorrow will be very, very interesting.
That was yesterday and it also shows the GOP getting wiped out in November. Yes, interesting for sure.

Nothing – but why don’t you get a new hat, man?
Unless I’m mistaken, Obama was our previous president (to which usually compared), and one that I thought was sooooo popular with the electorate. ‘Seemed like an obvious comparison.
I deleted my comment. You guys just seem so preoccupied with popularity and Obama and Clinton. It’s just weird, but whatever.
“A,,,,,,,,” ummm, correction, “Oh Goodness!” LOL! This cannot be positive for the Dems!!
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-10-20/judge-orders-mueller-prove-russian-company-meddled-election
The story, nevertheless, is factual. When you gonna stop killing messengers? Seriously. You do not address the substance of the story just the the Straw Dog of the medium. You are a sad liberal.
How do you determine that ANY info coming from a site that tells outright lies is factual? That isn’t “shooting the messenger”. That is doubting a source. Something you almost never practice as long as the publisher’s like Alex Jones, et al. agree with your worldview.
What’s crazy to me is that if you just take the headline from the URL and google it, it turns up pages and pages of blogs that have the same exact cut and paste headline, and story. There is no doubt a propaganda machine at work.
Assuming the substance of the story is true- which is difficult to do based upon the unreliability of the source- so what? You think Mueller doesn’t have proof? His only concern may be about protecting sources and methods, so will need to have sealed records or something.
So Russian agitprop is now factual because Noway says it is or because Putin told you so?
So if I understand your point, if I go to Russia and break one of their laws, I can claim that it doesn’t matter because I didn’t know it was against their law?
OK, aside from whether or not the story is factual, your comment is ‘this cannot be good for the Dems”. How so? What about that story is not good for Dems? What does it even have to do with Dems at all?
Thanks, Noway, and pay no attention to ACP’s usual “shoot the messenger” routine. A federal judge’s order for accountability is good news, no matter who said it.
Yeah, what’s unusual is a judge questioning anything Mueller decides to do.
LMAOOOOOOO!!! It’s ok, Drew, it’s ok. Crayons?
^ This comment should easily get 20 thumbs down.
This may be a more reasonable link to the story (I think it’s the same story. I ain’t clicking on no zerohedge link):
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-19/mueller-ordered-to-clarify-claims-against-putin-ally-s-company
If a Russian Troll posts links to a propaganda (aka FAKE news) HERE, does that help their google search ranks? More posts = higher rank in search results for that topic?
Да. Да, это так.
I love your new look, comrade!
If the message is “Ignorance of the law is OK for trolls”, and the messenger says “Aww Yeah, let those ignorant trolls do their thing”, then the messenger and the message are one and the same, and both should be shut down. Ignorance of the law has never been an excuse. Sound like the proof is already on the record.
Man, trolls sure now how to bait ignorance.
When do you think the DOJ will abide by the Ruskies discovery request?
No, I just find you, well, just plain boring. To quote Val Kilmer in Tombstone, ” I didn’t realize you were still there. You may go now…”
FYI, and as a PSA to all: When giving a link, everything from the question mark to the end can be eliminated.
The comments are awesome. It will take them 72 days to reach El Paso walking 8 hours a day.
So, comment section… better/worse?
OOOOOOOH! You mean we can do gifs now too? Which one of those thing above do I click to do one?
I assume the thumbs up/down is so we can somewhat police ourselves so that you don’t have to. I think we are still getting used to that as it’s not getting used much (which may be good).
Other than that, the format feels good.
A couple of things I haven’t figured out yet; It seems the ‘recent comments’ list up top isn’t refreshing as I expect it to. And sometimes comments appear in weird places. Like acp wrote a post just a short time ago that appeared as if it was the first post in this topic. But then it moved down to where it belonged. I’m not sure yet if you have to refresh the page or what exactly is going on with all that yet.
Yes, just happened again. My comment above appeared before acp’s, even though I posted it later. But then you refresh and it’s all in order.
No big deal. Just a little weird.
The up/down is basically there for fun now, just to see what happens.
It’s a rolling refresh… I might set it lower. I wanted to test out the load it caused.
You guy like that new comments show up highlighted yellowish?
I like it. And you can just hover over it to make it white again.
I like that too.
Yes, it took a minute to figure out, but it’s really a good thing. Oh, and if it’s no problem, setting the rolling refresh lower would be nice.
I’m loving it with the exception of the rolling refresh killing my comments a couple of times this morning. It could have been a coffee deprived operator at this end however. I rarely post any rejoinders to DTM as they fly over his head and it was a long one so it’s probably just as well.
He will soon enough.
I really do think the site would be much better off without his “contributions”.
And I hate excluding folks, so I would only vote for exile in extreme situations. A belligerent drunk at a party. A student in a classroom who spews ignorance loudly without raising his hand, All inappropriate, and all ways that really lower the quality of the space for many. If not exile, maybe his comments could be subject to approval. God knows we’ve tried hard to improve his ability to dialogue. But he never cared for any of our feedback.
Stifle that speech! Stifle that speech!!! If you don’t like his contributions just don’t read them.
That’s the thing. I usually skip over them.
But we are also a community of sorts, and we can help improve each other, and neither should we be subjected to breaches of standards.
If you set a standard that no one should murder anyone, and someone starts murdering, you just gonna ignore it? No, you stifle the murder.
Obviously that is not our standard, but I believe the standard is something about an elevated and civil dialogue.
Murder?! Good Lord! Time for you to take a Drew timeout! Seriously…
Feel free to substitute any standard of your choice. The analogy holds.
Standards should be upheld.
“maybe his comments could be subject to approval.”
Maybe yours should be monitored for “approval”, too!
“God knows we’ve tried hard to improve his ability to dialogue.”
Sez you!
Nothing wrong with his comments, only that you and The Libs don’t like them and started ghosting our accounts to stifle them.
That’s what this whole reason this recent thing started was y’alls incessant whining!
Here we go again.
No, the fact is that ‘some commenters’ vast majority of comments are just to antagonize. There is no attempt at dialogue, or to support any position, or to engage . it’s just to annoy. Much like your comment “LMAOOOOOOO!!! It’s ok, Drew, it’s ok. Crayons?”
I mean, what’s the point? That’s just childish and obnoxious. acp wrote a logical and sensible comment about the topic at hand, and rather than try to refute it, or engage further, you insult.
Yes, I think this is like a neighborhood. We all feel a bit like a community, and nobody likes a bad neighbor. We can diasgree, but you still gotta keep you lawn cut and pick up your dog poop.
So, comments like “Racist”, “Nazi” “Pedophile” and flat-out made-up quotes are not meant to antagonize?
That’s a rather narrow list. Use of those three words may be used as FACTS without any reasonable interpretation of antagonizing. Made up quotes, or links to same, say more about credibility. A malcontent, constantly doing that, would be perceived as antagonistic, or IMNSHO a childish bully prone to lying before thinking.
You guys are ganging up on Noway, as if this were your own private play pen. It’s not. Sometimes I feel the only adult in the room. Bene, ACP, NoP4M, back off. Just because he has a different viewpoint and doesn’t speak/write the same way you do doesn’t mean you have the right to deride him. He’s smart and funny, actually more entertaining than several other people on GAPol. Now you all behave yourselves, or DD may send you to your rooms!
All ‘we’ are asking is that if you are going to be a citizen here, just be a good citizen. You can be a Trump supporter, or a Jeb Bush supporter, or anyone else, but we are here to DISCUSS. Whenever you guys (rarely) drop some link and then get challenged you never try to defend it or engage in any way other than insult the challenger.
Noway posted that zerohedge link above, was challenged, and hasn’t responded at all to defend it. Well then what’s the point? And to top it off, he said “LOL! This cannot be positive for the Dems!!” How is that not obnoxious and juvenile? He’s just being aggravating on purpose. We can do better than that.
And for what it’s worth, Caroline (for example) has been challenged about some dubious comments too, by the lefties here. I think I have too.
I don’t know squat about zerohedge, but I did appreciate finding out about the judge’s ruling, which was the point of his post. And either you or somebody on here said that the same info was on several different websites. So what did it matter? All’s I’m sayin’ is it wasn’t worth insulting a fellow GaPol poster. Just ignore things you don’t like — that’s a good way to avoid high blood pressure!
Sorry, but Noway asked a question about “antagonistic”. Thus the interpretations of what is and is not antagonistic. That’s all. I think others have pointed there is a difference between “viewpoint” and slinging unverified poo on the walls and screaming “ya’ll party perjorative!” here.
I am totally OK with subjecting my comments to approval.
I don’t hate or call names or post links from propaganda sites and I try to add information whenever I opine or express.
If think DTM’s comments are quite the opposite. Harmful, repetitive, sucks the oxygen out of conversations, devoid of facts or critical thinking.
Nice dodge. Why don’t you answer my question about the inflammatory language hurled by your side? Is that not meant to antagonize?
In the many cases you have elicited those remarks, and you most certainly have, don’t even try to deny it, (like say, the Amos and Andy dialect thing you and DTM got into “performing” 2 or 3 weeks back), I have no problem with a duly earned pejorative being thrown your way.
In the case of DTM not getting the point or your pretense of same there is no name calling involved, but is taken as such in ignorance, actual and feigned.
Now, now, Will. There you go with the insults again. Try to play nice.
One man’s right is another man’s wrong. You say potayto, I say potahto. And all the cliches about people having different opinions on any given topic. I don’t think GaPol should become a speech Nazi. That’s what liberal leftists are trying to do to American society in general, and it’s a bad thing. Freedom of speech matters for both sides of today’s divided nation.
Only by openly discussing anything can we ever hope to find common ground or understanding. Differences of opinions and different ways of speaking are what make this site interesting. There are some of the lefty loons that I’d like to be rid of too, but DD I don’t think you should play into the hands of the leftist people who tried to run folks off by ghosting their accounts.
Last time I checked, this was the public square started by the old P/P, and actually leaned a bit to the right. Now it seems folks on the left have a preponderance, but that too will balance itself out naturally, maybe reach an equilibrium — if you don’t allow them to destroy free speech and make this into an echo chamber.
The Great Man. Houston. 630 CST. 100,000 rsvp for 18,000 spaces! Wow!!
As a sign of respect for The Greay Man, I think we need a self imposed break for the next hour and a half do we can all enjoy his speech in Houston. No posting until he’s finished!
Out of respect and admiration it’s nice to see Trump and Ted Cruz kissing and making up! No more Lyin’ Ted is Beautiful Texas Ted!
What in the world is Beto running around talking about a $10 a barrel oil tax!! Does he expect Texans to vote for Pelosi?
Beto gets an F from the NRA!! In Texas! For crying out loud does the poor guy expect to win?
Maybe the mob can crash the borders and flood the polls! That will help!
Sorry NoWay !!
Unreal! The best ever rally!!!! I hope Sally and my buds heard this one!!!
You betcha I did! This man has done outstanding things in less than two years, more jobs, more money in everyone’s pockets, economy humming, fewer folks on welfare, etc. of life better overall for all Americans. It’s impossible to reach perfection, but great is danged good! I cannot understand why haters don’t give it up and be glad for all the good things happening.
That was inspirational! Vote for jobs not mobs. Vote for independence not dependence. Makes a tear come to your eye..
100,000+ and a giant tailgating party. Impressive.
Are the liberals on this blog wanting all of these folks in the caravan to storm our southern border?
Yeah, DTM, I’ve got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach about the trouble brewing at our border. The news today was that the column of 10 across was 3 miles long and over 7,000, plus a new mobile mob of 2,000+ had formed in Mexico and is on the way too. Now this evening reports from inside Mexico say the original moving mob has grown even larger: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/oct/22/caravan-grows-14000-people-report/
There are 10 US consulates inside Mexico and are closer, easier to get to than the border. Honest, legitimate refugees would go to those and apply for asylum. But according to international law, asylum claims are not legitimate unless made in the first country they come to after leaving theirs. So Hondurans should have claimed in Guatemala, and Guatemalans in Mexico. Officer Art del Cuerto, Border Patrol Union President, stated today “These are not immigrants. They are invaders.”
Very helpful post. It is an invasion.
What it is more resembles a perfect storm for a classic fascist fear mongering pitch at the perfect time. Mostly women and children being demonized so that you guys will tremble in your boots and clutch your pearls. Whether this relatively small amount of people deciding to do this was organic or not it is a godsend to President Trump. Syria’s civil war has created 5 million refugees to date. This is a molehill transformed into Everest for political gain.
From Garry Kasparov:
That’s good. I will be repeating that!
Yes, they are armed to the teeth with pleas for food and safety. What do you think they’re gonna do? Bum rush the border? Please, y’all are super scaredy cats.
There will undoubtedly be a number who try to sneak in, but they will easily be stopped. But 99% of the folks will just want to fill out asylum applications.
I would say Trump’s a builder– so instead of a wall- divert most every penny of foreign aid we give to Honduras and El Salvador and Guatemala (and Mexico?) for a minute, in order to build a large new public housing City in southern or central Mexico. Like a lot of public housing units. With lower-level retail of course.
Then dedicate aid to help Mexico build its economy.
It’s almost compassionate.
Maybe even Carrier or Harley Davidson could get cheap labor there.
That sick feeling is the result of thoughts that were planted in your brain that you then chose to neurologically swallow instead of spit out. Your emotions are being manipulated. I sense great fear in you.
BTB, I’m not a pudding head, my friend. Nobody plants thoughts in my brain or manipulates me. If you knew me better, you’d know what an understatement that is. I do research as part of my profession, never put forth info without knowing whereof I speak. But thanks for your concern.
How can you simultaneously support independence, yet repeat prepared talking points like a puppet at the same time?
Independence starts at home–in your own brain.
I don’t see any in yours.
“Lyin’ Ted” is gratefully accepting campaign help from the man he once called a “pathological liar” and a “sniveling coward.”
.
Embrace a dirtbag when none of your colleagues can stand you..
Wash your foul mouth out with soap! Something bad must have happened to you for you to be so bitter and hateful. Bless your heart.
