I know it’s not a funny situation, but that bomb containment truck was driving around NYC the whole time I had the TV on this morning, like 45 minutes. And that’s with the roads cleared.
1. Where the heck was it going?
2. Who drives that truck? Is it a volunteer? Or do they pick the guy with the lowest seniority?

Is/was LexisNexis being (at least partly) compensated by “sales of electronic copies of the OCGA”?
Is that going to end now since you can download it for free?
Will the legislature find some other way to compensate LexisNexis so they can continue their ‘official’ status?
I’m not sure the functionality of the PRO groups archive is as good as LexisNexis, and it’s dependent on donations anyway, so it could go away. I hope the legislature continues an official access point to the code, as it’s only right that we citizens should be able to see it without shelling out hundreds of dollars every year.
I used to use the LexisNexis code that was linked to legis.ga.gov. ( I think it’s also available through Galileo). Never once did I ever see an annotation. Maybe a note about a syntax correction from the Revision Committee, but memory may not serve well, because I stopped using it. I now use justia.com, because the interface is more user-friendly, and it doesn’t time you out or anything like Lexis did. (https://law.justia.com/codes/georgia/). Maybe now justia will get free annotations if not already? What a stupid lawsuit, which was probably prompted by LexisNexis’ pleas or threats, or a stupid contract clause. Wouldn’t surprise me to learn that the legislature doesn’t know how to use case law to write legal standards into contracts.
As a follow-up, I just did a quick check , nd the CEO of Justia not only used to run FindLaw, but is member of Board of Trustees of Public.Resource.Org, the same place that the legislature sued.

Thanks. Very nice. I rank Bloomberg and Reuters high, AP a tad below because their style is drier. I’m aware of built-in biases when I read WaPo, NYT, WSJ, and CSM, and Politico and The Hill but they’re all serious about getting the facts straight. A friend recommended Jacobin; they have good analysis but they’re working for a socialist revolution. American Conservative is a good counter for monarchists. I’m surprised they rank The Standard so high and gratified they put The Federalist so low as I think they’re both trash. The Economist is particularly good if your mindset runs towards empire. The Guardian and BBC have the best Brexit coverage I’ve seen from general news sites. I don’t watch TV news unless there’s an election or blizzard or mass killing.
If he didn’t want a connection to be made between “Nationalism” and its prominent current usage by racists, he shouldn’t have used the word. It’s fair analysis to say he’s using it with knowledge, and not ignorance. And if it was ignorance, that says something too.
You should stop ignoring it or denying it or deflecting from it. He used the word. It has bad implications.
Own up to the possibilities, even if you disagree with the conclusions.

This president has made multiple choices that were meant to divide this nation when he had alternate options available to him that would have been more unifying. Examples: nominating someone less controversial than Kavanaugh (though just as conservative) as a gesture to women and to avoid politicizing the Supreme Court, condemning nazis so that people of color in this country could plausibly believe he cares about all people, etc…)
This is the f-you presidency. The “enemy of the people” presidency. The child traumatizing, baby snatching presidency. The win at all costs presidency. He’s the leader of your party and the country, and his tone matters. And it, and he, are abhorrent. The Republican Party is the party in power, so constantly projecting its lack of integrity onto Democrats is weak. I would like to know from every Republican leader what they intend to do to change the tone in this country. What will they do to return to civility, bipartisanship, and democratic norms? I don’t want to hear how the other party is the enemy and it’s their fault. No adult does.

I agree generally with the Forbes article about Social Security not adding to the federal deficit. As established, it is basically a long-term annuity insurance program administered by the federal government, with a reserve fund for payments. Premiums paid during our working years, and annuity payments based on the amount you paid in, to begin at retirement. It is an age-tested plan and was never meant to pay out to anyone younger than 62. Over the decades, Washington has slid in payments from the S/S reserve fund to all ages, even from birth onward, for anyone who can get a doctor to certify them as “disabled”. I believe they also pay lifetime benefits to surviving military spouses and children to 18 or 21 (not sure which). Those belong in government agencies, not the S/S reserve fund.
When McConnell or anyone else speaks about reforming S/S, it is my understanding they mean to move those programs to the departments where they rightfully belong – DH&HS and Veterans Dept. Get them out of the S/S annuity program.
There are any number of actual “entitlements” beyond Medicare and Medicaid. An entitlement is any federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. WIC, food stamps, housing subsidies, welfare payments, schools, lunch programs, state and local government programs of all sorts, etc. etc. etc. Reforming all the different entitlements that are currently stuffed in the budget every year is a massive undertaking, but one that definitely needs to be updated and done.
It’s a large undertaking. As McConnell is quoted as saying, both Dems and Repubs should sign an oath not to play politics with it, and to cut out unnecessary hubris that has grown over the many, many years.
Thanks for your thoughts and comments. But Social Security does not add to the deficit. That is one of Ryan and McConnell et al recurring lies. There are formulas in place to reduce benefits if the fund is reduced. Just my personal opinion here, but programs like these – Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, funded by payroll deductions and taxes should not be cut in light of massive revenue giveaways done by tax reform. Pay off the National Debt with revenue and stop creating massive deficits due to revenue giveaways instead of destroying a small stability benefit for millions of Americans.
I agree with you that S/S does not add to the deficit, didn’t mean to give an impression otherwise. In fact there should be a very healthy S/S reserve fund, due to all the payday deductions made by hundreds of millions of people over the years since inception. Payments have come out of that pot for annuitizing retirees and their spouses over the years, but there has also been a buildup of money never drawn out due to premature deaths. Like any other insurance product, it perpetually replenishes its reserves and there should be no talk of “Social Security running out of money.”
My point was that over the years, the feds have wrongly dipped into that reserve fund for other programs, instead of funding them via the appropriate departmental budgets. Basically stealing money out of our futures. So that definitely does need to be “reformed” as the pols like to say. Put those programs where they belong, and leave S/S to thrive on its on. Do you remember Al Gore’s plan to “put it in a lock box”? He was very right.

I did not like her. At all. That being said, she was an incredible ratings-getter at Fox, even outpaced O’Reilly for a while. She fell out of favor quickly after her insulting performance at the first debate and never recovered. NBC , for whatever reason, chose to sign her. Good for her monetarily, bad for them… very bad. Will, I share your frustration at perpetually whiny and resentful posters, especially those who can’t be bothered to back up their beliefs (it wouldn’t be honest to call them opinions) with fact or argument. Despite the board’s high-minded rhetoric about ‘fair discussion’ and the benefits of ‘informed, honest, and vigorous debate’, it’s clear that no one in charge really gives a shit about what’s written here. The ‘changes’ of the last couple of weeks about permissible posting style conveniently came at the same time as layout changes, not because anything on the board had built to a head. Despite the ‘changes’, lots of posts could be plucked from six months ago and stuck in today’s thread and no one could tell the difference.
My own belief is that’s because board honchos realize they eat at the same table as many posters whose goal is to offend and inflame, so those posters are given greater leeway here than the honchos would put up with in real life. I’ve even entertained the idea that some of the regular posters are front-page contributors with too much time on their hands. Does that make me a conspiracist? Probably.

I recommend Costco pharmacy, membership not required. Wholesale price plus $3 for their prescriptions. I used it without a membership but I saw the chocolates and cheese they had for sale and after a while got a membership. As far as I can tell, she lives here, but her husband primarily lives in TN. (Not ideal but no more unusual than Handel living in DC for years.) She moved there for a few months in 2016 but then moved right back. The cars are in hubby’s name. They’ve owned the house here for like 10 years.
What am I missing?

Living in Georgia full time requires you to change your DL, which would also require a change of your voter registration. – This is state law.

I re-read the article and I see where she has probably made some mistakes. In any case, these aren’t death penalty crimes. Presumably she can pay the money back.
I started to write a bit about how many people’s living arrangements changed during the downturn and many probably didn’t inform the county that their primary residence had changed for a while. But in the end, if she did this she needs to own it and fix it.
I’ve got issues with any long time Georgia resident homeowner that doesn’t know that more than one homestead exemption per family is illegal. McBath is dead in the water..
The only significant issue I see (or don’t understand) is that she claimed the exemption on the Douglas county property for two years. Why was she living there when they still had the Marietta house?
I can imagine a scenario where Curtis spends most of his work time in TN, but considers the Marietta house his home. He comes home most weekends, for example, but it is more convenient for him to get his car tags in TN. She apparently moved up there for a few months for some reason but then moved right back. All that seems plausible to me.
It’s hard to figure out what might have gone on with the Douglas Co property. But this was in 2009 and 2010, in the midst of the recession, and I know a lot of people had different living arrangements at that time, whether because their home got foreclosed on, or they had less income, or any number of other reasons. But they should not have been claiming two exemptions and need to get that paid back.
Beyond the issue of two homestead exemptions for those two years, McBath has said her husband has been a permanent resident of TN since 2002 which makes the homestead exemption a more recent thing since she voted in TN in 2016.

To The Libs: DTM has been here, by my count, roughly six months. Most of his posts deal with economics. He lays out various stats and simply asks how The Libs hope to concoct a winning formula by supporting Big Government Dems. I think around day five after 2016 I suggested that The Dems look at the result and maybe try and craft a message that re-targeted their recently lost base. I even agreed that the worst possible Repub that could have been nominated beat the worst possible Dem that could have been nominated. I advocated that maybe a different candidate in the next Prez election might give The Dems a better shot.
Bottom line: DTM and I aren’t the haters on this blog. We don’t go crying to The Moderators butt-whining for censorship. We don’t ghost others’ handles for the sole purpose of posting hateful things. All of this hand-wringing from The Libs here is truly embarrassing.

I saw that and it made me laugh. First of all the GOP is basically saying that Kavanaugh is very damaged goods and he is not helping them during the mid terms and as a desperate play to motivate Republicans. I seem to recall Swetnick being asked to be questioned by the FBI regarding Kavanaugh and the GOP declining to let her be interviewed.
