Morning Reads – Wednesday, November 21, 2018 – The Day Before
Morning all. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been cooking for the last three days.
Dry brining is the new wet brining.

Keeping parents involved is part of school these days.
It’s coming.
What elections are still open? Here is the list.
Have a good Thanksgiving everyone. What’s on your menu?

Sweetened cornbread, the best stuffing is cooked in the bird. Don’t eat the salad tomorrow. http://vscnews.com/ffva-urges-fda-to-find-source-of-romaine-lettuce-outbreak-swiftly/ . Or the turkey https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2018/11/state-federal-officials-begin-posting-retailer-lists-for-recalled-turkey/
You’ve chef in your nom de plume, so I’ll take your words for it. Our household already made the decision to go with Honey-baked ham tomorrow.
Sounds good… I’ll be over at 3PM.
Oh No! Not sweetened cornbread! This is the South — sugar does not go into cornbread. Besides, it’s enough carbs already. 🙂
The Republicans are going to name the new Court of Appeals building on the site of the former white ice cube building for Governor Deal. That’s apt, since Deal will have well-stocked the building with his cronies.
Yeah, because his criminal justice reform hasn’t been praised by both sides of the aisle in this state and on a national level for actually trying and doing something for those processed through the courts. While it’s not perfect, it has been a great 8 years of moving the ball forward.
Your comments are slipping more and more into the trolling level. How about sticking with policies instead of your dislike for anything POTUS and “R”?
Duly noted. I’ll adjust accordingly.
POTUS just today began a tweet with “Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have “Obama judges,” and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country.”
The Georgia Supreme Court was expanded from seven to nine judges when Deal signed HB927, sponsored by Deal’s floor leader, Christian Coomer, the Court of Appeals having been expanded from 12 to 15 seats a year earlier. Not so long after HB927 Coomer is appointed to the Court of Appeals, notable (to me at least) in that as far as I can tell Coomer does not have any bench experience.
Perhaps some of the legal eagles that visit here will shed light on whether an appointment to a state’s appeals and second highest court without any bench experience is extraordinary or not.
I maintain my objection to naming any government structure after anyone who is still topside.
Conservative nonprofit with obscure roots and undisclosed funders paid Matthew Whitaker $1.2 million: “In the three years after he arrived in Washington in 2014, Matthew G. Whitaker received more than $1.2 million as the leader of a charity that reported having no other employees, some of the best pay of his career.”
Of course he’s qualified to serve as AG. The swamp needs stocking, and he’s a partisan hack extraordinaire.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/conservative-nonprofit-with-obscure-roots-and-undisclosed-funders-paid-matthew-whitaker-dollar12-million/ar-BBPVxnZ?ocid=spartanntp
Wow, based upon the research reported in the article, there are a lot of things wrong with the nonprofit(s) he was connected to. Some possibly serious violations of IRS law and regs. I expect this will be part of House Dem investigations. And it will look swampy.
Man o man. I’m pretty cynical, but I still am shocked by the amount of money floating around to pay guys like Whitaker, and Manafort and Gates, and Cohen…
I hope we find out who funded this group. Any bets on whether there are Russian connections?
“Excessive” compensation is a legal problem, although many of those rulings are made on an ad hoc basis. I’m sure folks have heard the stories of some CEO of a nonprofit getting paid massive amounts, while only a relatively small % go to the nonprofit’s programs. What is or isn’t excessive depends on market salaries, industry standards, credentials, etc. Whitaker’s salary at least dances on that line if it doesn’t cross it.
As for finding out the original funding sources, good luck. This year, c4s were let off the hook of even letting the IRS know their donors. So any disclosure would be voluntary or made upon audit.
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/rp-18-38.pdf
c3’s are required to report and disclose major donors, but Whitaker’s nonprofit is apparently trying to avail itself of c4 non-disclosure rules. But when I read through the article, it’s as if the nonprofit is a 527 pretending to be a c4 pretending to be a c3.
So, in the words of the immortal Marty Huggins- you better get your broom, because it’s a mess.
This is bizarre:
White House approves use of force, some law enforcement roles for border troops
“The new “cabinet order” was signed by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, not President Donald Trump.”
https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/11/21/white-house-approves-use-of-force-some-law-enforcement-roles-for-border-troops/
What the heck is a “cabinet order”? Does the WH CoS have any authority like this? Is Kelly testing his ability to write a cabinet order invoking Article 25? 🙂
Cooking for guy who tells me he likes me even though I’m not a Trump lover (and his family) this year at his house. 17 adults, 9 teenagers, and a toddler. I’s his turn between him and his 4 siblings. Also first time without his late mother doing the heavy lifting for him. So he asked if I would help him out. Rules are if I cook stuff I do it my way (not Southern – I would screw some of it up). He agreed and warned the family. He started to worry after hauling in my cooking gear, 3 slow cookers, & Instapot Friday night into his house. A Sibling lives 3 blocks away, and is going do the heating of the pre-mades I dropped off this morning (mainly the casseroles) and we will make the teen drivers move it all. My mom had the sibling over night me a box of WI provisions yesterday. Got here at 10 this morning.

And whatever they think they need to bring that I am not planning to make.
I hope you’ve arranged for a neighbor to come by over the weekend to check that the 17 adults, 9 teenagers, and a toddler are still mobile after that feast.
That’s not in my list of responsibly. The 5 siblings are in charge of all logistics outside of major cooking. They have been doing holiday scheduling between them for almost 25 years. When I stopped to empty out my cooler at the sibling this morning they loaded up my trunk with chairs and Chinette boxes when they found out I was dropping off the deserts (minus the cherry pie, the frozen container of Door County cherries sitting in my office thawing – arrived in the over night from WI) at guys house, and I made him unload it.
Last Christmas I cooked for 19 on Christmas Eve (moms side) and 23 on Christmas day (late father’s side). 2 hams, a wild peasant, and a stuffed goose and different sides for each day. 6 deserts (3 each day). I when through a 30 lb sack of potatoes for German potatoes salad, scalloped potatoes & mashed. And 7 huge Tupperware containers of Slush (3 brandy, 2 vodka, and 2 bourbon) https://www.foxvalleyfoodie.com/wisconsin-brandy-slush/ By 8:00 Christmas night I had 1/2 container of Bourbon left)
It should be noted this is like an all day affair with this crowd. eole start bring stuff and setting up around 10:00. Snacking starts @ 11:00 I was told.. Eating is between Detroit and Dallas game. Of the total 30ish items on this list, 14 of these are either made or delivered, Just need to warm or layout. Some one else is making 3 of them. I’m making 4 tonight and prepping the relish trays (I was challenged that the south pickles things better then the north… piff). The only thing I can’t prep to be ready for or make ahead is the cauliflower.

Stacey Abrams has a talent for grandstanding. It went unquestioned in this last election. Apparently, this talent for self promotion was evident in the operations of the New Georgia Project in 2014.
I am so glad that Stacey Abrams was not elected.
A sampling from today’s snark: Why is it that when the CDC says to throw out your romaine lettuce everyone takes it as gospel, but when the same agency tells you vaccinations save lives they’re the Illuminati?
We have no business backing any religious strife anywhere, much less taking sides in the centuries long battle between Sunni and Shia. Yet we have. Repeatedly. On top of this the Wahhabi sect of the Sunnis that dominates Saudi Arabia is responsible for many many more human rights violations and generations of extremists than either Shiites or mainstream Sunnis.
So near the midterm elections we sanction Iran once again and baffle our allies for nebulous violations while the Saudis act with impunity on Shiites with our blessing and our munitions. Why? Follow the money and/or oil. Today President Donald Trump doubled down on yesterday’s defense of the Saudis by thanking them in preventing oil prices from spiking.
Rare Chief Roberts comment….
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/chief-justice-roberts-rebukes-trumps-obama-judge-complaint
Grassley responded -shazam!
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2018/11/grassley-defends-trump-i-dont-recall-chief-roberts-attacking-obama-when-he-rebuked-alito-during-a-sotu/
Google says… Grassy recall might be a wee bit faulty…
First he did not rebuked Alita, he questioned the whole court’s ruling and asked for congress to address the issue with a new law.
“With all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign corporations – to spend without limit in our elections… I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and I’d urge Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps correct some of these problems,”
President Obama, 2010 SOTU
Then Roberts address the issue in a Q & A at Un. of Alabama.
http://www.nbcnews.com/id/35790685/ns/politics/t/chief-justice-state-union-scene-troubling/#.W_dST_ZFx9A
No shazam…
Exactly. Grassley can’t remember it because it never even needed to happen. If Obama had called Alito a partisan hack, we might have needed a response.
I’m looking forward to a real mind-blowing moment when Kav is a deciding vote against a Trump policy, in order to you know, uphold a valid law or something. Kav will be the newest “loyalist” to be thrown under the bus.
Gwinnett recount for the 7th Congressional District is over and Woodall (R) will return to Congress by a margin of 433 votes:

7th District: Bourdeaux concedes following recounts
Fivethirtyeight had already forecast this one for Woodall but still estimates the House elections will result in a D +39 swing; the largest midterm swing in the House since Watergate.
