Morning Reads – December 5, 2018
Well, it is the day after again… The R’s pull out a victory with low turnout. Guess that SoS and PSC don’t have the same draw as Governor… results here.
President George Herbert Walker Bush’s service at the National Cathedral will begin at 10AM today. You can watch it here.
On Saturday, your Atlanta United will play some team of left coast treehuggers for the MLS Cup.
Looks like the loser in the other Georgia is taking some hints from Abrams.
Someone doesn’t want Serkis screwing up and Animal Farm, and I agree with him.
Some cool stuff filming in Georgia right now, and some commentary on the #boycottgeorgia crap.
Why doesn’t anyone ever give me a chainsaw as a gift? Oh yeah… Bob if you are reading this, sorry about your car.

Production trailers for Limited Partners had taken over the pay lot at the corner of Turner (Spring) and John Portman for about a week and a half, but they cleared out over the weekend. This time last year, “Venom” was filming in the same area…in/around America’s Mart and American Cancer Society Center.
Lady and the Tramp (Goodnight Stranger) was camped out by my office for 6 weeks this fall.
So Kemp’s got a brand new chainsaw. What could go wrong? Is this why Bookman is leaving?
The idea that the ruling party of the other Georgia ‘had enjoyed an “undue advantage” and increased misuse of administrative resources “further blurred the line between party and state”’ is preposterous. You might see that subversion of process in the Georgia of the Marvel universe but nowhere else.
Nope, not voter suppression. Voter suppression is about keeping people from voting or trying to vote.
This is election fraud, manipulating ballots that were cast or attempted to be cast.
Even collecting absentee ballots is a felony.
NCGL § 163A-1298(a)(5)
It may be semantics, but if stealing ballots isn’t “keeping people from voting” I don’t know what is.
So it could be both.
The unusual 100,000 undervote in the Lt. Gov election is yet to be investigated. The undervote was most pronounced in a few metro Atlanta counties. the undervote was voting machine-related since there was no unusual undervote amongst paper absentee ballots. Nothing necessarily nefarious in that, but investigation and a report are in order.
The acting SoS doesn’t think a 100,000 undervote isn’t worth investigating since it would not have affected results. We’ll see what happens when the newly elected SoS takes office.
Since the incoming SoS’s comments on election integrity pretty much amount to “keeping Mexicans from voting” I doubt that investigation would be a high priority for him.
Now, having ballots printed with an image of Jesus on them might be near the top of the list.
To be fair, the new SoS first has to follow up on the Democrat’s “failed attempt to hack the state’s voter registration system.” Since Kemp never offered evidence of his charges, this process may take some time.
Imagine what the reaction would be if that depiction looked like my avatar instead of the ubiquitous blue-eyed strawberry blonde.
i know i’m an anecdote, not a statistic, but i didn’t vote in the lt guv race…duncan rubbed me the wrong way, and i might could have been convinced to vote for amico until she said her race was important in case kemp gets #metoo’d…so i skipped it and only it…also i don’t know when it becomes a statistically significant difference but there was almost a 100k difference between jason carter and connie stokes in 2014 vote difference in 2014, only a 30k vote difference in 2010…and then i quit looking…interestingly, cagle outpolled deal in both those races also…there was a dem at the top of the ballot that brought new voters, very excited to vote for her…who maybe didn’t really care about the lt guv race that was much much more low key…
the raw vote difference was about 40k in 2014…
drjay, you’re noting drop offs from the race above. The issue is total votes for the office and the difference between the Lt Gov and other down ballot statewide races. Here are the numbers
Office 2018 2014 2010 (total ballots cast in thousands below)
Gov 3,939 2,550 2,576
Lt Gov 3,780 2,529 2,567
SoS 3,884 2,528 2,553
AG 3,862 2,524 2,551
Agri 3,843 2,509 2,546
Ins 3,861 2,520 2,545
Sch 3,843 2,524 2,552
Labor 3,861 2,507 2,535
Examine the general fallout in votes in the 2014 and 2010 elections, and then look at 2018. Total votes cast in the Lt Gov should have been 3,880 or higher, hence the 100,00 undervote.
Something clearly wrong. The 100,00 votes wouldn’t have made a difference, but it’s stupid to not investigate what may have happened.
Informative article on Animal Farm.
I am unable to agree with Orwell’s political and economic policy.
What do you think of his fighting Spanish Fascists?
I admire his conviction and lament his supporting one extremely flawed economic concept in battling another. I am sure he thought he was doing what he thought was right considering his disdain for the British class system and lack of upward mobility in that society. I wonder if he had actually been able to experience our society by living here would he have seen things differently. We have our flaws and certainly had them in his era but his brand of socialism is a soul destroyer.
If funerals can be inspirational events, well, this one was. Hope y’all watched. If not, YouTube is ready.
Funerals are always sad and inspiring. They tell us a lot about the personal history and the character, and the good in the ones being remembered. It tells us what they value and what they did or did not do. They create unintentional lens for looking at what and why this person lived the way they did – which naturally leads to comparing to our own actions or someone else’s. In the end they lead you to wanting to live to their standard or the be better then them.
We don’t forget the person had flaws. We don’t forget they made mistakes. We don’t over look what their failures were. Instead for one last time we can see what they meant to the people who loved them. What they meant to friends, coworkers, and even their advisories.
Funerals are both sad and inspirational. They remind us of what we lost, and allow us to cherish that lost for the recalling of memories; the mix blessings of pain and joy. they give us. They force us to revaluate not only what we known but what we did not know.
How is your Christmas season going, Sis? What are you getting your bro for Christmas?
He needed a new pair… These are for working outside in negative temps.

This should be interesting:
Luxembourg to become first country to make all public transport free
Fares on trains, trams and buses will be lifted next summer under the plans of the re-elected coalition government led by Xavier Bettel, who was sworn in for a second term as prime minister on Wednesday.

Probably fake news.
Migrants don’t bring disease. In fact, they help fight it, report says
“There is no evidence to show that migrants are spreading disease,” said Dr. Paul Spiegel, who directs the Center for Humanitarian Health at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. “That is a false argument that is used to keep migrants out,” Spiegel told NBC News.

So it makes me wonder: What is the problem with immigration? If it’s not disease…
– They take our jobs.
As if there is a limit to the number of jobs we can create? Is it a jobs per square mile limit? What if we annexed 1/3 of Mexico? Could we create a lot more jobs then? How about 1/3 of Canada? Why can’t we just create more jobs in Montana?
Not many would argue about needing to control the border. The question is what is the best way. But theoretically, if Mexico and the US and Canada were effectively one economic entity (kinda like the EU), what’s the big deal? Wouldn’t that be a good thing?
The Hawks have the 4th highest total of 3 point shots attempted, but they are 29th (out of 30) in percentage made.
They might need to re-think their game planning.

I’m looking at starting a go fund me account to bring in Sister Jean to bless Atlanta sports teams and break the curse on all things Atl before Saturday’s MLS finals. This entire region is cursed we’ve just failed to name it.
