Morning Reads for Thursday, January 10, 2019
Good Morning, friends! Jessica is out of the office today, so I am filling in.
- Georgians are starting to feel the effects of the shutdown.
- The shutdown is also disrupting the flow of Georgia Beer.
- R Kelly is under investigation in Georgia after a television series debuted describing his abuse of women, specifically minors.
- Delta will fly out of Hilton Head with flights to Atlanta and LaGuardia beginning in May and June, respectively.
- Remember the homeless veteran that was accused of a GoFundMe scam? He skipped his court date.
- This guy tried to claim his roommate’s TEN MILLION DOLLAR winning lottery ticket.
- Speaking on $10 million dollars, that’s what these kidnappers want for the wife of one of Norway’s multimillionaires.
- Ok, this sounds really dumb, but I think I could get the free cookie. An Atlanta restaurant is having a “Bird Box” dinner later this month. If you correctly identify the tacos and margaritas that you are consuming blindfolded, then you get a free cookie.
- Traveling by air during the shutdown? You’re safe, but expect delays.
- The Oscars will have no host for the first time in 30 years.
- Astronomers have found a light that is as old as the universe, giving them a peek at the beginning of time.
- Ok, there are some other weird things happening in space, including mysterious radio signals. There are several reasons they could be happening. They include a neutron star with a very strong magnetic field that is spinning very rapidly, two neutron stars merging together, and, among a minority of observers, some form of alien spaceship. I’m going with alien spaceship.

I guess the government shutdown affected the alien spaceship link. Or maybe it was ETs up to no good. They’re not from around here you know.

I will go with neutron stars Alex! Do send this to AL Gore. We could have another ginned up panic due to naturally occuring celestial events.
Can CNN bend the story and claim its Trump’s fault for denying aliens exist? The only solution must be taxes increases on the wealthy and electing radical socialists. Sound familiar?!
I know what sounds familiar.
Oh I am calm. Just making another observation about liberal panic, lies and idiocy. We saw it on display with the deer in a headlight response from Chuck and Nancy!
I will encourage you to calm down yourself little buddy so you can get back to your screaming about racists and Nazis…..Well I be darned, I see you are back doing that again! Glad you are back to your old self.
But its fine when 90% of your posts are accusations of racism and Nazi baloney, correct? Living proof is another one today! Can you go one day without anything with racist and Nazi in it? Its tiresome.
You guys are the clowns that politicizes climate change. I figured you may as well do that for the neutron stars. Its Trump’s fault.
The left politicizes every aspect of everyday life and its appalling. Take a knew for a change and a breather. Who is it fomenting hate daily? Not me. Did you see the midterms?
How about Kavanaugh hearings?….Maybe the Chuckie and Pelosi joke of hypocrisy the other night. Oh, there is no problem. Trump is making it up. We already have them on tape saying the same damn thing Trump is saying. So one way or another we know they are LYING.
So if we could get the LIBERAL PINK HAT WEARING HATE FILLED nimrods like you to stifle for a change, wouldn’t we all be better off? Tell that to your biased buddies in the main stream media too.
“Not every item in the news needs to have politics injected into it…” I wish.
Be the change you wish for,
Final meeting of the SAFE Commission deciding on our voting method is today at 9AM. Here is info in case you want to go or contact someone:

Hand marked ballots that are read by a scanner are the best option. A limited number of (more expensive) machine-marked ballots for those who need them would be OK too but under no circumstances should any ballot be read by a barcode. This defeats the purpose of a paper ballot as a voter cannot interpret a barcode to verify that their intent.
Any by the way, here is the list of vendors bidding for the contract:
Clear Ballot
Dominion Voting
Election Systems & Software
Hart InterCivic
Robis Elections
Smartmatic USA
Unisyn Voting Solutions
And one more relevant name: Charles ‘Chuck’ Harper (not the famed blogger Charlie Harper). This Charles Harper is Gov. Brian Kemp’s new Chief of Staff. His former gig? Lobbyist for Election Systems & Software.
Hmmm.
Kemp is a Trumper. And it’s Trump policy that lobbyists are eminently qualified and deserving of regulating and recommending. MAGA.
We’ve been regaled with what Nathan Deal has done for the state. Fair and balanced is reviewing what the state will now be doing for Nathan Deal.
What better time to call in favors and begin lobbying than as soon as possible after serving as Governor and packing state government with friends and cronies? Don’t worry, he’ll only be “consulting” for the first year.

Think someone like PSC member Tricia Pridemore, AG Chris Carr, or Court of Appeals Judge Christian Coomer aren’t going to take his call for a chit-chat “consultation”?
Deal’s only been out of office for days, but that’s all the time it took to land a $120,000 a year Regents Professor post, having appointed all of the Board.of Regents, among them his business partner. I mean something has to fill the gap now that his daughter is no longer collecting a very healthy cut of his campaign donations, at least until Deal can lobby full force.
https://www.ajc.com/news/local-education/deal-college-lecture-plans-praised-but-120-000-salary-panned/87fFLi8qy5qRaSyJ3FHA0H/
$120,000 is full time pay, but does anyone think it will be for full time work?
Trumpers talk a big game about the swamp and public trough, but it’s not a swamp or trough if when someone is taking only the cut that they’ve earned.
I did not vote for Deal but I did think he did a good job as Governor. The stench from this arrangement overshadows everything he’s done.
This is another example of the people who make the rules make bad behavior legal and then claim they followed the law. I’m sure nothing will be done about this but the next time I hear Kasim Reed is a crook or about all the corruption at the airport I’ll add this one to my list along with Plant Vogel.
Those with the gold rule make the rules and they make them to benefit themselves and to the detriment of everyone not exactly like them.
There is a one year restriction on lobbying after you leave state office- unless you remain employed in state gov’t. The law is below for reference. So, Deal can be a “consultant” or lobbyist, but if he is paid to influence gov’t, he needs to register as a lobbyist. And disclose that interest to anyone he calls.
I’m not as concerned at this as you guys are, though. The reason that there is an exception for state employment is because then his primary income won’t be from special interests/private entities, and he would presumably maintain the state’s interests. But it wouldn’t hurt if potential conflicts of interest were vetted better.
O.C.G.A. § 21-5-75
(a) Except as provided in subsection (b) of this Code section, on and after January 8, 2007, persons identified in subparagraphs (A) through (D) of paragraph (22) of Code Section 21-5-3 and the executive director of each state board, commission, or authority shall be prohibited from registering as a lobbyist or engaging in lobbying under this article for a period of one year after terminating such employment or leaving such office.
(b) The lobbying prohibition contained in subsection (a) of this Code section shall not apply to persons who terminate such employment or leave such office but who remain employed in state government.
I’ve been generally complimentary of Deal as a Republican Governor except on ethics and cronysim. It’s cheesy as had been the case since Deal ran for Governor so to me there’s no shadow.
Kasim Reed has lost the trust required to ever again hold any executive elective or appointed office. Had Hillary won and Reed received an appointment, we would have heard about Reed instead of Price.
An afterthought is that Deal and Reed may have gotten along so well because of what they shared in common.
I’d previously expressed concern to my General Assembly representation about Airport oversight, but Deal’s actions this last have reversed and sealed my opinion that the state shouldn’t be in charge.
No Jessica! But I have a great “Jessica might like link” for her.

Well, Kemp’s voting machine commission did exactly what one would expect a corrupt system to do: They recommended the most expensive solution, that also happens to be a system offered by Kemp’s deputy Chief of Staff.
Nothing to see here. Keep moving.

I just wanted to clarify this for the record: The system they recommended is offered by the company Kemp’s Deputy Chief of Staff previously lobbied for.
I’m old enough to remember when the GOP was for private land owners rights, religious freedoms, protecting places of worship and not messing with Texas.
