Morning Reads – Wednesday, January 23, 2019
So, the comment section is starting to get a little rough again… I’d hate to have to ban a few of you while Session is going on, and through the 2020 election.
- I mean, the AJC seems to have a bit of obsession if this is what they are reporting.
- Bartow County’s freshmen legislators are looking at roads, workforce development, and the opioid crisis.
- Candidates for the other Georgia’s Supreme Court ask the Parliment not to consider them.
- Investment company shedding Equifax stock.
- Clarke County BOE releases legislative agenda and schedules a town hall for January 31st.
- 2019 Agricultural Forcast for Georgia.

Glad to see the inland port idea is still moving forward with real proactive traffic solutions.
A few other tidbits.
Hope for old guys (like me!)

Good read. I hadn’t been checking CSM lately but I think I need to put them back on my reading list.

Glad to see Chick-fil-A stick by their principles. It would be funny if the Trumpster bought the Covington kids Chick-fil-A when they come the visit the Whitehouse.
Regarding the qualities of recent comments, I’m reminded of a comment I heard from an Atlanta homicide detective years ago. They had a suspect in custody who wouldn’t shut up. Most apprehended criminals follow the lawyerly advice of STFU; not this guy, to the point of being really irritating. Finally, one of the cops looked at him straight on and said: “You have the right to remain silent. And I would appreciate it if you did so.”
Wow, wouldn’t be interesting if that Covington video turns out to have been edited and promoted by Russian agitators?
The @2020fight account was a frequent poster before its suspension, averaging 130 tweets per day since it was opened in late 2016, according to CNN. Molly McKew, an information warfare researcher, told CNN the account’s video was amplified by a network of bot accounts.
https://www.thewrap.com/twitter-suspends-account-covington-students/
No collusion. And if there was it’s not illegal.
This was up maybe yesterday? It’s one of the reasons why small incidents get blown up, and why the hate is amplified. It’s been part of the strategy of foreign powers from Day 1. Make us our own worst enemy, and maybe they can get the gov’t to be crippled (or even shut down) through political civil war. Wait, are we losing?
Dave, that is what the Mueller report will say. Thanks for finally getting that out.
Benev, do you think Hillary and the FBI paid for the video like they did for the fake Dossier? Wonder if those 25 fired FBI agents were involved.
‘A little rough’ is a pretty funny characterization of the chronic sneering and irrelevancy on display here. What’s even funnier is the disconnect between the daily juvenile posturing by the usual offenders, and the stated board promise to encourage ‘an informed, honest, and vigorous debate’ and to protect against ‘vitriol and randomness’. From where I sit, vitriol and randomness are winning, and it’s not close at all.
From the Gainesville inland port story, the intent to dump dredge or fill materials, probably into the North Oconee River, is especially concerning since my neighbors and I get a lot of our water from the Oconee. Why not treat waste as waste and haul it away? Imagine the wailing if the plan were to dump the fill into Lake Lanier.
I also think they’ll need more than a small building to house the staff necessary to run and secure acres of storage and miles of tracks and roadways. Probably should consider staffing requirements first and then build to fit.
Don’t forget the usual assortment of old tires and bodies. Thank God for Brita filters. LOL
283 acres is a lot more land than required by the facility. An off the cuff guess is that facility will occupy on the order of 60 acres or less. That waste will be hauled away when there’s plenty of land at the site leads me to believe most of the site is environmentally sensitive. Land for future expansion if the facility is successful is desirable. On the other hand state ownership of the extra acreage may be a nice perk for Hall County.
I estimate the facility will employ on the order of two dozen people. Not much of a building is required, since on the order of only a half-dozen will work within it, others checking in and out, it being used for breaks and occasional meetings. For context, CSXT’s Fairburn Intermodal Yard, it’s largest volume intermodal yard in the southeast, on Goggle Earth appears to have a 10,000 sq ft building.
By law you have a ratio of on site water retention to paved area to prevent runoff. Unless they do underground retention, pervious pavement, or some type of water remediation to a offsite location, retention ponds are the normal course of action. They take up a lot of space.
Stormwater detention pond(s) wouldn’t require much land. I’m not a hydrologic-hydraulic engineer, but I’d suggest design would require detention of a foot or less of water. Even if the entire facility was impervious—my 60 acre estimate includes some buffer, a 5 foot deep 10 acre pond would suffice. Surround it with a 40 feet wide berm/buffer and that pond would be 13 acres total.
Why don’t we focus on cleaning up the water? In Athens and elsewhere? Its simple technology. Wouldn’t that be a better platform and return on investment than spending trillions on fighting “climate change”?
In 12 years we are told we will all be dead if we don’t fight climate change…Well why bother doing a damn thing with that attitude right?
How many lives are improved around the globe with nothing more than clean water and decent sewage treatment? But it is boring. Wont buy votes… right?
Who thinks cleaning up the air and water makes more sense than knee capping our economy with massive taxes that will not accomplish much at all especially when China and India are the biggest polluters.
If we are told this is our World War II by some on the left, should we invade China and India to save the planet? Could we shame them by thinking up a term like Nazi and Racist to call them and get them to comply?
What is in the core of the democratic party platform? Trillions for climate change. $1 for Wall Security..
To bad Trump ended or reduced the major regulations to businesses, farmers and most construction and chemical locations that once had mandatory erosion control in place to stop messing up the water AND clean up the messes they already made..
“Pollution levels in the Oconee River have nothing to do with climate change…” Thanks you. Neither does anything else. Anywhere. Short term or long term. Or ever, actually. Glad that has been settled.
Your quick effort to dismiss any reference to Senorita Cortez is humorous! If she were my party’s new bright, shiny toy, I would too. Her statements have to be embarrassing to you.
DTM’s comment about her is simply highlighting her stupidity. And don’t fret for me or my bride. People in Bogota call me “The Gringo” all the time. It’s funny! And people call Mrs. Noway “senorita” all the time here in Georgia. It’s an endearment. It acknowledges her South American heritage as well as implies youth, which always gets a drawn out “gracias” from her!!
Thank you Andrew.
I agree lets not waste trillions on climate change with almost zero impact per the folks even proposing the massive carbon taxes. Clean up the Oconee. Chattahoochee and all of them. Maybe the Flint MI politicians will do their job too.
Tell your democratic buddies that will be waiving that futile climate change flag in the next election while politicizing the damn environment for a few votes, a climate that no one can control. I prefer Americans to save their trillions on something with some investment return and common sense while not destroying the economy. Then maybe we can stifle the 12 years we’re doomed lunacy.
Something like Natural gas works because its cheaper, cleaner and we all win. We have a ton of due to technology that is a world game changer. Who is against that by the way? How does that make any common sense?
Lower costs for solar panels each year is awesome. So are any other great ideas. It should be an economic issue not a partisan political issue. Like I am better than you because I have a Smart Car…sound familiar?
I bet we both would agree agree spending a billion or two on reforestation around the world (I would think all countries would participate because the can see the results as the trees grow yearly and eventually reforest themselves naturally and it aint much money!!
That would do more for reducing carbon than a devastating carbon tax that does nothing but give politicians more money to blow and almost total control over our lives and killing the economy along the way.
Case in point, look at the idiots in France today. How do those yellow vests love that $8 gas? Have the riots stopped yet? And what are the citizens getting in return? …Just the government shaft. That is the radical environmental folks at work.
Fair enough? Common sense we can all agree on. No name calling. Results. No one ostracizes the other side and turns themselves into a fire breathing band of raging bigots of hate against the other half of Americans they disagree with. Like have seen on full display over the last few years. Right? Sound good to you? Not close down the government, take your bat and go home.
DTM… The first paragraph was good… then you fell off the rails. I’m not sure if it’s too much coffee, or not enough. Please step back, think, and keep your emotions from getting the best of you.
The US House passed a bill, 357-22, supporting NATO. All 22 nays are ‘R’s’, two of whom are Rick Allen and Jody Hice.

Re: shutdown, I think it’s time for Dems to make a counter, even though Trump just lost a semblance of one of the few bargaining chips he had:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/supreme-court-takes-no-action-on-daca-leaving-policy-in-place-for-now/
I think a good counter would be something like $3.6B for a smart tech fence, with all the humanitarian relief and judges, and go ahead and make DACA permanent, plus TPS, etc. I think that’s reasonable and most people would see it that way.
But such a counter may need to wait until after the scheduled Thursday Senate votes.
As I mentioned before, they should also float a bill that gives the WH a full $5.2B or even $5.7B, for whatever, in exchange for Mueller and Mueller report protection, including some delegation or waiver of executive privilege (although that could be technically very difficult to figure out). Just so the WH’s most deeply held priorities are transparent to the people.
Those are reasonable offers. DACA amnesty in exchange for any wall money is non-negotiable.
I never understood the “amnesty” argument. First, you can’t punish one individual for the crimes of another. Plus, the Dreamers themselves- as children- could not have committed any crime because you need an intent to commit a crime. So, the Dreamers get no amnesty? Their parents? If they’re still alive, make a special procedure in immigration court where there is a special ability to review any old claims of asylum, and special punishments, such that the worst is that someone has to apply for entry and their app will be approved if they can prove no crime, paid taxes, or extenuating family or medical circumstances or such. If there needs to be punishment to satisfy the vindictive Ann Coulters of the world, set a one to two month timeline for hearings for which they can be under house arrest with work-release or something. Not too hard to find something if people put their minds to it.
Amnesty for DACA (and similarly situated people) is just a word—don’t take my use of it to mean it’s traditional meaning. Avoiding it means means Republicans won’t know what you’re talking about, like using VAT instead of Fair Tax, or fiscal conservatism (which in Republican-speak is lowering taxes and complaining about spending they don’t want).
I agree with the idea of ending the shutdown first. But I think the counter has to be made for folks to stay with the Dems’ efforts to end it. When the counters are rejected, they will continue to blame Trump. On the improbability that such an offer were accepted, you just accept for the sake of the hostages.
Well, to my understanding, the Senate will vote on basically that counter tmrrw. That may mean you wait for Trump’s next counter. But if the Dems make the right move to show willingness to negotiate, they can lock in some of the current disapproval rates.
Trump’s counter also ends Asylum for children from Central American. Any GOP senator in the 2020 election cycle in a Dem leaning state will be damned if they vote for it and damned by federal employees and federal contract workers if the don’t.
If R’s want border money in the budget, why don’t they write a bill and submit it for a vote? Did they offer amendments to the recently passed House bills?
That is how the process works. If your bill gets voted down, you go back and try to convince more people your way for the next time.
And constantly lying about it is not helpful. A wall will have little to no effect on rapes in Mexico, or drug traffic, or US crime. If you have to lie to make your point, you may not have a good point.
I am confident Dems would be willing to talk about increasing funding for the whole process at the border, but not supporting a stupidly made campaign promise. And where would the money come from anyway?
Define “little to no effect.” Would a ten percent drop in drugs, rapes and crimes be a good thing for the US? Two percent? Five?
So, let’s see, I wanna get this right,
Ok, here we go…you’re saying the other 10% of heroin, the other 12% of coke, the other 13% of meth and the other 20% of fent that get over the Southern Border may come at not legal border ports of entry. Would it not be a good idea to try and tamp down on that additional flow through the construction of a wall? Should the levels of horrific, personal destruction caused by those additional percentages of drugs getting into our country not be aggressively addressed? Or are a certain number of American children’s lives an acceptable loss?
OK, now your little crime stat. It’s sooooo cute!! But not relevant to anything other than to highlight that people who are here in this country illegally are committing crimes (rapes and crime). If they were back home in their countries of birth, the crimes you readily admit they DO commit, would not be being committed HERE in our country. Against our citizens. Or are those victims just an acceptable loss, too? Just damn bad luck, huh?
Once again, Andrew, ask the family of Kate Steinle.
You ain’t making a real convincing in either example…
He was here illegally. He would not, could not have “accidentally” killed her, hoss.
Andrew, why do you think of every reason to do nothing? Why don’t you become part of the solution.
Noway we are told doing nothing is great. That is what we have been told for 30 years now by both lying parties. Someone is willing to address it. Actually fight for it. But is vilified. Isnt the same person address China’s cheating ways? And no one has done jack s—t about it. Oh, but it is bad and its hateful.
Like I said, if one or both sides are full of crap, I am glad to point it out. Both sides have been lying and doing too little about this issue for 30 years and kicked the can down the road. Fix the damn system. Sitting on your a– doing nothing is not an option.
The art geek in me made me post this…

Holy cow, that’s just bad…
Unsure if paywall. Bot for me anyway and i do not subscribe. This is what I was saying yesterday in the ultimate kerffuffle…
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-high-school-deplorables-11548202058
Great article. We got this story yesterday on this blog didn’t we?
This is how one party and the press have turned bigotry into action against half of the country. Bigotry of thought. Sick. Its on purpose. For political gain. On MLK day too.
If you don’t believe it. Go wear a red MAGA hat. Congratulations. I thought MLK wanted no bigotry and to judge people by the content of their character.
What do you think MLK would think of identity politics, the core platform of the democratic party today?
“Its on purpose. For political gain.”
Or in other words, Republicans campaigning and governing principle.
Identity politics? A MAGA hat identifies victimhood politics.
Dave, do conservatives attack folks for wearing a Hillary hat? Or an Obama one?
Liberals screaming racist and Nazi every day and before every election cycle has finally finally worked. Congratulations. Having good race relations is detrimental to the liberal voting buying complex. It has fine tuned bigotry against half of the country. Just by way they think.
It is not a new phenomenon.
I hate to tell you this, but I have had my tires slashed 2 times around presidential elections in my own driveway.
There must have been hundreds of Clinton signs in the neighborhoods. I put out a Bush sign for the hell of it. With no megaphone. Big mistake. It happened the next election too. I started looking for nails in front and behind my tires before I drove away in the mornings. I have had bricks thrown in my car windows. This was 15 and 20 years ago.
Now it is to the point you cant wear a red golf hat without fear. How is that possible? The haters in the media and your party has succeeded in doing that. Congratulations.
Do you disagree that this has not happened? Just listen to Pelosi tell you how to weaponize lies with her buddies in the press. The Liberal Lap Smear. Gleefully perfected and described in her own words. It is very easy to recognize now.
That happened yesterday to those kids didn’t it?
A reasonable post. Personal story of vandalism visited upon DTM. Nothing inflammatory about it. I’m curious as to the responses you’ll get.
I’m truly sorry about your tires. I’d call the cops if I’d witnessed it.
“Hypotheticals” as Rudy would call ’em,, from the mouth of your dirtbag cult leader.
“I’d like to punch him in the face'”
“Any guy that can do a body slam — he’s my kind of guy,”
“I’ll beat the crap out of you.”
“Part of the problem … is nobody wants to hurt each other anymore.”
“The audience hit back. That’s what we need a little bit more of.”
“Try not to hurt him. If you do, I’ll defend you in court, don’t worry about it.”
“Knock the crap out of them.”
“I don’t know if I’ll do the fighting myself or if other people will.”
“Maybe he should have been roughed up.”
“In the good old days this doesn’t happen because they used to treat them very, very rough.”
Yeah, MAGA like the good old days.
Andrew. Nice deflection. Go wear a MAGA red hat in almost any town in America and see how long it takes for some radical to physically or verbally assault you. Not just Charlottesville. That is what screaming racist and Nazi will go every day and having folks in the press happy to convey that message.
Do you disagree? Is that not a hideous form of bigotry? And the best liberal get out the vote ploy?
Hey, in the words of Curly Howard, I resemble that remark, ACP. But the hats I wear most everywhere are rarely ball caps.
MLK was right. What happened to today’s democratic party. Bigotry is at the core.
Wow, what a great editorial cartoon! In today’s AJC. We had the WSJ nailed yesterday.
Can you imagine anyone being able to turn a red hat into the latest “white pointy hood of racism”? That is almost like magic or something. Didn’t the Klan, founded by the democratic party mind you, have 150 years to perfect their racist symbol?
But todays democrats and their buddies in the media —with their total focus on hate and bigotry— have turned a red hat into a racist symbol in world record time!!
Do you think they should get a Nobel Prize for Hate the Gold Medal of Bigotry for their amazing PR campaign?
Obama got a Nobel Peace prize in his first week on the job for doing nothing. Right? What does Trump get in the fair and balanced land of liberals? Millions of Vagina hats and a full bore hate campaign. See how that works?
Do you think MLK would be proud of judging someone by the color of their hat and not give a rat’s a– about the content of their character?
http://www.michaelpramirez.com/index.html
With their recent success of hate, what do think will be next symbol of bigotry will be?
I have a good idea. I bet it will the Catholic School uniform… Can you think of anything more vile and a sign of white privilege? Many of the kids look like Kavanaugh at an early age. They may not support abortion, the leading cause of death in America today. They must be Bible thumping rubes and embrace religion. Most schools are pretty expensive to you can always exploit the income inequality that has become so vogue in the socialist/communist game bag….
What do you guys think will be the next symbol or hate, bigotry and/or white privilege.
Too bad the Swastika is already taken. The same folks have screamed racist and Nazi so long that the Red Hat will have to do.
In all seriousness, I joked about going to a Halloween Party at the “club” with my posse. I couldn’t wear a white hood or a red MAGA hat. That was before that White Privileged Catholic Schoolboy hateful CHUD became the latest burning cross for our bigoted buddies. Is it possible the liberals will be at least civil when dealing with folks they disagree with? A set of tires gets expensive to replace.
Does anyone ever wonder why we say “give a damn” to express apathy or interest? https://chamblee54.wordpress.com/2019/01/23/give-a-damn/
Love the pics. Bernie loves him some other people’s dams.
This is too good. https://theintercept.com/2019/01/20/beyond-buzzfeed-the-10-worst-most-embarrassing-u-s-media-failures-on-the-trumprussia-story/
Anybody see the Lt. Gov. piece in the AJC on school choice? Preach on sir. I should be able to get a voucher for some of my property taxes for the school my daughter goes to. The next obstacle would allow it to go to out of State as all the good private schools in our area are in Chattanooga.
I should be able to get a voucher too for not having any children in any school. And a voucher for any and all federal, state, and local child related tax credits, child related deductions, write-offs, and family discounts people with children get and I don’t.
If you were blessed by God to have a child when folks like myself were born with a pre-existing condition preventing them from having a child, and you can be further blessed to have something to complain about like school taxes, vouchers and being ‘over taxed’, be grateful, not whiney.
Excellent op-ed on the Covington incident:
https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-edit-lincoln-memorial-20190122-story.html?fbclid=IwAR3egAIkGkokLSLLtT3uZxBHyQ7EfVSbloPORE_Hu_2v_Fz_E2mCBcXd2V0&fbclid=IwAR1MBM9UlwtBdYOdRkpcbmadngsvGush2L_Hwl5bIplaspWtZqhTNME4slQ
Great article about our biased liberal media still trying to trap a kid that did nothing . They try to make him look bad when he is the stinking victim.
It is almost a sickening as asking someone “have you stooped beating your wife?!
Again, is this a “fair” interview or is she trying to trap the kid? She is over and over try to blame him for goodness sake. The media learned nothing from their lie fest yesterday.
Why didn’t this fraud apologize for what the media did to the kids, the families and the schools? And what they are doing to this country. The media is corrupt. Did you catch the statement that he looked like Kavanaugh. Well hells bells, lets Bork him too.
Why doesn’t Savannah interview the racist radical group the Hebrew Israelites?! You know the answer. She is scared to plus it is NOT part of the narrative folks. Somehow this kid is the face of white privilege right? Sick.
Anyone want to see the Twitter list of off the chain hate from MAJOR DEMOCRATIC SUPPORTERS busting this kid’s a–?
Fair and balanced. There is your media. Are any liberals outraged at this? This makes me sick as you might guess.
You know what is pitiful? NOT ONE LIBERAL said the media is wrong here.
Where will State of Union be given? I’m saying at a rally type setting. Not at Capitol.
Well, Trump said it’s a go. Unsure where, though.
Can’t be in the House chamber. Maybe Mitch will let him in the well of the Senate. Speaker’s House, Speaker says who can come and go onto the floor beyond a member of Congress in her House.
So, you’re saying she will not let Trump deliver it in the House Tuesday?
“She also controls the audio and video feeds from the floor of the House…” Wow! The burdens of power, huh?
If he requests to give it from The Oval, they will. They’d have to. It’s news. If they don’t it’s an open admission of their anti-Trump bias.
I won’t even say it…
Do it from the Oval office. Tell folks all of the great things going on in this country. Why do we need the democrats there anyway? They have done ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING to help since he was elected. Why should they get any credit?
Actually America can see how much little the democrats have to do with anything positive in this country. They wont even open the door and turn on the lights. Never been done in the history of the country.
I hope folks are watching this. I hope they are watching the press. I hope they watching the gigantic case of bigotry the radical left is imposing on this country. It aint right.
See also controls whether congress can even have a joint session of Congress. Also controls what public events can occur in the rotunda, like a a ‘Lying in State’, what is served in the cafeteria and even when the caital olice. If the speaker says the President is not allowed in the building next Tuesday, the Sergeant of Arms, will make it so.
And TGM will not go where he is not wanted. No worries Baby Sis. How does Texas stadium sound? I won’t say it…
He couldn’t file a 10,000 seat Texas stadium for a Cruz rally. and is base has slipped 3% since then. Technically he has to give the State of the Union to congress. The written version to congress will be out before he starts talking.
It will be a PR problem for him. He’s going to tell folks how he is going to planning out his 2020 budget while federal workers are in lines to be feed and the FBI is running out of resources like DNA kits, to process crime scenes.
Also not an a.n. item.
So Ellyn if Pelosi cared, the FBI can have all of the DNA kits they want and we get some border protection. The same border protection that she wanted, the Clintons Obama and Trump all talked about right? Am I to believe its all Trump’s fault?
Could it be he is the only one person willing to fight and do something about the immigration fiasco? So do you follow the liberal party line that we have no problem at all. 700,000 illegals per year is no problem? Even though that is down from over a million per year a few years ago.
Would anyone like to bet Trump wouldn’t have standing room only in Texas if he did that? I will take that bet.
What ever happened to the Hillary Clinton listening tour that was only $50 bucks a ticket!? What on earth could those 2 say that we don’t already know about. Now I would go if she would tell us where the emails were and how she ,the FBI and Justice Department worked together to destroy Trump. And if Bill fessed up about all of his girlfriends!
I do think that tour is history now after one event in Canada that they could not sell out. Is that right?
Would anyone on this blog go see her other than me if I could get the answer to those questions?
I wanted to offer a plug to the Spelman Museum of Fine Art. There is a show coming up starting Jan. 31 featuring the work of Amy Sherald, who did that amazing portrait of Michelle Obama that is in the National Portrait gallery.
Go see the show!
https://www.spelman.edu/about-us/news-and-events/news-releases/2018/12/18/amy-sheralds-newest-portraits-on-view-at-the-spelman-college-museum-of-fine-art
Runs to 18 May.
Does anyone on here know anything about the buying of gold bullion American Eagles? One ounce. Price seems yo good to be true.
