RE: Winlink. It sure looks like a cheap way to grab radio spectrum. If everyone could read the message traffic, it’s one thing. But private messages? Nope. That’s cell phones, 4G and all that.
I tend to agree. There are other avenues by which to send sensitive messages over encrypted channels–amateur radio isn’t one of those channels.
I bought a shortwave receiver back in the 90’s and spent some time scanning the airwaves. I remember on certain frequencies there would be several stations broadcasting Morse code. And quite a few stations on other frequencies that had some weird broadcasts (discussions about aliens on earth, black helicopters, etc}
I imagine the internet and smartphones have decreased that traffic on the SW bands.
Morse code (CW) is the most efficient use of bandwidth. There are also digital modes like radioteletype (RTTY) and phase-shift keying (PSK). Digital modes are fun, but they are transmitted in plain text.
I think the internet in general has more to do with the reduction of shortwave broadcasting than anything else. There is no shortage on space aliens, black helicopters, and conspiracy theories on the web and it is cheaper than renting time on a 50,000 watt shortwave station. I was at my station console tuning around one night and heard a special shortwave broadcast from Radio Havana Cuba in the early 80’s that the US had just invaded Cuba and we were at war. I had a good laugh about that one.
You will still hear lots of CW transmitted. Many thought when the CW test and requirement was eliminated from the amateur radio test CW would die and no one would use it. That has not been the case. It seems just as or more popular than ever. I understand some of the services are teaching it again. Army and Navy I think..
I haven’t watched Stranger Things but the idea of a cricket stadium where Gwinnett Place sits is strange enough.
Why does it seem strange? Lots of people play Cricket. Even my blue color, farming, industrial rust bowl hometown has a public Cricket field in one of the parks. Savannah has some sort of league that is played on weekends.
Blame my ignorance. I’ve seen cricket played in DC but nowhere else. I’ve never heard anyone complain about a lack of local cricket facilities. But if it’s the next big thing, and a 20K stadium off Pleasant Hill would say it is, then OK.
Seems it is a blood sport between India and Pakistan but that area is more Korean & Vietnamese. Anyway it appears to be a waste of a lot of indoor space to me that could still be utilized for something. Something the Gwinnett Commission probably should have considered before they allowed Scott Hudgens to undermine his own mall area with another one. A year-round amusement park? A casino? 👿
I just learned Ross Perot died today. He was an Annapolis grad, a terrific salesman who made himself a billionaire, a former Presidential candidate, honest, hard-working, smart as hell, a little nutty. I always thought he was a man born in the wrong century.

The original outsourcing guy. A little nutty sounds refreshing at this point.
if stranger things fans really start making pilgrimages to starcourt mall after reading stories like that they are going to be gravely disappointed and possibly get mugged or worse…
