Morning Reads for Thursday September 5, 2019
On this day the Brits took Singapore without opposition, Tokyo Rose was arrested in Yokohama, ZEEP – Canada’s first nuclear reactor went critical and Igor Gouzenko defected with 109 documents detailing Soviet espionage in the West. More importantly Kathryn Louise Gent was born in Baltimore, MD and she went on to attempt to keep one IrishPat in line for almost 52 years now. Happy Birthday to my bride.

Reuters has an investigative story on a Savannah jail.
“Death And Politics In A Georgia Jail”:
“Both companies were politically connected in Savannah. CorrectHealth, and its president’s wife, had donated $5,000 to the election campaign of Chatham County Sheriff John Wilcher. CorrectHealth also had hired a state senator to run the jail’s dental clinic. And pharmacy operator Quick Rx was owned by a powerful member of the Georgia House of Representatives.”

And Trump’s weather map fiasco about Dorian hitting Alabama is drawing laughs all over the world.
He produces a cartoonish tracking map where someone used a sharpie to extend the tracking into Alabama Then he produces a second map which also appears to have been altered. He’s an embarrassment

(Look at the replies where he is totally discredited)
You beat me to the punch on the sharpie map. Trump’s high profile causes Reuters and other international sources(your comment above) to investigate American democracy. My is to the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49587232. Yes, Trump is really that dumb. And all the world knows it.
In other of yesterday’s news:
Trump told reporters the Dow stock index would be “10,000 points higher” if he hadn’t started a tariff war with China. Trump 2020 campaign motto: I could have inflicted more damage, but I didn’t.
More are calling it quits. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), the second-most senior member of the entire House, announced that he would not be running in 2020. Sensenbrenner in 2011 said that First Lady Michelle Obama “lectures us on eating right while she has a large posterior herself”, just in case it be forgotten that the normalization of gratuitous personal insults by senior GOP leaders preceded Trump and his naming of it, MAGA. Likewise Bill Flores (R-TX) announced he won’t run in 2020, becoming the fifth Texas Republican to call it quits. It’s being called a Texodus.
Last week Joe Balash was the assistant secretary of the interior in charge of land and minerals. This week he’s an executive at a foreign oil company that is planning to drill on land adjacent to Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
No worries, he’ll abide by Trump administration ethics with respect to lobbying. It’s what Republicans call draining the swamp. https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2019/09/04/top-interior-official-who-pushed-expand-drilling-alaska-join-oil-company-there/
And….he’s never heard of a category 5 hurricane. NEVER! No one has.
This would be comical but he’s playing president on a reality TV show and we’re his captive audience, at least until next year.
“Analysis: Conservatives Criticize Trump, but Softly, in Code”
https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2019/09/03/us/politics/ap-us-trump-conservative-code-analysis.html
“In a fight between crassness and discretion in the new millennium, crassness will win every time.”
“It took a long time for congressional leaders for the Republican Party to see the damage [of McCarthy and Nixon] to their party and step in.”
“Republicans will not do it while they think there are still gains to be made through the Trump presidency.”
If the nanny state is asking us (or just reminding us) to do something simple and without cost, and using well-documented evidence, with the clear goal of trying to save the lives of our neighbors who may not otherwise remember or do what they can do to help themselves… then give me some Mary Poppins.
I’m not so Darwinian to say that people should just die instead of benefitting from the education and data of the state – even if that education arrives in the form of mandates. If only there was a program where you had no choice but to eat vegetables 😉
