Morning Reads for Tuesday, September 10
Good morning! Yesterday US News ranked Agnes Scott College as the nation’s most innovative liberal arts college, and having the best experience for first-year students. And kudos to Spelman for being the top HBCU in the country (womens colleges FTW), and to Morehouse, Tech, Emory, Georgia State, UGA, and Mercer for their recognitions and for being *almost* as awesome as Agnes Scott & Spelman.
- Fantastic news out of Brunswick yesterday!
- Here’s how SPLOST is working for Columbus.
- Vaping is not safe, and a spate of recent respiratory illnesses – and deaths – continues to make the case that, no, vaping is not a safer alternative to smoking, and yes, it needs more federal regulations.
- Kemp launched a “strike team” to assist economic development efforts in rural Georgia.
- The “Tampon Tax” will be back in the 2020 session.
- I moved to Decatur only a decade after this street name change and I had no idea that the street was ever anything other than Commerce Drive. Here’s the real history of Oliver Street.
- Why doesn’t the Atlanta Dream have a bigger fan base?
- The awful reality of what happened in Millen, Georgia, in 1919.

I’m sure that L word turns off some parents. Just where does one go for conservative arts?
Looks like we survived Bolton without bombing anyone. By this administration’s standards this is a major accomplishment.
The revolving door of high level officials and cabinet members is staggering. Trump is going to run out of the “best” people to hire and he’ll have to resort to hiring lackeys, relatives and crooks.
or “CHAIN IMMIGRATE” in more family.
Bolton should’ve shaved the mustache. Trump didn’t like it.
Bolton knew he was on shaky ground when the stache knocked him out of the running for SoS pre-inauguration: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-secretary-of-state-reject-john-bolton-moustache-transition-president-elect-cabinet-a7489576.html
“Presentation is very important because you’re representing America not only on the national stage but also the international stage, depending on the position,” said Trump spokesman Jason Miller.
“President Donald Trump’s job approval rating fell several points in a new survey, while Americans’ fears of a looming recession have escalated and their confidence in Trump’s handling of the economy has sagged.”

It appears the Obama economic wave Trump inherited is cresting. Trump isn’t delivering the 4% GDP growth or eliminating the national debt in eight years. GDP is growing little more than during the Obama Presidency though Trump is “priming the pump” (Trump invented that phrase you know) with trillion dollar deficits.
Oh Look! Corruption in Puerto Rico by… the regional FEMA deputy in charge…?

Bishop bested McCready 50.8 – 48.6 in today’s NC-9 special election. Trump campaigning for Bishop the night before may be what carried the day for Bishop.
The results bring to mind GA-6, an open seat that Handel won in a 2017 special 51.9 – 48.1. But then lost 50.5 – 49.5 in the 2018 general.
On one hand Trump will be on the ballot in 2020, which wasn’t the case for Handel in 2018. On the other, Trump won’t be campaigning in NC-9 on the eve of the 2020 general.
There were 22% more votes cast in 2018 in GA-6 contest than in the 2017 special.
There were 49% more votes cast in 2018 in NC-9 contest than in the 2019 special.
The background is there for NC-9, a GOP seat since 1963, to be a toss up again in 2020.
