Lunchtime Reads for Tuesday, April 28
Good morning! I hope it’s going well.
- A compelling case in the Financial Times (so, a real news source) explaining why the death toll may be far greater than the current tally suggests.
- More troubling news for poultry processors.
- If you’re looking for something to read, here are some suggestions.
- Why Rep. Kasey Carpenter decided to reopen his two Woodstock restaurants. (NB: While I won’t be dining in any restaurants anytime soon – it’s takeout only for now at my house – I would like to state for the record that Kasey is a great guy and a friend and I hope he, his family, and his staff stay healthy, and not just because they make excellent pizza.)
- The Supreme Court affirms that the Georgia Code belongs to Georgians.
- How coastal businesses in Georgia are approaching reopening.
- If you live anywhere in Georgia and have COVID-19 symptoms, there’s a test waiting for you.
- An analysis of the choices we have as business owners, and as consumers.
- The rural/urban education divide in Georgia is increasingly pronounced.
- More cleaning products at home apparently means more calls to Georgia’s poison control center.
- Delta will manufacture pods to safely transport military personnel infected with the virus.
- A fascinating longer read about how this pandemic will transform the retail sector in the U.S.
- New York’s ballot laws may help a Manhattan doorman ascend to the state Assembly.
- Idle museum curators share the creepiest pieces in their collections.

Soooooooooooooo, do we still “ believe all women”?? LOL! You folks, you know who you are, don’t have to answer that. We KNOW the answer, don’t we?
RIP #metoomovement. Dead at the hands of liberal democrats. Especially females.
I still say ‘believe women’. Come November do we vote for the man with over 35 allegations, 22 credible, including 4 law suites or the man with 3 allegations, 1 credible or no law suites. Neither one is a good choice.
I still believe, and find each allegation disturbing. Thank you, Ellynn, for the summary numbers. Also, to include as part of the weight of the decision, is the dates of the alleged occurrences. One can generally put more ire towards the more recent occurrences, although when you’re fine-tuning ire, it is not the best or ideal choice to weigh. Yet it is still the choice we have.
Too late to edit the above, but not too late to add.
The other thing to consider is that we’re talking about one dimension among a number of important dimensions. And even just focusing on the dimension of character/morality/empathy (other dimensions focused on the the likes of ability to govern, and policy preferences) then the comparison remains stark. The characters of the competing candidates differ almost exclusively, and practiced and experienced empathy is pitted against egoism and transactionalism, etc. The context of the candidates’ character and journey of growth means more than just a little, and again, this makes the choice even more stark,
While some would call them hypocrites, I prefer the term human pretzels.
Has there been even one CREDIBLE allegation of actual RAPE against Trump? But regardless, this is not about Trump. It was not Trump where the “ Believe all women” meme took off. It was, rather, one Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Remember him? You know, the guy the left/ media/dems (obviously I repeat myself) attempted to ruin and deny him his position.
So let me remind you of a few inconvenient facts and comparisons.
Christine Blasey Ford- there was never a scintilla of evidence that she had ever even so much as met or been in the presence of Kavanaugh, much less been subject to attack by him.
Tara Reade-there is no dispute that they knew each other and worked together.
Ford- there are zero contemporaneous witnesses that she ever mention her allegation too. In fact, she did not mention it to anyone fir decades.
Reade- at last report there are at least 5 folks now who confirm she reported the incident to them immediately. Not to mention, Tara’s mother actually called in to Larry King live on freaking CNN to ask for advice about how to proceed.
Ford- had an obvious political and philosophical motive to sink Kavanaugh as she is a lefty dem concerned about abortion and Kavanaugh is a conservative Republican.
Reade- OTOH had zero political motives as she and Biden are both dems.
Also, Kavanaugh had an impeccable reputation with zero inappropriate touching incidents with women before this debacle.
Biden -lol!
Every one of the networks lead their evening shows for weeks with absurd “ breaking news bombshells“ concerning Kavanaugh, yet cannot be bothered to even report apparently credible allegations against the democrat candidate.
And some of you folks actually mock Fox News. smh.
What should have denied Kavanuagh the position was lying under oath before the whole country and the GOP taking up for it. Not admitting he abused alcohol as a teenager, and Devil’s triangle a drinking game? Pfffft. MAGA.
So, it’s not abt Trump, it’s abt Kav?
First of all, Biden is running against Trump.
Second of all, comparing a Senate confirmation process to a general media vetting is like comparing apples and avocados.
Third of all, it’s about the victims, and the process.
On that, first of all, you got some facts wrong, I believe. It is my belief bc it is based on memory- but Ford had given a contemporaneous account. And there was the guy who said he saw them at a party together, and he even said so to the Senate, but it was never investigated. This is why comparing that Senate confirmation process to anything else is riddled with stumbling blocks.
But more to the point, credibility of an allegation and an accuser is based on factors not even involving corroborating witnesses, including sheer emotional authenticity. That’s why juries decide credibility of witnesses up close and personal.
All that said, I believe the allegations, and Reade is getting more and more attention- incl. from allegedly liberal news outlets. So I’m not worried that the allegations are getting vetted, and will continue to get vetted. They should.
But, yes, Kav did have a- euphemistically- problematic high school past, at least. But then you got his denials under oath vs. denials in newspapers…the Senate confirmation process is different in nature. He would have been better off just saying I was young and got blitzed so much I passed out drunk, and God knows, and I’m sorry for any mistakes or pain. I don’t remember him saying that, but maybe he did?
Biden needs to say something similar, like I don’t remember that incident, but I’m sorry if there was ever anything that interfered with my professionalism.
The victims need to be recognized and apologized to, even if we know the accused can never admit fault or guilt. Because if anyone did that, then God knows what the political parties- forget the media- would do to ruin a person deemed as a political threat.
Calling you out for flat out lying. Ford gave ZERO contemporaneous account. ZERO. Oh, and I did not even mention that Ford’s own family reportedly did not even believe her.
Anyone, ANYONE, imo, who believed a word that she said is a special kind of stupid.
The fact you have to make up your own facts says it all. Face it, you and people like you,are a hypocrite. Period.
So, I am neither hypocrite nor liar, but thank you for your lack of reading comprehension and baseless insults. But I’ll turn the other cheek here and try to be helpful, at least as far as an attempt to achieve some sort of understanding.
I stated I have believed all allegations that appear to have come to significant public attention, and will continue to do so. So no hypocrisy. I even base my standards for credibility on the same principles.
As for Blasey-Ford, I stated I was drawing from vague memory- specifically stated that. Because I did not care to relitigate any of it. (Which is odd, bc I see so many who do want to). But I can tell you my determination of her credibility was not based on contemporaneous records.
I did try to explain my view of how credibility can be assessed.
It appears that you just can’t understand how anyone would assess credibility different than you.. Which leads to the inevitable over-generalizations and insults.
But I am stupid- for thinking quarantining would help people to be more thoughtful.
Never wrestle with a pig. You just get dirty and the pig enjoys it.
Especially if said pig exposes your hypocrisy
I finally understand why so many pig slaughterhouses have “pride” in their name. Tennessee’s Pride, Pilgrim;s Pride, Carolina’s Pride…
It’s because of Proverbs 16:18.
The story on education needs in rural Georgia highlights why allowing EMCs to host internet services and dropping pole fees is empty talk, a nod to the ideal of ‘incentivizing’ change, and no more a solution to real problems than saying ‘I wish’. The state talked when they had the money to make a difference, and now they have no money.
I stand by my opinion the broadband internet access should be a public utility.
Related to the urban-rural divide is that a large fraction of the poor than manage to get a good education leave because there’s so little opportunity.
