Morning Reads for Tuesday, December 1
Good morning! I hope that wherever you are in Georgia this morning, you’re toasty. Or, toasted, depending on what time of day you are reading this.
- The list of potential Biden appointees from Georgia includes some names you’re undoubtedly familiar with, and a few you may not know as well. Here’s one rundown.
- A large section of the Golden Ray was pulled out of the water, and – I say this with all seriousness – the photo will blow your mind.
- Smell ya later, Iowa! It’s Georgia’s turn.
- Not only is climate change real – it’s really impacting 16 Superfund sites in Georgia.
- More details on VP Pence’s trip to Savannah where he hopes to persuade people to vote in a race his boss is telling them to not vote in? Or something? (It’s a lot to follow, and I am but a mortal woman.)
- Here’s what to expect in different states as they roll out their COVID-19 vaccine distribution framework.

I am completely baffled by the Republican strategies in the Senate runoffs. Divide and conquer is an ancient strategy but traditionally it means splitting up the opponent’s forces, not your own. I really don’t think that purity tests for loyalty to a dead duck are the way to go. The Guv has previously shown puppy dog loyalty even opening up the state too early in the face of Covid, only to be kicked in the teeth by da man for actually following his Twitty directives. Now he and the SoS are getting heat from the Twitty Pulpit for not throwing the election Putin style…
History is on the side of the Republicans in the runoff due to turn out but in the effort to fire up the Trumpers that are feeling disenfranchised to the point of parading their pickups in front of the SoS’s residence, I wonder how many of those that held their nose and voted for Trump anyway are going to be inspired to return to the polls to vote for two of his avowed disciples.
Here are some incentives for your Democratic friends wanting to move to Georgia to vote in the run off.. https://grow.acorns.com/savannah-georgia-will-pay-people-to-move-there/
I take it that is a jape and I’m taking it too seriously but:
1. The article dates back to June.
2. The grant is offered to people in technology fields only, nothing about party affiliation.
3. It was for only 50 people and likely long since filled.
4. The fearmongering of Democrats moving in just to vote in the runoff is right up there with paedophile Dems hanging out in a non-existent pizzeria basement.
@Chefdavid, Thanks this will come in handy for my cousins moving from Vermont. They prefer Bernie Sanders, but will pitch in to help Biden.
Pence will be at the hanger directly adjacent to the Georgia Air National Guard field. Most likely to brag about the new air wing that is “coming to Georgia” which has not been approved by congress or even funded.
Don’t get me wrong, it would be great IF it happens. The coast got burned in Hinesville by the promised 4th battalion which never come in 2007, and if the GOP holds the Senate, the funding line will be ‘but the national debit’ which is only an issue when the President is not a Republican. Outside of raising taxes, the only thing left to make a major dent in the debt to cut is defense spending… So, I’ll wait until the planes start being houses on the field before I get all excited.
If you were Brian Kemp, would you go meet with Trump when he visits on Saturday?

Scheduling conflict.
But it would be cool to see Kemp and SoS sponsor a “Defend the Vote” counter-rally.
Bill Barr has been Trump’s best buddy for a while, I guess he gets thrown under the bus now. Lots of folks under that bus.
“WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr said Tuesday the Justice Department has not uncovered evidence of widespread voter fraud that would change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
His comments in an interview with The Associated Press come despite President Donald Trump’s repeated baseless claims that the election was stolen, Trump’s effort to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election and his refusal to concede his loss to President-Elect Joe Biden.
Barr said U.S. attorneys and FBI agents have been working to follow up specific complaints and information they’ve received, but they’ve uncovered no evidence that would change the outcome of the election. Barr was headed to the White House later for a previously scheduled meeting.
“To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election,” Barr told the AP.
The comments are especially direct coming from Barr, who has been one of the president’s most ardent allies. Before the election, he had repeatedly raised the notion that mail-in voter fraud could be especially vulnerable to fraud during the coronavirus pandemic as Americans feared going to polls and instead chose to vote by mail.”

Barr gives and Barr takes away.
“Attorney General William Barr appointed Connecticut US Attorney John Durham to act as special counsel investigating whether intelligence and law enforcement violated the law in investigating the 2016 Trump presidential campaign.
The announcement on Tuesday doubles down on one of President Donald Trump’s longtime infatuations — that national security and criminal concerns about his campaign and Russia in 2016 sullied the legitimacy of his election and presidency — and leaves a political bomb ticking for President-elect Joe Biden and his new attorney general.
The appointment virtually ensures Durham keeps his investigation going and allows Republicans to keep some political focus on Trump’s accusations of a “witch hunt” and the former government officials he despises.”
BREAKING from CNN: “The Justice Department is investigating a potential crime related to funneling money to the White House in exchange for a presidential pardon, according to a court record unsealed on Tuesday by the chief judge of the DC District Court.”
Color me surprised!

And another story:
“Georgia election official implores Trump to stop fraud rhetoric, fears ‘someone’s going to get hurt’
Gabriel Sterling, manager for the state’s voting systems, said threats since the election have become so intense that police officers are stationed outside his house.
The Republican official also said the wife of Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has been getting “sexualized threats” on her cellphone, and a young contractor received death threats after viral internet messages falsely claimed he had been caught committing fraud.
Sterling, visibly angry at a brief press conference on Tuesday, directed some of his remarks squarely at fellow-Republican Trump, who continues to make false claims that he won the Nov. 3 election against Democratic President-elect Joe Biden and that the voting was marred by widespread fraud.”

Can we just put Trump in “protective security” and have pence carry on until Jan 20? It would be safer for everyone.
Whether or not this message reaches anyone relevant, I want to continue to thank election administrators from precinct poll workers to county staff to the Secretary’s and Deputy Secretary’s office, etc. for their hard work, attention to getting it right, and integrity.
