Morning Reads for Tuesday, December 22
Good morning! There were clear skies throughout Georgia last night. Did you see the Great Conjunction? Meanwhile…
- Last last night, Congress approved a $900 billion COVID relief bill.
- Congress also approved upgrading the Jimmy Carter Historic Sites in and around Plains, Georgia, to National Park status.
- I’m not entirely sure what a Substack is – it’s like an email news letter, I guess? And you subscribe to it? Hence the “sub?” Anyway, Jamie Dupree has one now, and in this morning’s edition I learned that the state of Virginia removed their statue of Robert E. Lee from the U.S. Capitol yesterday.
- Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted late last night. Here’s video.
- Guy Fieri: all he ever did was follow his dream!

I hope everyone has a good holiday week. Merry Christmas!
The question of the week:
Do you have a weird sneeze?
Yesterday, the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections rejected a gop-backed challenge to almost 8,000 Athens voters’ residency.
A Republican member of the board denied that the challenges were a coordinated, partisan effort. A non-partisan appointee countered this claim, noting the challenge was filed by the chairman of the Athens Republican Party and used lists provided by True the Vote, a pro-Trump group.
True the Vote is preemptively challenging 364,000 “potentially ineligible” voters in all 159 Georgia counties.
The vote to reject the challenge was unanimous. The gop appointee abstained.

This was the same case where the original challenge was to 16, 024 voters, which was the same # used for Cobb challenge? Perhaps they actually sorted out Athens residents?
I tried to figure out how the same # could be used for both counties, and the best guess I have is that if you take the total # of voters challenged in the state (364K), and divide by 159 counties, you get a little over 2289. Then, if you were just doing lazy math, you could approximate based upon a weighted population factor (using a formula and some sorting n Excel, even). For more populous counties, that factor could be 7, and so weighted, the # of voters per such populous counties would be between 16,023 nd 16, 025, depending upon your decimal places. So…perhaps that was the shortcut….
Regardless, glad to see such broad and generalized accusations were rejected. There should be more publicized info about how the SoS has done its job re: address changes.
‘ figure out how the same # could be used for both counties’
From an earlier story: “Rhoden appears to have cut-and-pasted the Cobb County letter. In one instance, his letter refers to Cobb rather than Clarke County. It also references 16,024 voters, which is the number challenged in Cobb County. The file accompanying Rhoden’s letter contains 2,948 names.”
The challenge was later amended to nearly 8000 names.

Unreal.
“As Trump meets with QAnon influencers, the conspiracy theory’s adherents beg for dictatorship
With Trump’s days in office dwindling, QAnon influencers have become increasingly restless and militant, urging the president to “#crosstherubicon.”
(Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon against the wishes of the Roman senate and became dictator. )
