Daily Reads for Tuesday, April 13
- Today’s must-read story: this completely bonkers account of the bonkers shenanigans involving the bonkers high school football program at Valdosta High School. If you read the phrase, “Georgia High School Association,” realize that you’re reading it in the New York Times, then you either involuntarily hold your breath or roll your eyes – enjoy!
- Governor Kemp addressed civic leaders, as well as federal, state, and local lawmakers, at the Cobb Chamber’s annual meeting.
- Here’s how some employers are successfully boosting vaccine access – and confidence – among their Latino employees.
- That bill that would prevent cities and towns from cutting public safety budgets is likely entirely unenforceable (and only good for campaign ads).
- Don’t expect the concept of vaccine verification to go away any time soon.
- The Sons of Confederate Veterans were denied permission to meet at Stone Mountain Park this year.
- The Sierra Club challenged Georgia Power’s plans to charge ratepayers for coal ash cleanup.
- Drivers on I-85 in Troup County tried real hard to not cry over spilled beer.

Football is God in Valdosta. ESPN named it Winnersville USA back when both high schools and the university were doing well at football. The contracts the high school coaches sign stipulate they have to win the state title and win over the rival school.
Valdosta fired the previous coach because he failed to win enough in his three year contract. Propst had a TV show and fit the win-at-all-costs ethos of the board. My opinion of his hiring was he would have a scandal in three years similar to his at Colquitt or in Alabama. There wasn’t anything about it that struck me as he reformed. So, I am more surprised it went public so quickly. But, that might have more to do with his lackluster first season.
The kid from California being so brazenly open about why he was there made him ineligible. Propst being so brazenly open about getting kids like that there didn’t help. But, this kind of thing has been talked about there since the 80s, so it feels more like them cutting their losses when they know he’s done.
By “So, I am more surprised it went public so quickly,” I mean the allegations about paying for players. I would have expected it to be rumor and unofficial for longer.
I blame the Georgia Bar for driving Lin Wood across the Savannah River and depriving us Georgians of quality entertainment.
Yeah, but if he had stayed the 10th would have probably put him in Congress.
This site needs an edit function, among other things.

Yes. There used to be an edit function, and now it’s gone.
Edit is tide spelled backwards.
Unfortunately High School football bonkerism is not unique to Valdosta in Georgia. When recruiting middle schoolers can fetch more salary than a principal, double PhD teacher, or hell even the Superintendent, it’s going to happen and even more. I can’t find recent stats, but Georgia had 44 high school coaches making six figures in the 2017-2018 school year.
