It took less than two hours Thursday for jurors to decide to convict suspended Georgia insurance commissioner Jim Beck on 37 criminal counts relating to more than $2.5 million he embezzled from Georgia Underwriting Association.
Thoughts:
Two hours to convict on 37 counts means he should have plead out.
Beck remains free on bail, which seems wrong.
I bet the old thief stole much more than $2.5M. He should spend the rest of his days in prison.
Beck ran his scam when he was head of Georgia Underwriting Association which provides insurance to high-risk groups like coastal homeowners who can’t get or can’t afford insurance through private firms. GUA is one of those state created quasi-public units that maybe would have benefited from closer financial oversight, you think?

I was on a federal grand jury for a year way back when (not fun, but necessary). Lots of grand juries can be led around by the nose at the county level and my own experience colors my view, but in my opinion 99% of the federally indicted defendants whose name isn’t Gotti should cop a plea.
